  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

GV70 2.5 rear end noise

Our dif finally arrived, with prescheduled install this past Monday--now it's end of day on Thursday and still no car and no loaner available and no return call on status. Hopefully we can get it tomorrow and it will be all good. Bottom line--been dealing with noise since new, with 10 wks for dif order arrival, and a week of installing so far. Keeping hope that it will be done right and no more rear whine.
I got mine installed yesterday. Most everything went well - except the driver who was supposed to return my car to my work place got his wires crossed and he delivered my car to my home address instead - which is in another town! He then had to drive it all the way back and put nearly 100 KM on it in the process. :( They did fill it up with gas though. And they provided me with a G80 loaner for the day, delivered to my workplace.

The noise is gone now and I will know in a few days if it will become a problem again or not. I put a lot of mileage on (about 100 KM/day) so I should know in about 10 days as the last diff started making noise at about 1,000 KM.

Besides the miscommunication, my service has been really good - as advertised when I bought the GV70!

How is it possible you didn’t get a loaner?

So I was able to have my vehicle diagnosed today and it was confirmed to be rear differential. The service was pretty good. Picked up my vehicle and left with a loaner. Kept my vehicle overnight and next day confirmed my observations. They had 2 techs in the vehicle in the road test, one driving and the second listening. Then put it up on hoist to listen with stethoscope like a doctor. Took oil sample and found debris and "burnt oil". Sounds bad to me but they said it's driveable. I'll be notified shortly with an ETA for the part. I'll report back with any updates. I asked the service rep if there had been any others with same issue. There was one other vehicle with same problem. I'm the second.

Update: New dif is now installed on our 2023 GV70. It took 5 1/2 days to get the install finished. We appreciated the Shop Foreman who did the install himself and worked overtime to complete the install, and listened to our concerns. He assured us that new, full fluid was installed & checked and that he drove the car himself with no noise but did say 'no guarantees" it would stop the noise. So far, we have had no noise from the new dif. Yea!!
If you are having the rear end noise, you might want to consider having it confirmed early and request the part be ordered. Ours has been a 5 1/2 month process. They are covered up. Overall, we like the car, but are not convinced it meets "luxury" standards.

No loaners available; gave us a free Lyft ride home when new dif arrived to be installed.

This is against Genesis policy, as far as I know. Sorry they didn’t arrange one for you.

5 1/2 days? They did mine in 2 hours, left me a loaner and had my car back before I finished work.

After 5 weeks, we got ours back on Tuesday. No noise so far...keeping our fingers crossed.

I bought GV70 2.5 advanced on September 30. Started to notice a whining noise from the back of the vehicle after two weeks of buying and at about 500 km. Diagnosed with the rear-differential issue on November 4. They told me that the part is back-ordered and will be available in 30 days. The car was deemed as not safe to drive, and they told me that the warranty likely will be voided for any further damage if I chose to drive. They let me drive the GV70 sport that they left with me as part of the concierge service for 11 days. I am driving now a Chrysler 300 from rental that they are paying for. I am hoping it will arrive end of this month as they told me.

Really? I got mine on Sept 9 and noticed the problem at 1,200 KM. They told me it was fine to drive until the part came in (at about 4,700 KM). I had no issues - it was just a bit annoying. They got the part in within about 5 weeks. No problems since the replacement (now at about 5,200 KM).

Anybody have this issue on a 2023 model? Though I doubt they changed anything for 23.
Having same whine on my 2023 2.5 prestige.

our dealer wouldnt let us drive ours either due to possibly damaging other stuff, so ours sat there for nearly 6 weeks.

mine was said drivable. Looks like quite inconsistent respond from dealers. Wonder what they based it on?

agreed, considering we were driving ours with the sound for a few weeks with no change in it before we took it in.

So I have noticed the “ whistle “ sound. I probably would not really be concerned at all except for the posts here on the forum. I know ( at least in the past ) that some cars had harmonic distortions ( Sounds ) that occured at certain speeds.
Anyway I plan a 2500 mile road trip in mid October .

Does anyone know if there are complete failures of the differential from this issue ?
If it's anything like what I'm experiencing, not only am I annoyed but I cannot figure it out. Started to notice the car making a "whoo" whistle that intensifies with speed but is harmonically pitched so I know it was not wind-related. I don't know if it's worth investigating but for what it's worth. I know a bunch of work was done on the car that was covered by warranty. It's subtle but audible enough to annoy anyone.

It will absolutely get worse over time. I noticed it at 1200 KM and had it replaced at 4700 KM so you should be okay for a trip but I would get it looked at ASAP so they can order the part...that takes a while. 5-6 weeks usually.

There is a bearing issue within the differential. They just replace the whole assembly within a day.

After reading about all these problems I'm glad that I'm not in a hurry to get one. I'm thinking after winter but I need to keep an eye on the differential problem.
