If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Has anyone replaced the battery of their GV70 with something other than the very expensive and difficult-to-acquire O.E.M. factory battery?
Will a H8 AGM fit? I have been led to believe the issue of finding a non-O.E.M. battery relates to the reverse polarity of the O.E.M. battery. True?

12v automotive batteries in the U.S. are made by either Johnson Controls or Interstate regardless of the brand on the battery.

The Interstate site shows that the H7 battery is the one that fits the GV70: MTX-94R/H7 battery | Interstate Batteries

Interstate is the only site I found that lists a battery for the GV70

But, compare the photo, specs and dimensions of the H7 at Walmart: Robot or human? (click "more details" for dimensions).

Might also be available at your Costco (if you're a member): Costco | Interstate Batteries

They're identical because they're made by the same manufacturer. Only the brand label is different.

So, first check that the + and - terminals are oriented the same as the battery in your vehicle and then measure the OEM battery to see that the dimensions are the same as the H7.

All vehicles, since some of the 6V systems that went out in the '50s, use negative ground so the info about "reverse polarity" is incorrect unless someone is confusing that term for the orientation of the terminal posts.

If all the specs for the H7 match your OEM battery, you can either replace it yourself for the lower Costco or Walmart price or I believe most Interstate stores offer installation. (Not sure I'd have installation done by Costco or Walmart).

Let us know if the H7 matches up and best of luck.

Lots of posts for over 2 years on this forum about replacement batteries for a GV70. Just as an FYI, the Group H7 / 94R AGM battery listed on Interstate's website (as well as Costco), does not fit because the post locations are reversed. You'll need a Group 65 AGM, as confirmed in the post attached.

Just so everyone is crystal clear…

I have a 2022 GV70 3.5T, and I had AutoZone deliver the following battery to my home this morning, and I swapped it out myself in 20-30 minutes - No Problem, good as new!

Does it have the same dimensions as factory battery? Nope

Does it have the same specs as the factory battery? Nope

Does it void the Battery Warranty? Who Cares?

Is it available immediately for $250, and does it work flawlessly? 100%

My first beater car in college was a '55 Chrysler with a 6V system. There were a couple times when I had to jump start it from a 12V car and always had to convince the person I was jumping from that I really had to connect the cables opposite from what they'd always been told. The car always started really quickly when that 12V hit the starter motor, though! FWIW, that car also had left-hand threads on the left side wheel lugs.

Great memories…..

2019 G70 Sport 3.3 replacement battery - OEM @ my dealership, in stock $267. After all the searching, this seemed like the best choice - exactly what I already have (including having 800CCA not 750 as mentioned earlier) and guaranteed to work with my car.

Still working great despite being a little less rating than the OEM?
I need to replace ours. Thx!

You are correct that most US off the shelf batteries have the terminals in the opposite sides that the GVs are looking for. You can downsize to the Group 65 as some do, but in very cold climates or if you leave the car parked for extended periods, you will want an AGM trickle charger on it. This is because the OEM battery has higher CCA and reserved capacity, and the "always on" electronics used in the connected services, etc., are a constant drain. I have not checked but one user mentioned somewhere in the manual it says do not open and close the rear hatch more than 3 times without starting the car! If you live in a moderate climate (ie not Fla and not Minn), the AGM65 should be ok. Temperature extremes could be a problem though. If you want the full spec OEM battery, there is a way to do it but it requires some modifications under the rear hatch floor where the battery is located. I posted this the other day on another thread:

FYI--The Genesis OEM battery (for the GV-xx models) manufacturer is Sebang Global Battery, a Korean company that sells in many countries (including the USA) under the product name Rocket Batteries. They offer a retail version with the exact Genesis power specs (Rocket 49AGMX) for less than $150, HOWEVER it is NOT an "R" spec battery, ie, like most others in this Group Size 49, the terminal locations are opposite what the GV80 is looking for. Nevertheless, for price(!) and availability, I bought and installed this battery with the terminals facing toward the REAR of the car, since the dimensions and charging specs were/are identical to the OEM (as it IS the OEM battery). BUT, I had to do about 2 hours of mods to the cable arrangement and especially the hold down bracket (trimmed with bolt cutters and a grinder), and add additional insulation around the terminal bolts. Parts, etc. were about $25 additional. Saved a few hundred dollars and now can substitute any "normal" Group 49 off the shelf AGM battery in the future. The mfg/dealer told me that their OEM arrangement with Genesis says they cannot sell the "R" terminal battery with the "proper" terminal locations for another 5 years (ostensibly so Genesis can continue to capture monopoly rents in the meantime). Caveat Emptor!

Sorry, but I misread your post above where you asked me a question.
I never actually purchased a new battery. The dealer replaced mine with another OEM battery under warranty 9 months after purchase of a new GV70, and suggested I also use a trickle charger/maintainer due to the limited number of miles my wife was driving (it's her car). I bought one right away (NOCO Genius 5) and the battery is still in good shape after 3 years.
FYI - the price of an OEM battery here has come down quite a bit since they replaced it (from over $500 to about $300 now). Still high, but hopefully that trend will continue when I actually need a new one.
Let us know where you get yours and how it went.

Ok. First. This battery issue… a VERY deliberate move on Genesis part to gouge the customer. Absolutely certain….
I went TO Interstate battery. They said. They have a proprietary deal with Hyundai and can not sell the battery ought right. Genesis still wants $499, and didn’t have one. I talked at length to the guys at Interstate. I’m also a former dealer tech who specialized in fuel and electrical. The decision was made to put the group 65 battery in, which, in front of my eyes, tested at 1,000CCA at the shop. It has the proper terminal orientation. Its 50CCA less rated and a slightly lower reserve amp. If you are leaving your car longer than 2 weeks without starting it, look in to a battery tender solar, if in an airport lot, like ours. I’ve had success with those at my 2nd home/airport car.
The “mod” you need a piece of “something” which in my case was 1/2” thick plywood, 2” wide, 10” long to close the gap on the hold down bracket. It must go on top. If installed Under the battery, it raises it so the positive terminal fuse block hold down nut will not install. Being a former mechanic, I had a ton of rubber plugs for the vents. These should be available online or any hardware store. I just drilled the center to fit my vent elbow. You could prob use the metal HVAC tape honestly. AGM batteries really dont off-gas at all. I’m confident in this being a solid option. Costco sells these AGM group 65 batteries. So does Auto Zone but for $100 more. I have a ton of photos but no matter how small i make them, this forum says the file is too large to server process. 🤦🏼‍♂️
