  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Does anyone know how to open the cover for the GV70? On my G70, it was easy to open the cover and I was able to hot wire my radar detector in it but on the GV70, it does not seem to be that easy and I did not want to snap off anything if I am not prying it open correctly.

Appreciate any insights or suggestions…

I'm curious about this too, please post if you figure it out! I won't need to for a few more weeks, but the day is coming...

I ordered an R-D that should be coming soon. Would be great to tap the mirror instead of around the windshield headliner & A-Pillar to the fuse box.

Success! It was actually easier to open and get access to the rearview wiring harness than my G70.

The middle cover where you see cutouts is actually a snap-on plate. Pry it off carefully with a small flat head screwdriver. Once out, you will see the wiring harness cable plugged in. Pinch the harness tab and pull the harness. The ground is the black wire and the ignition power is the white wire.

I used the MirrorTap from mirrortap.com or you can get it from Amazon - Amazon.com: MirrorTap MTX-1010, RJ-11,10" Long Overall Length, Patented Radar Detector Power Cord with 2 Amp in-Line Fuse, Military Grade Taps, Made in USA : Electronics

Choose the correct black and red wire from the kit that will fit in the back of the harness in the white and black wire positions, then use the tie-wrap to secure it, plug the harness back in, snap the cover back on, plug your radar detector and turn on your GV70. Viola, it works great.

oh yeah my radar detector is a Uniden R7

Great, Thanks for the info. My RD is still in transit. I'll be doing the same type of Hook-Up.

I have the same Uniden RD as you. I am not Mr fix it by any means but I think I will try this. I assume that it shuts off when the ignition is off. I didn't think there was that much behind the mirror. Very cool thank you..

What mount are you using? I assume I can still use the suction cup mount on the R7?

If you could elaborate on this. I just looked at mine and can't see the "middle cover". Does the mirror itself come off or just the whole back plate?

Pretty sure he is referring to the windshield mounting plate, not the back of the mirror, itself.

Yes not the back of the mirror. It’s one attached to the windshield. You will see a small rectangular cutout right in the middle. you can pry that off as it just snaps into place. Just be careful prying it off

Got it. What mount did you use? I have the new R7 as well.

Anyone have a shot of the harness? I'm trying to do something a bit more complicated than a radar detector.

Well here’s the actual wiring diagram and like I said, white is ignition and black wire is ground

This is the mount I used. Same price direct or Amazon.

Thanks again for all the intel. I was looking at that center plate that you pull off. Did you pull from the top of the plate or the bottom. I just don't want to break anything.

I pried it off with a small flathead screw driver from the top. Although I think it will pop off as well from the bottom. So pry it off the top and put your finger in the bottom cutout and gently pull there as well.

Ok so got the plate off. Pulled the harness out. So is there one more step to get to the wires or do you just feed the RD wires into the tiny slots on the harness? Pretty small space to work around. I just want to make sure I can do it before I order it.

No need to pull any of the wires from the harness. The MirrorTap kit has the various wire taps that you can insert in the slot where the white wire is (red wire from MirrorTap) and then insert (tap) the black wire of the MirrorTap on the black wire. When I say insert/tap you will insert the mirrortap wire from the backside of the wire block connector.

Here’s a good video that explains it. The connected wires on the MirrorTap cable will insert in the back of the wiring block harness - u do not need to remove any of them, again, they just ”tap” in the back of it black and white wire.

ok I think the YouTube video link is on the posting. Let me know if it is not working.

Another very good YouTube video that shows how to do the MirrorTap wires. This is a better video that actually shows you how to insert the wire taps.

Another MirrorTap installation video
