GV80 Bugs & Other Issues

I just simply cannot believe that Genesis marketing didn’t know that 47% of ALL PHONES in the USA are Apple!!!
Why on earth would want to disrespect 47% of potential US customers?? Madness…..
ALL other luxury brands have smart keys that can be registered to the User.
This has been discussed before. A better question is why does Apple hold other manufacturers hostage to their expensive requirements? Not just Genesis, Apple has always been difficult for third party applications.

Apple does not play well with others. Never did.

Ed

If you criticize Apple for holding other manufacturers hostage, why is it OK for Genesis to do the same???

I've had the car for four days and there are a number of irritating and upsetting issues with it.
Notably, lousy, lousy gas mileage (I can see a class action suit coming on that issue), an app that suddenly doesn't work anymore, and an owner's website that now can't find my car! And to top it all off, none of the dealers know much about the cars either.
If I had paid $30-40k for the car, I wouldn't mind so much, but I didn't. I paid over $70K. Not good enough, I'm afraid. Not good enough.

The digital key is only available for Android and last time I checked, only Samsung has the NFC functionality.
That’s ok for me, because I have an Android. But my wife has an Apple phone. So she can’t even have the digital key to use as a remote.

I guess that some of us are just lucky enough to know that the better combination is to own Apple stock but have an Android Samsung cell phone ;-)

Turbo lag. Crappy gas milage. And a really annoying, complex smart key system.

Simple. Carry the Smart Key and the vehicle knows that its you when you get into the driver seat and everything is set up for you.
I really find it astonishing that Genesis doesn’t offer this simple, but important, functionality.

The Digital Key is ok, but many people just won’t use it because it takes an extra 4-5 seconds to make sure that your phone is on (not in the lock screen), then hold it to the handle, then put it in the charging tray. Too many actions, too much time, too much hassle.
And the alternative is to use the smart key, then press the User icon, then press Change User, then press the new User, then press OK and on and on and on and on. Too complicated. Messy, unpleasant, time-wasting experience.

This issue has really soured the whole experience for me with my new car.
It is a MASSIVE own goal by Genesis.

If you want to be considered a luxury brand, then offer the basic luxury features.
Don’t make the process of getting into the car such a complicated issue.
Somebody please tell me that this can be corrected somehow.
Can the keys be made to register to the Users???
What is “a MASSIVE own goal?”

Didnt you bother to read any reviews OR do a test drive before buying your new vehicle?

By the way, don’t wives carry purses to put hair brushes and car keys into? Not to mention our extra doodads that we can’t fit into our pockets because we are men!

Navigation System is the worse. Before you purchase, do a simply test. Use the voice command to enter an address. If it doesn't work, don't buy that vehicle.

Wow. Some strong emotions being expressed here. The guys having issues with the drivetrain have good reason to, but kudos for enjoying the fixed versions! All caps for a nfc card? 'Massive'???

Fuel efficiency: The numbers are the numbers. Nobody here was fooled when they bought the car. You didn't expect the car to get better mileage than advertised right? It does exactly as advertised, with variance of how heavy your foot is. So it's not really a bug, it's just what this engine / tune does. Having said that, yes, I wish it was better.

Nfc card / phone nfc key: is this really going to ruin your car experience? Spend 30k more and whatever your 100k car experience still isn't going to be changed based on a nfc card or phone app system. Keep the key fob in your pocket / purse / man bag / whatever. Enjoy the ride, because it really is something to enjoy. The nfc devices are neat gizmos and maybe can be nice in specific scenarios.

Nav: yes, voice recognition could be better. Yes, it should be better. fortunately this is something that can be upgraded over time. Name a voice recognition software that's perfect. Does the gv80 drive worse or visually look worse because of that? No. Does anyone base a vehicle buying decision on how well the voice recognition does? If it's that important, then use AA / carplay. That's exactly why it's there. For your personal preference.

I suppose if the car is that good, and we are all left nit picking the details, that's a good thing right?

I suspect the fan noise that bothers some people is for the protection of the turbos. Momentum keeps the rotors spinning for a while after the engine is off. Between rotor blades being blasted with exhaust gas heat and heat from a central bearing spinning at 150,000 RPM or more, even modern synthetic oils can't keep doing their job if the regular cooling system is not pumping coolant. it is common in modern turbo cars to have a secondary cooling system circulating oil through the turbo housing until it it cool enough to protect both the oil and the rotor bearing. The electric fan kicks in to help. So you hear both the fan and the oil pump running after you park, especially on hot days.

Years ago, if you owned a car with a turbo you had to wait several minutes at idle before turning off the engine, which was inconvenient to say the least. If you didn't, the turbo would fail early. The subsequent mouthful of rotor blades the engine swallowed meant a rebuild of it as well as the turbo. Big bucks.

Supercharged engines have neither turbo lag nor the need for special cooling. You see few supercharged cars today, but a lot of aircraft have one. I suspect that is because superchargers are larger than turbos. Or maybe there's some issue with air pollution.

There's only one driver in our household, but I "assumed" that the car's settings are saved to the key that is in the vehicle when the settings are saved. Can anyone confirm this? I thought the only time you had to manually change the driver profile is if both keys were present.

Last friday the driver's door (soft doors) open a little when I was driving the GV80 3.5T Prestige. The cluster sing and the doors logo appeared in the dash. I stopped the gv80 and reopened the door to closed it Same thing appeared: full close but after 3 sec the door opened a bit. Today, no problem with that door. I hate intermittent's problems. The other think I didn't appreciated is the driver massage function. Too heavy for me.

I am still having trouble playing my music using the same USB Drive that I had in my 2017 G90 Ultimate.

I went to another dealer and asked to test the USB in another vehicle. We tested two USBs my original one from the G90 and a new, USB Drive that I copied music into. The results were the same. Some mp3 files played and others indicated "file errors." I plugged my iPhone 12 into the USB port and through Apple Play, it plays the same music properly. The files are either mp3 or m4a. I read post from previous years suggesting the size of the flash drive might be a problem. I performed a test using a 4 GB drive and I got the same results.
I initially had problems getting flash drive music to play.
I ended up reformatting the flash drives (FAT32) and redownloaded music back to them mostly low compression format (AAC audio file- 320kbps) and and it has worked flawlessly since. FYI- My flash drives are 32gb and I rotate 5 of them for variety.

Do yourself a favor and do this with your audio files, the quality is truly outstanding and that's high praise coming from an audiophile.

I find the quality of the Sirius Radio feed good, but a bit lower than I expect though and wonder it the head unit that shaves just a bit off the quality.

Oddly enough, Genesis does not tie the driver to the smart key, unlike most other makes.

Hey everyone, how much road feedback in the steering wheel do you guys get going around 120km/h (~74mph)? Mine seems to have quite a bit of feedback (vibration on the steering wheel). I have the OEM Pirelli tires.

Curious if this is still related to the drivetrain? Coming from a 2016 civic I never had to much vibration/feedback in the steering wheel.

Edit: Of note
  • Dealership/3rd party tire place said a wheel alignment is not needed. (Before rear driveshaft replacement)
  • Wheels were just balanced like ~800km ago.

I can see pros and cons of both approaches. If you lose / forget a key, the car won't assume you're the other driver and adjust all the settings. On the other hand, the ability for a car to automatically adjust seat, mirrors, etc. on approach tied to a specific key fob can be convenient when you have more than one driver.

Directionally, I think this will eventually move to phones and watches for this segment and we'll get tighter personalization features; the option to configure how we want the car to behave based on who is "authenticating" to the car. The UX has to be great, though, or people will be put off (and as many of the comments in this thread show, there is still a lot that can be improved so rolling out features before they're ready doesn't help us as the customers).

Smooth as silk at 74mph. If you ever say a 2016 civic drives smoother than your gv80, something needs to be looked into!

Take a look back at those who had a drive shaft issue. ?? Similar symptoms?

LOL, I agree, that post reminds me of an acronym I learnt during my first week of my first job in an IT support role: PEBKAC - Problem Exists Between Keyboard And Chair. Just sayin'... ;)

I have a AWD Prestige model. I am close to 7500 miles. Have driven it on road trips. Its an extremely comfortable and quiet ride(Testiment is many of my passengers have easily fallen asleep. I have not noticed any vibrations or loud fan sounds. I actually really like the tech controls, the spiny wheel and the wheels for volume, channel change work great for me. I am getting around 20MPG, I do drive lots of highway and use regular gas(It doesn't say you have to use premium, it just says if you want better performance to do so) I might try a tank of premium sometime to see if I notice any "Performance differences". I really enjoy the Highway driving feature, it works well especially on long drives, lane change works nicely too once you get the hang of getting it to do it.

So bugs or issues. Nav voice never works for me. Though I have noticed if I say go home that works, or go to something it works. But not directions too. So I have just gotten used to sending my address from the app first or using apple car play. The seat message really isn't anything special, though it is nice on the butt during a decent road trip gets the blood flowing lol. The 3D cluster if you move your eyes back and forth it does get blurry. At night I do see the two red dots from the cameras. Though honestly since the heads up display has just about everything I need I hardly look down at the speedometer. I agree glove compartment is tiny. The auto stop when someone gets in front of you can be crazy when its stops really hard.

Ok not sure if anyone else has driven in ice storms or snow, but DAMN the sensors go haywire!! This was after the storm had happened and there was a bit of ice still on the car. The vehicle slammed on the brakes thinking something was in front when there was nothing there! Almost had someone slam in the back of me to do this and it was on the highway. I added a picture of it the day the ice storm happened below. View attachment 35811
That gave me an idea. For this scenario, it'd be neat if Genesis added an optional "ice mode" so that all (or maybe a configurable?) set of sensor-based features are disabled with a single switch.

Has anyone noticed that the second row carpet mat doesn’t fit right?

Mine does, just a little "humpy" on the center but it hasn't been parked in the sun yet. It appears once it's been heated it will sit down.

Hmmm. We’ll see. Mine has been heated up but hasn’t settled down yet.

Amen! Maybe it could turn on a coffee pot at the same time.
