  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I took out the cabin air filter behind the glove box to remove any debris and determine what shape it was in. I then tried removing the cabin air filter you access from the passenger side of the engine bay. You get to it by removing about 8 plastic clips to lift off a shroud. The filter clip is similar to the glove box design but also has a retaining screw securing it to the filter box. The screw is pointed in the direction of the fender leaving about an inch and a half to use an offset screwdriver to remove it. I can't get a good look at the thread but it isn't a Phillips head or blade. Does anyone know what type and size it is and were you able to remove it?

Does the GV80 really have two cabin air filters, or are you calling the engine air filter a cabin air filter for some reason?

Yes, it has two. I found out about it by accessing Chilton through my library. The Chilton manual includes instructions on replacing both but it does not mention the retaining screw. Note: it only shows your 2018 having the one behind the glove box.

Here is a pic of what I was describing along with the filter the manual shows you can remove:

Good to know. Thanks

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
Could it possibly be a Torx screw head?
I attempted to unscrew it via a phillipshead driver that got it rotating a couple of revolutions.
The 90 degree driver used was not ratcheted. I ordered a ratcheted set of bits, but have not yet used them. Due to the very tight space, I believe the ratchet component is essential to successful extraction.

From what I see, the engine compartment access position of the filter housing looks consistent with the angle of the glove compartment position of the filter suggesting possibly that the engine compartment access is an option and not a second filter opening. If I am wrong, what is its size? How come Hyundai doesn't indicate 2 filters needed on their parts diagram? Soon, I will investigate and report.

Chilton shows two separate filters. The one behind the glove box is horizontal and the one in the engine bay appears to me to angle slightly downward. I wouldn't think Genesis would have two access doors to the same filter but who knows.

My library also has Auto Repair Source and it only shows the one behind the glove box.

I wonder if it is one for recycled air (from in the cabin) and another one for fresh air (outside)? My previous car had a filter only for outside air. I believe that the single filter in my G80 works for both due to the air path it is in.

I think you are correct. This picture shows the engine bay filter drawing in air from beneath its plastic mesh screen:

The ratchet tool with a #2 Phillips head bit got the screw out in about 5 minutes. There surprisingly, was no filter in the engine compartment air intake box. I could see the squirrel cage fan and rear glove compartment cabin filter. It should be noted, the vehicle was purchased brand new. So, one filter it is, and one less maintenance task...

After discovering no engine compartment fresh air intake filter. my thought on this is perhaps as my vehicle was allocated for the US market and purchased at a Boston dealer, Genesis decided to forego the filter as the US has better air quality then many other countries abroad. Just a thought...

I might throw on a washable K&N cabin filter in it as a pre filter assuming it is the same size as the other one. That would probably keep the glove box filter a lot cleaner.

When I accessed the empty box, I did not take measurements, but I bet the main filter fits. So if K&N makes a main filter for the car I bet it will exactly fit into the engine compartment box. Not a bad idea on your part.

They do make one and it isn't too bad a price. You do not oil this filter like the K&N engine air filter. I have watched some reviews and people skip the cleaning kit and use a mild soap or just water. The refresher is mainly scent. Link: Cabin Air Filter

A $45 filter and $22 cleaning kit and the time to do the cleaning. If you keep the car long enough you'd come out ahead of the $12 filters.

Torx screw head, why not have the dealer take care of it during warranty period?

That would be fine if dealer would take vehicle in a few days, not insanely, 6 weeks to 2 months for routine maintenance.

In Korea, we have that filter, and it is for better air cabin quality.
Genuine filter parts code is ‘97133T6700’, and we can get it around 8 bucks in here. It really works well and highly recommend it. I guess US has better air quality, and they decided not to put it in.

Thanks for the follow-up. Chilton shows the GV70 also has this two filter set up.

Yup. Gv80, gv70, g80, and g90 all have two filter set up, and they all share filter together.
