  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Headlights turning off and on intermittently

I have not had this problem on my Genny but I did have the same problem on an Olds Aurora many years ago; replacing the switch cured the problem.

The dealer could not replicate the problem and it did not show up as a fault code (I'm glad I have the issue on video). They felt that the multi function switch was shorting out so they replaced the multi function switch assembly (part #93400-b1470-4x)

I will let everyone know if the problem persists

I am going to have to try to catch mine on video next time.

This happened again to me yesterday.

Auto was enabled on the stalk. Started the car after refueling, and noticed the lights start to flick on/off before putting the car in drive.

Got out my phone and was able to record it on video to take to the dealer.

The headlights are usually protected by a circuit breaker that resets itself after a few seconds instead of a fuse so that they can recover from an intermittent overload. Couple that with the fact that it happens more in the rain would lead me to check for a short circuit somewhere, maybe a wire loom rubbing on some metal until the insulation is worn through.

I had this exact problem in an MG Midget I owned and it was a wire going through a hole in the fender where a rubber grommet was missing. Of course that was in the early '70s so things may have changed a little since then. :-)

Amazing, must be something wonky with the switch or a ground/wiring to have the lights turn on and off that fast and randomly. Pretty messed up. Does it do that if you turn the switch to on manually?

On manual everything works normally. Have only had this happen on Auto Mode. Probably have had this happen about a half a dozen to a dozen times.

Took it to the dealer, and they could not replicate. Now I have the proof for them.

I do think it is the switch because when it flickers it is as if you set the lights to Auto and the sensor turns the light on because it's dark. Great proof though .As was said, they can't argue. Not sure how they couldn't replicate though....

I've never had any issue with my Genesis headlights and the car is now over a year old with 13k miles. However, the loaner 3.8 AWD (Tech) I'm driving while they work on my sunroof glitched on me tonight. I had headlights on auto and auto high beams on - as I approached a well lit intersection, the lights shut off completely for a split second and then came back on, but the auto high beam was now off. The light menu also popped up in the instrument cluster with auto highlighted as this happened.

Use. Manual. Fixed. :)

Can't use auto high beams on manual mode. This is likely just a bad switch so why abandon a great feature? My own car has not had this issue and I use Auto with auto high beam exclusively - it works great. If you experience the issue, make Hyundai fix it!!'

No - put you can use the manual high beams in manual mode. It works... quite well. It doesn't turn off the headlights either - a trait that almost every "auto headlight" system out there that I have owned has fallen victim to. This is nothing new.

The coolest part about manual brights? It requires even less effort than the old floor-board switches did!

:)

You can also turn on manual high beams in the automatic mode simply by pressing the turn signal lever twice.

My complaint of the auto high beams is that they do not come on when driving at lower speeds on neighborhood roads.

I have never had a car with auto headlights turn the lights off outside at night under normal conditions - EVER! In the case where the loaner "glitched", it did not just turn them off as I might expect if it got so bright as to fool the car into thinking it was daylight. Instead, the light menu popped up in the instrument cluster as it would if I had physically changed the switch position. That suggests this is a switch issue and a defect - not a design issue with how the system works (I've never had this happen with my personal car).

The auto headlights work well, so why stop using them instead of having Hyundai fix the actual problem that some cars appear to be having?

The auto high beams also work really well and are a nice convenience feature - it responds faster than I could manually and as the sensor sits high on the windshield, it sees approaching cars when cresting a hill and dims immediately. For me, it's a great feature that works really well and better than a human can. Of course, as all auto systems will do, it occasionally gets fooled by non-car lights and dims when it doesn't need to but, overall, it makes the experience of driving on dark roads a little nicer.

The one flaw, as stated by others, is that it shuts off below 27 mph, so you still need to revert to manual high beams in residential neighborhoods - not sure why?

I agree - I love the Auto high beams for highway speed driving but at slower speeds, it doesn't engage quick enough (or at all).

At 27 mph or higher they engage really well - occasionally get fooled by roadside lights - but, overall, they dim instantly and engage again pretty quickly (1-2 seconds, I 'd say) once the oncoming car passes.

i had this same problem happen to me yesterday for the first time. raining and at night with lights in auto mode - very scary situation - looks like i can have dealer replace the part that REIGN mentioned, but I didn't see any future posts from PUZZLE that defined his resolution....anyone know?

Dealer ordered a new stalk and that fixed the problem.
