If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. Headlights turning off and on intermittently

Ugh, HID headlights, gotta hate 'em. Seriously, most manufacturers are getting away from them for this and other reasons. The failure mode is typically flashing on and off like an old bad fluorescent light fixture. And like a fluorescent light, their life is seriously shortened by turning them on and off a lot. Which is what happens when you run DRL auto and drive into parking garages, your own garage, underpasses, etc. They are expensive to fix. Like a fluorescent they have a reasonably long life if you leave them on.

You can read about it here:
High Intensity Lights

Since the ballast/HV assembly takes up some serious room, there will probably be a healthy after market for LED replacements which should be easy to re-fit, unlike HIDs which were a pain to re-fit from halogen. Good halogens with projector lenses are hard to beat--they are the right color temp for night driving. They slowly fade and you find yourself one dark night wondering why you can't see. The only theoretical problem with LED is cooling.

I just hope mine make it the 36 months of the lease.

My dream Genesis would be a 2018 TT 3.3L with LED lamps and no pano sunroof.

And they are going to what? - not LED, still pretty rare and usually an expensive option.

@puzzled - Glad to hear they got your problem fixed. The problems i am talking about will begin to occur later.

@ksoze
No, LED lamps are coming down in price fast. HID lamps are about as cheap as they are going to get. GE (overpriced for everything) offers a drop replacement for about 2x what an HID xenon cost. Lesser known manufacturers are already competitive with HID xenon in terms of cost, but still lack the output and are still struggling with cooling issues.

Mines doing the same as on the video just not that bad yet.

Have the stalk replaced. It solves the problem.

I just had this happen on Friday night.

Stalk was set to auto. Lights turned off and turned back on.

I've had this happen to me twice since getting my '16 in July. The last time it happened I noticed that all of the lights on the dash and center console/radio/nav screen also went off at the same time & then turned back on at the same time. However, mine have only remained off for about a second; very quick.

Unfortunately I think it will just progressively get worse. When I first got the car it happened once, then it happened again. Last time it happened it stayed off for about 20 seconds then came back on, and the time before that it flickered from auto to drl off about 5 times before it stayed on.

This has happened to me as well. Seems to be after I've made a turn, activating the stalk. Foolish for the dealer to blow you off like that. Also expecting us to film it occurring is not very reasonable either. I am going to report this to my dealer next service interval. I will also note that this has happened to other folks.

Just show the YouTube video on page two and when the service guy do it just act like of course it doesn't do it while I'm here that's what I plan to do. You are very correct it usually happens with the activation of either left or right turn signal.

The dealer could not replicate the problem and it did not show up as a fault code (I'm glad I have the issue on video). They felt that the multi function switch was shorting out so they replaced the multi function switch assembly (part #93400-b1470-4x)

I will let everyone know if the problem persists

It's now over 2 years. Did it resolve the issue?

I have had my 2015 Genesis sedan for 5 months (I purchased it with 12k miles on it). On 8-10 different occasions, at night, my headlights unexpectedly turn off for 5-6 seconds, flash back on for a few seconds, turn off for a few seconds and then turn back on. Dealer says they can't get this to happen for them so they are doing nothing about it.

Has anyone experienced this? If so what was the problem and resolution? Thanks

I'm new to the site, and I have found it very helpful. I had this happen to me 3 times this morning on my way to work. It was dark and I had the auto headlights on. It would flicker between all the settings of the lights and go out. When I used the headlight on function I didn't experience any issues. I wonder if this has something to do with the auto headlight function?

I ended up replacing the stalk myself, and it has resolved the issue.

Hello,

I don't know if you ever found the answer to this issue, but it might be due to the main electrical terminal/cables in your car. I took my car to the dealership with a similar issue, it also knocked out the connection on my back up camera. What happens is, is that there's a design flaw in the car that cuts the main set of cables that runs from the trunk of the car to the front. The dealership has patched the wires as best as they could and charged me around $600 for it. But to get an actual replacement for the whole thing it's going to cost around $3000 to $4000 for parts and labor. I think this issue should be brought up with Hyundai and something should be done, because it happened to my car quite a few times. My back up camera still cuts out occasionally, and my headlights still flicker. This is a serious issue that can cause a lot of harm if the electrical was to cut while I'm driving.

Does anyone know how we can raise this issue up with Hyundai?

Thank you!

I am experiencing the same problems you are. I will post my dash cam videos of the issue when I get home this evening.

Basically, then engaging the turn signal the headlights flicker/switch on and off. The instrument panel shows the lights switching between auto and off. It doesn't matter if my light position is in Auto or On position the same behavior happens.

Initially the dealer told me that "Hyundai" doesn't like dash cam video because they cannot determine if something else inside the cabin is being manipulated. That was total B.S., what could be gained from that? The second time I was told they could not duplicate the behavior. Well Duhhh, you have the car during daylight hours and to top that off they really didn't try, because had they tied they may have seen the intermittent behavior being displayed in the instrument panel. The third time I went in for routine maintenance, I told them to keep the car as log as they need to in order to duplicate the problem. Even told them I don't care how many days or night you have the car, but "you will drive this car at night if that is what it takes to duplicate the problem. A few hours later, I was called when the maintenance was completed and they told me as a "Customer Satisfaction Matter" they ordered a new stalk and will replace it when the part comes in. Nice offer but I rejected. I told them to please follow the instructions on my maintenance/inspection write-up and drive the car at night so you can see when the problem is. As if it were magic they drove the car that night, duplicated the problem with no effort and called the next morning saying the part was on order and would arrive in a few days.

Well it has been since Oct 19th and the part is still not in. I am checking back today on the status.

Good luck, I was gonna do the same but I had the oppertunity to do it myself for 60bucks or so, and I took that route. To be honest if they replaced the stalk it should be fixed.

I am having same issue. Withing the last week, it did it three times... Good thing is that I drive mostly on well lit road. Does anyone have a part number? I don't want to waste my time at the stealership and want to fix it myself. Thank you in advance!

Hi, this is the original poster. The Turn Signal Stalk was replaced Friday Nov 9, 2018. I have driven at night for approximately 2 hours with no issues. Replacing the Turn Signal Stalk appears to have fixed the problem.

I've had the same issue except it happens only in auto mode, not in on mode. I stopped using auto mode since and it's been ok so far, and I'm planning on replacing my car soon so don't feel the urge to get it fixed. But good to know it can be fixed!

My 2015 Genesis Ultimate does the exact same thing. Had it to the dealer 3 times and they said they could not replicate problem, SO, I escleated it to customer care and I am waiting to here from the technical section. I assume they will get this addressed pretty quick being this is a safety issue! I also did remind them of the safety aspect. Will post what they want to do and if it is corrected.
