If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I was all set to buy a Genesis this week, then I read the"issues requiring dealer attention" thread. I was shocked to see so many problems with this car. There are only a few thousand cars out there and the percentage of probles is very high. I thought this may be normal with new cars in thier first year of production so i checked on the Maxima,my second choice, and there was only one problen. The check engine light came on for some cars and a new gas cap fixed the problem. All these problems;gas cap,hot ait in back vents, hard ride in back, nav system, bad tires, will effect the resale value. I am about ready to buy a Maxima,so please tell me some good things about the Genesis and convince me to buy one. I live in NJ and i have 5 dealers within 30 miles of my home and was able to get them down to below invoice on the price and just about pulled the trigger but now I am scared. Please help me.

Hello Mr. Lipari.. Welcome aboard.. And thank you for signing up!

The Maxima has been around for quite awhile. Most of the kinks, if not all of them, have been worked out over the years. Yes, this is a new model year for the Maxima - but it's not all that different than past models - except for the design...

This is Hyundai's first full-size luxury vehicle. There may be some issues - but they're being worked out. These types of things are also common on other high-end luxury vehicles - such as BMWs, Mercedes, Audis, Cadillacs, etcetera. The more technologically advanced cars become, the more they're bound to have issues like the ones you're reading about.

Also consider the fact that most people don't search out internet forums when there are no issues. So you're bound to see more people here complaining than otherwise. For the most part, the Genesis owners here are very happy with their purchases. Remember - the vehicle is under warranty. They'll get the kinks out for you without it costing you anything but maybe a little time. When all is said and done, if you're driving the Hyundai Genesis, you're driving a vehicle you'll be more proud of than the Nissan Maxima.. The Genesis is a game changer. The Maxima is not.

john, i don't think there is anything alarming going on with the genesis. not sure what you saw about the tires, i haven't seen anything there myself. as far as the ride, that has been all over the map on this forum. this can only be written up as difference of opinion.

M Benz has a horrible track record right now with issues. the VW i had which was built alongside of audi A6s at the time had 2 electronic issues very early on in the life of the car. the computer that controlled the drivers seat died the day i bought the car and the computer that controlled the headlights died about 2 months later. they were fixed right away by the dealer and i was very satisfied with the car and would still be in a VAG car, but the Genesis is priced where it can't be ignored.

this car is going to be named car of the year by most pundits and it is going have a good resale value. the car is without a doubt the best bang for the buck. buy with confidence!

good luck

John, I can completely relate to your post as I thought of asking the same question before buying my 3.8 tech. Every time I read a negative comment, I would be concerned about my prospective purchase. I tortured my dealer by wanting to drive / see the car again to check out my latest concern.

While I have only had my car for 4 days, I am happy to report that I have no problems and that I love the car. I am just amazed that a car with all this technology and space only cost me $37k. I have no problems with the suspension - it is softer than my BMW, but I expected and welcome that. I do not drive my car on a race track.

As was said above, these forums attract owners that are searching for solutions to problems. Thus, you may get a more negative impression of the car by reading this forum.

With that said, there are a few design issues (not defects) that I think should be changed: 1) when the trunk has water on it, a small amount of water does drip into the trunk when you open it. This is clearly a design flaw. 2) You cannot play the iPod in random mode with the tech package. Hopefully this can be remedied with a software update. 3) The home link buttons on the rear view mirror are not lit up at night. You kind of have to search for the right button when you approach your garage at night. Others have posted design issues / wish lists as well, but none appear to be major deficiencies (in my opinion).

The dealer sales / service experience has been underwhelming, but tolerable. I looked at many cars before purchasing the Genesis and only one Audi dealer knew the car as well as I did. I did not look at a Lexus, but my understanding is that they have very good sales and service. However, is that experience worth $15k? - not to me.

Bottom line, I pulled the trigger and, after 4 days, am very glad I did.

Jeff

You can play random on your IPOD with the tech package. What you need to do is start your IPOd in the shuffle mode and then plug it into the adapter. Just get the first song running before you plug into the adapter. I tried it yesterday and it worked. What you won't see are the song titles on the screen. Hope this helps.

Hi John--

I live in East Tennessee, and was told by the selling dealer that I bought the first Genesis in our market area (purchased in August). Other than the info I read on Hyundai's website, and some information available on this forum, I had no other data to go on other than a test drive, and comparison of the 'bang for the buck' concept. Obviously, I bought the car (3.8 V6 w/Premium Plus pkg). You can read some posts where I experienced some minor issues (some created by the selling dealer) but all were resolved. Don't get caught up in the issue of loaner car (why you might drive a smaller car while yours is in for service, etc.), or other issues about how nice the dealership might be, etc. Those are all nice things that will end up costing you money, but have nothing to do with a great valued car that has a 100K mile warranty on the engine and drivetrain. Bad tires? I think they are fine. I would ask "bad compared to what?"

It's now mid-November, and I love the car...still. I haven't driven it much in the last couple of weeks due to some personal health issues, but I look forward to getting back into the driver's seat and taking off again. It's a great ride--an INCREDIBLE value, and I can tell you that as a former Maxima owner (as well as Mazda Millenia, Hyundai Azera) that this car is one of the nicest I've ever owned. My younger brother owns a new BMW 535, which sits beside my car every day. A quick glance can't tell the two apart! Mine actually rides better than his does! (Translate 'better' as more comfortable). That's important to me as I spend a lot of time in the car w/work.

Overall, when I purchased I felt like the overall quality of the car met the selling price. Any buyer should ask themselves "How does the car stack up in the value vs. price department?" If the value is more than the price, buy it. If it isn't, look somewhere else.

This forum is a great place to discuss issues and possible resolutions if you have issues. There are a number of people who appear to be well-connected and can steer you in the right direction. I've never experienced that w/any other car purchase!

My advice is obvious--buy Hyundai--buy a Genesis. To the best of my limited knowledge, it's one of the only lines of any make that's actually experiencing growth! Make your best deal and look @ their website (hyundaiusa.com) to see if they are offering any finance specials in your market. I got mine at .9%/48 mos. That was another huge incentive!

Good luck--

Dan :>)

Be sure to read carefully. A lot of these comments are things we "wish" were on the car or differently implemented. That said, ANY new car will have some teething issues. I just got mine two days ago, and so far, (kiss of death), everything is fine.

The real issue will be how quickly they are remedied. I'm sure that some are just showing up, so it might take a little while to find the solution, and then to implement it. This is my third Hyundai (since 2002), and they just keep getting better - AND the service has been very good to excellent at my dealer.

I sure feel "safer" with a Hyundai than with GM about now . . .

John,
Buying a car is a personal choice, but with all the issues discussed on this forum I don't think you will find one unhappy customer. The issues seem to be isolated and far from universal. I just rolled over 4,000 miles and I am still ecstatic with zero regrets.

10 Reasons to get a Genesis instead of a Maxima:

1. With a Genesis people will stare at your car and offer you compliments, just read the "double-take moment" thread!
2. Stand out from the crowd. Maximas are quite popular; I have yet to see another Genesis.
3. One of the best audio systems available in a sedan for *any* price!
4. Maxima is not considered a luxury sedan or compared with MB or BMW the way a Genesis is.
5. At 100K the best drivetrain warranty in the industry. 60K vs 36K full warranty!
6. You cannot get a V8 Maxima. Bigger V6 displacement in the Gen.
7. RWD vs FWD.
8. Free 12 months XM subscription with Tech package.
9. The Genesis is just a bigger car in all dimension categories
10. Feature for feature the Hyundai will price lower than the competition to deliver the best total value

One BIG thing you can't fix on the Maxima...."front wheel drive"!
That much power through the front wheels is going to be constantly interupted by the ESC.
I don't want the constant interuption everytime I turn a corner and give it a little throttle.
There is no way I would ever pay that much for a "performance car" that routed all that power through "only the front wheels".

enough said.

actually there is a rumor floating that hyundai is now looking at them since GM decided to put the idea off yesterday....

I hadn't heard that, but it would make sense for a foreign car maker to 'buy into' the US domestic market via company purchase (instantaneous increase in market access, cash flows, etc.) than for another domestic company already struggling.

Guess we'll wait and see if any of this materializes!

Dan

YOu have to understand that the Genesis is a whole totally new car. New engine design, chassis.. etc etc.

The Maxima's part are derived from previous generations of maxima's......

This is the FIRST Genesis. There are MANY Maxima generations.

Anyone who wants to buy an American car company had better have a lot of cash and patience. Also there are political issues when purchasing an icon. Then again the market cap of GM right now is a piddling $1.8 billion. The assets are worth way more than that. Just the value of the distributor network or the hard assets is way more than that.

The Chinese would love to float the money if it gave them access to our market 5+ years from now.

Hi, John:

As a former Maxima owner and a Genesis (V6-Tech) owner whose car has experienced a few issues, I can tell you that I don't regret my purchase decision at all. Hyundai has been very prompt and proactive in dealing with the few issues my car experienced. The 2009 Maxima is a nice ride, but it's just not in the same category as the Genesis. Good luck with your decision.

:welcome:
