I was all set to buy a Genesis this week, then I read the"issues requiring dealer attention" thread. I was shocked to see so many problems with this car. There are only a few thousand cars out there and the percentage of probles is very high. I thought this may be normal with new cars in thier first year of production so i checked on the Maxima,my second choice, and there was only one problen. The check engine light came on for some cars and a new gas cap fixed the problem. All these problems;gas cap,hot ait in back vents, hard ride in back, nav system, bad tires, will effect the resale value. I am about ready to buy a Maxima,so please tell me some good things about the Genesis and convince me to buy one. I live in NJ and i have 5 dealers within 30 miles of my home and was able to get them down to below invoice on the price and just about pulled the trigger but now I am scared. Please help me.
Hi John--
I live in East Tennessee, and was told by the selling dealer that I bought the first Genesis in our market area (purchased in August). Other than the info I read on Hyundai's website, and some information available on this forum, I had no other data to go on other than a test drive, and comparison of the 'bang for the buck' concept. Obviously, I bought the car (3.8 V6 w/Premium Plus pkg). You can read some posts where I experienced some minor issues (some created by the selling dealer) but all were resolved. Don't get caught up in the issue of loaner car (why you might drive a smaller car while yours is in for service, etc.), or other issues about how nice the dealership might be, etc. Those are all nice things that will end up costing you money, but have nothing to do with a great valued car that has a 100K mile warranty on the engine and drivetrain. Bad tires? I think they are fine. I would ask "bad compared to what?"
It's now mid-November, and I love the car...still. I haven't driven it much in the last couple of weeks due to some personal health issues, but I look forward to getting back into the driver's seat and taking off again. It's a great ride--an INCREDIBLE value, and I can tell you that as a former Maxima owner (as well as Mazda Millenia, Hyundai Azera) that this car is one of the nicest I've ever owned. My younger brother owns a new BMW 535, which sits beside my car every day. A quick glance can't tell the two apart! Mine actually rides
better than his does! (Translate 'better' as more comfortable). That's important to me as I spend a lot of time in the car w/work.
Overall, when I purchased I felt like the overall quality of the car met the selling price. Any buyer should ask themselves "How does the car stack up in the value vs. price department?" If the value is more than the price, buy it. If it isn't, look somewhere else.
This forum is a great place to discuss issues and possible resolutions if you have issues. There are a number of people who appear to be well-connected and can steer you in the right direction. I've never experienced that w/any other car purchase!
My advice is obvious--buy Hyundai--buy a Genesis. To the best of my limited knowledge, it's one of the only lines of any make that's actually experiencing growth! Make your best deal and look @ their website (hyundaiusa.com) to see if they are offering any finance specials in your market. I got mine at .9%/48 mos. That was another huge incentive!
Good luck--
Dan :>)
