  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Here is the deal on the wireless Android Auto and Car Play

So, once updated, you can no longer use a cable to connect your phone. So if the wireless charger system fails, or won't work through your favorite phone case, you're SOL.

Nothing is stopping you from plugging your phone in to charge, you just will still be using wireless Carplay/Auto when you do.

That is correct so they just want to make sure that you are aware of that sadly.

I think what they mean is that you can not connect AA or Carplay or any data to your car through the cable. Data now will only wirelessly once oou upgrade. It did not say you won't be able to charge through the cable. At least that is my take.
I got my upgrade today, but I have not done the final step yet. I will get to it tomorrow.

I wouldn't use the USB port for charging anyways. I like leaving a USB stick in there with a bunch of music. For drives less than 30 mins, I use the wireless charger. Anything longer, I use the 12v with USB QuickCharge adapters. I don't like putting too much wear and tear on the USB ports and using the wireless charger for too long will just overheat the phone

My concern is that the quality of wireless audio will not be as good as a using a cable. If you are using high quality audio like Tidal you will probably hear a noticeable difference.

Interested in hearing other people thoughts.

I can't answer that as I have used a wireless device since day one in my GV80. I have no issues with the sound, but people have different ears. Probably there is some on here that can tell us if the music gets any more compressed if it is sent wireless or plugged in. I know back in the day, that was true that wired was better, but from what I understand, that is no longer a factor, but I have no facts to back that up.

Android Auto's spec says that it uses USB2.0 which is 480Mbps. WIFI 5 can get up to 6.9Gbps.... Most of my 16bit FLAC files have a bitrate of about 1Mbps on average. Even my 5.1 FLAC files that I ripped from DVD Audio disks only have a bitrate of 6-7Mbps and they're 24bit 96khz... I don't think it's an issue.

One thing to note is that when the audio data is in flight, it's going to be compressed regardless if it's wired or wireless. That's just the reality for data transmission. For the best audio quality, an analog AUX cable should be used or FLAC files on USB... but since most phones don't have a headphone jack anymore, that's a dead end. My G90 doesn't even have an AUX jack anymore.

The wireless AA/Carplay update was released today. I updated my 21 G80 today with the navigation updater and gained full screen Android Auto, but none of my volume controls work. The steering wheel controls and middle console controls appear indicate volume increasing/decreasing, but the volume remains the same.

Edit: Reinstalling using the same USB drive fixed my issue. Volume controls now work.
