how to fix panoramic sunroof creaking

Hey everyone.

Wanted to provide an update and let you know that I resolved about 90% of my sunroof noises in about 3 seconds after finding a thread through an online search that took me to a Kia Stinger forum.

No clue if this will fix other folks issues here, but it took about 90% of my noise away so much that I can comfortably drive with my shade open and roof closed which before was so loud that I would never do it, roof and shade closed at all times.

Keep in mind, the link above that I posted that has the Hyundai TSB fix involving the cleaning and lubricating of the roof and rails, I performed it with the same materials and it made zero difference in noise reduction in my case.

Now, after finding this other thread and doing what he said (cut and paste below) it worked for me and is worth a shot for you.

Here is the excerpt:

"Pushing up around the edge of the headliner all around the sunroof glass. I used the palm of my hand and gave a solid push all the way around. In two spots I felt and heard a "click".... you could feel the Velcro strips connecting better. Drove the car and now it is quite...not a single creek from up top. This is definitely the issue since I could reproduce the noise every day during normal driving. It has been a few days now and the noise is completely gone. I did let the dealership know what the fix is for future reference for others.

Had the car at two dealerships and neither could fix issue. They tighten all the bolts on the rails... grease the rails and told me they could not fix issue without ripping apart sunroof. I called them today and told them the fix for their records.

All that said, for all those that are hearing a plastic type crinkle sound from above your head.... not a rattle of metal.... and if you open sun shade or glass or tilt glass and non of that makes the sound go away....then most likely your fix is a 30 second push of the headliner where it meets the opening (all around) listening and feeling for a "click" sound is all all you need to do."

I did this sitting at a red light on my driver's side and a firm press on the headliner where the front and back door lines up was met with a firm click, one that felt confident as if something was being put back in place, not like something was breaking.

I did this in two different locations on the same side about 4 inches apart and now my roof barely makes any noise.

I did this on my passenger side to but there was no click or anything, but doing this on my drivers side made my sunroof noise issue almost completely gone.

Anywho, worth a short for folks having the sunroof creaking issues!

_Michael

I was able to fix my roof creaking with a liberal slather of silicone grease and oil. I can't get it to stop rattling though. It clunks over every uneven bump. I'm headed in for service at some point, but I'm a little disappointed to hear they don't have loaners for cars older than 3y.

Just as a minor PSA, you should probably consider dropping in on the 2015-2016 Genesis Sedan forums for (possibly) additional information on your 2020 and earlier G80. We've been trying to find solutions to the moonroof squeak and rattle problems (separate issues) for 6 years . I don't have the time to do a proper optimized search for it, but there was one thread where someone had nearly taken theirs apart (and took detailed photos) trying to locate the issues. In any case, here are a couple of searches to get you started. The number one thing to do is keep the edge of the moonroof lubbed. In any case, the moonroof issue is probably the car's biggest flaw.

Thanks for the tip, I'm pretty new and there's a clear difference between the DH and newer G80, but not much between the G80 and original genesis. I really like this car but the noises are killing me. Wish I could figure out what's coming from the passenger side dash area...

Does anyone find that the sunroof creaking is better in the cold ? I think mine was worse in the summertime.
Did the parts come in yet for your moonroof replacement?

The sunroof roof assembly came in about a months ago. However, they realized an additional part was needed. During the second month plus delay, they closed my Genesis dealership (Hyundai only now). They shifted my whole project to their sister dealership 10 miles away. I had to go there recently for my first service. It is a huge construction zone. They are actually building a stand alone Genesis dealership here in Long Island , NY. It should be completed spring/ summer 2022. But right now it looks like a disorganized trailer mess. Even though my records were sent to them, they barely knew about the project or if they even had my sunroof. So basically , I chickened out on them doing major surgery to my roof. I asked them to order a replacement sunroof screen, which the first dealership damaged while trying to fix the creak. They created a ”pull” in the smooth screen like a wool sweater. So I’m now in the 1-2 month wait for the new sunroof screen. The creak isn’t that bad. Actually seems better in the cold weather. I only notice it because the car is silent otherwise. Also , I could always proceed with the whole sunroof repair once this new dealership gets its act together. Thanks for asking.

Good luck! Btw where in Long Island is the new Genesis dealership going to be located? I’ve been looking for a good one (I’m in Suffolk County).

Hicksville,NY. It’s the corner of Old Country Rd and South Oyster Bay Rd. The dealership that closed was Rt 110 Farmingdale. The same owner is putting all of his resources behind the new stand alone Genesis in Hicksville. It better be nice !

Great to hear and I really hope so! Thanks.

I test drove a brand new 2022 G80 right after the Panoramic Roof was replaced due to rock damage during transport.

I knew the repair was extensive and was well aware of possible creaking and rattles after such a repair.

At the first bump I heard a faint creak that grew a little louder as I continued to purposely drive over rough surfaces.

There is no doubt in my mind that whoever purchases this car will be plagued with even more creaks from the roof area and possibly any area where trim was removed for the roof replacement.

What some people may not be aware of is that in most cases both the front and rear windshield also have to be removed to replaced the roof. They are removed to get the headliner out of the car and to access sealing points for the new roof.

Because the repair is so extensive it takes several days to properly do the job. A service tech normally will do the removal and installation of all interior trim and an outside glass company removes the old roof and installs the new one. Believe me this is not a pretty sight for the faint of heart. It looks just as bad as a dash removal and the end results may possibly be just as problematic.

All of this makes you wonder if a Panoramic Roof is actually worth all the hassle if something were to go wrong with it. I never open mine. I may occasionally open the shade but have never really open the roof on any car that I have owned that hsd one.

Some repairs are met with success with no creaks leaks or rattles long term, but quite a few are not.

In my opinion if you can avoid a roof replacement or just a repair for an existing creak or rattle by all means do so, but if that creak or rattle drives you up a wall all you can do is go for the repair or replacement and hope for the best.
If your roof gets damaged you really have no real choice .

I'm sure this has been discussed before, but I am curious. I have a 2019 G80 and the sunroof creaks. Is this caused by one of the roof pieces rubbing against the other, or is the frame loose? I haven't been able to tell. I am wondering if there is a way to put rubber gasket around the piece to isolate it from the other piece, or if this means that the frame needs to be tightened or replaced.
I am on my 3rd G80. I currently I have a 2021. The roof made so much noise it sounded like popcorn popping! Not being one too let the animals at the dealership work on my car I set out to find out what was causing the noise on my own. After much detective work and trial and error I determined the noise was coming from the glass roof rubbing against the rubber seals. I fixed it by applying PTFE tape to the edges of the sunroof where it contacts the seals mainly at the rear of the roof. This has fixed the roof 100% and now I can finally enjoy how quiet these cars really are. Not sure if this will fix everyone's issues but hope it helps some.

If you can and it’s not to much to ask, when you get a chance do you mind taking a photo of where / how you applied it? I have a bit of sun roof creaking too. Thank you!

Sure. I used a product I purchased from the largest retailer on the internet. Look for something called UHMW tape. It has an adhesive backing and just sticks on. Clean the surface first with rubbing alcohol. I used half inch tape and just applied it to the rear edge of the moveable glass. I tried to take a picture but the tape is clear so it doesn't really show up.
If upward pressure from inside the car at the rear edge of the movable glass stops the creaking this is most likely your problem and fix. I imagine that the tape could also be applied to both sides of the glass if the noise is coming from there as well but I did not have to.
Let me know if it helps.

I had various creaking issues with a Jaguar XF from the door rubbers, and on my current car a Maserati Ghibli with the sunroof.
I periodically use a product called Gummi Pflege Rubber Care Stick. It's a non silicon based lubricant which stops rubbers seals from creaking. Apply around the rubber seal of your sunroof.
The product is available on Amazon.

I had a creak in the rear of my 2021 G80 sunroof. Dealer replaced a gasket which improved things. However, there is still some minor creaking now on the passenger side of the sunroof. While having an oil change, I asked them to look at it again. They said they did the 4 or 5 things that Genesis recommends to fix the problem with no success. ( At least they hear it, unlike other dealers) Anyway, they took it upon themselves to order a new sunroof. I‘m picking up my car today and will be bringing it back in a week for the work. I’m hoping they are capable of this major repair and that I didn’t start something I’ll regret for a minor creak. At least the dealership is going all out to solve it. Has anyone had their sunroof replaced successfully ?
I had the whole panoramic sunroof on my 2021 g80 prestige & it still creaks

I believe it's a design flaw, so replacing the sunroof isn't likely to fix it, IMHO. ☹️ From what I've read on these forums, this seems to be a relatively common problem on multiple Genesis and Hyundai products. It's probably something simple, but whatever it is they haven't figured it out yet.

Just need to put some duct tape in there on a 80k vehicle. Joking, but not really. 😭

Happy to report that my constant sunroof creak (2021 G80 2.5T Prestige) was REPAIRED under warranty. I was experiencing a constant creaking noise when the chassis flexed (such as when going over speed bumps or driveways). There was also a light rattle from the headliner. They tried to replace some clips first, didn't work. Then they tried to tighten some bolts under the headliner, didn't work. I ended up sending the dealer and Genesis customer support citations from this forum with multiple people complaining about the same thing and confirming they got warranty repairs.

It took a HUGE amount of effort and pressure on the dealer, as well as calls to Genesis Corporate to keep things moving. They finally agreed to do a warranty repair about 2 months ago. Parts took a month to come in, so I dropped it off. Turns out they forgot to order some window seals, so it took 3+ weeks to get my car back and complete the repair as parts were on backorder. They gave me a rental car in the interim, so it wasn't a big inconvenience. I was just holding my breath on whether the work would actually result in the problem being fixed and not creating any new problems.
As I understand it, they had to replace the entire panoramic sunroof assembly and this work also required removing (though not replacing) the windshield. FYI, here's a list of parts listed on the work order:
  • 86121-T1000 MOULDING-WINDSHIELD, UPR
  • 87120-T1000 MOULDING-BACK WINDOW
  • 81600-T1000 NBD PANORAMA ROOF ASSY
  • 85859-3S500 CLIP-TRIM MTG
  • 82315-2W000 FASTENER-DR TRIM
Hope this helps!

I should also mention that if you are experiencing this issue, you should make sure you get it checked out and document in the work order whether it was fixed or not. it really puts pressure on them (depending on the state) if they are unable to repair something on the third try because you can invoke a lemon law and force them to buy back the car with all fees and interest, etc.
