how to fix panoramic sunroof creaking

I believe it's a design flaw, so replacing the sunroof isn't likely to fix it, IMHO. ☹️ From what I've read on these forums, this seems to be a relatively common problem on multiple Genesis and Hyundai products. It's probably something simple, but whatever it is they haven't figured it out yet.
I have a 2018 G80 3.8 Ultimate AWD , had the sunroof replaced at 20,000 miles, now at 34,000 miles and not a squeak or rattle from the replacement. When the weather is warm enough I use it almost daily.

Same with my G80. And then eventually it froze open. I had one dealer fix it under warranty (Genesis HQ sent me there because my local Genesis dealer is so uncooperative.

Then after the fix, the problem came back. I went to the local Genesis dealer (my Hyundai dealer is not longer willing to service Genesis) and they said it is not a covered item under the factory warranty. I had to get Genesis customer service involved. After 4 months of arguing and letters, they finally replaced the sunroof - under warranty.

Now the brand new sunroof is making he same old noises and every once in a while, it refuses to close. Correction...it starts to close, but then just before it closes completely, it decides to open up again. It will do this back and forth game all day long, starting and stoping and reversing and then starting the cycle over again. I was finally able to get it closed by forcing it with my hand while holding the button down. My new fix is to never to open the sunroof - a shame because I picked this particular G80 because of its so-called panoramic sunroof.

I really love the ride and the luxury of the car. Genesis makes a nice vehicle, but they have lousy service. But admittedly I have crazy standards; if my car is under a factory warranty they should fix it without months of arguing.

Unfortunately I am having other issues too, e.g., the clear coat on all 4 door handle is pealing. But again, the local dealer denies the factory warranty covers paint defects - even through, again, Genesis HQ customer service emailed the dealer saying yes, the car is still under warranty and yes, paint defects not caused by environmental issues are covered.

I'm living with it for now. I work from home and don't have to go many places, plus I other vehicles. But as soon as car supply catches up with demand, I'm looking to dump the G80 for one of the luxury brands.

These roofs can be problematic with any brand. I have been fortunate not to have any issues with the roof on any car that I have owned but then I only open the roof from time to time just to keep things lubricated as I do the same with my windows.
I mostly open the sunshade to let light in. Now that the glass is darker you really can’t see out of it as before.
The only reason I get the roof is because it comes with the package and it makes the car more attractive when selling or trading.
It takes a top notch Tech when it comes to repair or replacement but even then there is always a chance for creaks or rattles.

Happy to report that my constant sunroof creak (2021 G80 2.5T Prestige) was REPAIRED under warranty. I was experiencing a constant creaking noise when the chassis flexed (such as when going over speed bumps or driveways). There was also a light rattle from the headliner. They tried to replace some clips first, didn't work. Then they tried to tighten some bolts under the headliner, didn't work. I ended up sending the dealer and Genesis customer support citations from this forum with multiple people complaining about the same thing and confirming they got warranty repairs.

It took a HUGE amount of effort and pressure on the dealer, as well as calls to Genesis Corporate to keep things moving. They finally agreed to do a warranty repair about 2 months ago. Parts took a month to come in, so I dropped it off. Turns out they forgot to order some window seals, so it took 3+ weeks to get my car back and complete the repair as parts were on backorder. They gave me a rental car in the interim, so it wasn't a big inconvenience. I was just holding my breath on whether the work would actually result in the problem being fixed and not creating any new problems.
As I understand it, they had to replace the entire panoramic sunroof assembly and this work also required removing (though not replacing) the windshield. FYI, here's a list of parts listed on the work order:
  • 86121-T1000 MOULDING-WINDSHIELD, UPR
  • 87120-T1000 MOULDING-BACK WINDOW
  • 81600-T1000 NBD PANORAMA ROOF ASSY
  • 85859-3S500 CLIP-TRIM MTG
  • 82315-2W000 FASTENER-DR TRIM
Hope this helps!
I have this issue but have not brought it up to the dealership yet. Trying to figure out what the best approach is. Glad you hear you got it fixed.

Fantastic news. Congratulations. You give me hope that my local dealer will start coming around. This Forum has been a great source of news and information. It's helpful to know others have similar issues, but also that folks have been able to get Genesis to honor their commitments. Thanks for sharing your success.

Took mine in last week. Immediately diagnosed and ordered a replacement roof. Will take a few weeks before they can schedule me.

What did they do to immediately diagnose the issue?

I have a 2021 G80 3.5 prestige last July. and the panoramic sunroof was creaking and I bought it in at least four times to get service. I had to argue from November till December For them to fix it, so they finally ordered it and replace the whole sunroof in my car was in the shop from January till mid February. It only lasted a week until I heard a creaking and rattling sound again. 😑

I put the bug in their ear early, like several months ago. I had it in there for other service and mentioned it but didn't have the time to leave it with them. When I went back I just explained exactly what was going on. I told them it was very noticeable when then chassis flexes, for instance when you are going up a driveway apron or if you were going over a speed hump / bump at an angle. They explained that they would have to diagnose it and try a few fixes beforehand. There is a TSB that we discussed so I half knew what the procedures were. They tried the procedures and were unable to fix it. So they ordered the part.

That is not very reassuring. Do you have any plans to pursue it further? or just turn up the radio? I'm the 2nd owner of mine and LL doesn't help me if the dealer can't fix it.

That's concerning. I'll definitely keep my ears open for it too, but so far so good. If it's something you can't deal with, I'd suggest looking into your state's lemon law which will give you all your money back including financing, taxes, registration from the mileage you originally reported the problem the first time. I've had to use it for an Infiniti M35 hybrid some years back.

I'm guessing they'd be dying to get your car back, however, so they can resell it at a mark up!

I’m still trying to deal with Genesis consumer affair, and they’re still trying to work on it. But they’re trying to fix another problem that’s wrong with the car. there’s been problems after problems ever since I got the car

I just made an appointment for Oct. to have my G80 looked at. It pops and creaks. I asked if they were familiar with the problem and they said "yep we have one in the shop right now getting looked at".

Hello, is the fix still working? I've got a 2022 G80 that I'm about to ghost ride into a wall.

I should also mention that if you are experiencing this issue, you should make sure you get it checked out and document in the work order whether it was fixed or not. it really puts pressure on them (depending on the state) if they are unable to repair something on the third try because you can invoke a lemon law and force them to buy back the car with all fees and interest, etc.

Hello, is the fix still working? I've got a 2022 G80 that I'm about to ghost ride into a wall.

Hey team, sending an update and hoping maybe this helps someone else.

After 13 months of trying to resolve this issue, I'm hopeful and optimistic that I have done just that.

This has worked for me and I have been rattle free for about a month now, so ideally this was both the issue and resolution to my problem.

I always had what sounded like glass on metal, a rattle that didn't sound like a loose screw (I checked em all up top, all super tight) but more of glass tapping on something, a piece of metal.

Some days were worse than others, and when the roof was opened even a tiny bit or tilted in the back the noise was gone.

If the roof was closed and the shade drawn I could sometimes hear the rattle even over low radio volume and it drove me nuts.

I purchased the felt pads, sticky on one side, and placed them in different places throughout the sunroof area in spots I thought could be the culprit, both inside the car, on the glass, and in areas of the actual sunroof mechanisms, anywhere that didn't interfere with sliding or moving parts.

Finally, I randomly see this small rail that the glass sits on both on the left and right side and towards the front and only visible when the roof is opened and only because I looked for it.

What I ended up doing was putting one of the felt pads on this rail in the front, and on the back area of the rail, the pad went in easy, and on the front of that rail (closer to the front of the sunroof, basically windshield area) I almost couldn't even get the pad on top of the rail, under the glass.

I had to push up super hard, which corresponded with what I also would do to make the rattle noise go away and kind of how I isolated the area, and got most of the felt pad in there.

Anywho, the pic is zoomed and is the foam above the metal rail in between it and the glass. I have other pics but they are too big to add to this thread evidently.

I did this on both sides and all of my noise issues are gone completely and have not returned. Also, since this is on the inside, there is no concern of water fastness which I have also tested.

So long story short, this so far has resolved a long running issue and the real only thing that I disliked about this car (other than the back windows not rolling down all the way) and I'm stoked it worked for me, but I know other folks may have different causes of their noise issues. It isn't a super clean install by any stretch but you don't see it when it's closed anyways so I'm good with it haha.

Hoping it may work for others out there as well, and should the rattle return any time soon, I'll update yall, but getting close to about a month of no noise now!

I have the same issue on my 21 Geni! Had it diagnosed in Lindon UT in July. I live closer to the Vegas Lithia location so wanted them to do the work once they communicated with Lindon location. Turns out Genesis USA would NOT allow the Vegas location to order any parts, or do any work until they did a diagnosis themselves. I now have to drive 2 hours for the Vegas location to look at it again, then wait who knows how long for them to order the parts. Such an inefficient process.

Taking mine in on Thursday for a replacement. *Fingers Crossed*

Good luck with the Vegas location. They told me that Genesis doesn't have a fix so they won't do anything.

Sorry to hear that --- I'd recommend you email the dealership and include links to this thread and as many other threads you can find identifying the same issue, then saying Genesis not only knows of the same issue, it has repeatedly approved repairs/replacements for this same issue. Keep the tone courteous and say that you'd appreciate that they look into it, contact corporate to verify, and that you would like a response on what they were told by X date. You can add that you'll be contacting corporate and will be happy to forward along any info you learn. I did the same thing with my dealership when things were stalling. At the same time, a call to Genesis corporate mentioning the difficulty I was having resulted in a case number. As soon as there's case number and corporate gives the dealership a call, it will light a fire under someone's ass there because they can't risk screwing up that relationship. The result is that your letter makes it look like your dealer was, at best, uninformed at first, but if they continue saying there's no fix, they are willfully ignoring a legit warranty concern. Your concern needs to be in writing, or else it never happened. Hope this helps!
