how to fix panoramic sunroof creaking

Hey team, sending an update and hoping maybe this helps someone else.

After 13 months of trying to resolve this issue, I'm hopeful and optimistic that I have done just that.

This has worked for me and I have been rattle free for about a month now, so ideally this was both the issue and resolution to my problem.

I always had what sounded like glass on metal, a rattle that didn't sound like a loose screw (I checked em all up top, all super tight) but more of glass tapping on something, a piece of metal.

Some days were worse than others, and when the roof was opened even a tiny bit or tilted in the back the noise was gone.

If the roof was closed and the shade drawn I could sometimes hear the rattle even over low radio volume and it drove me nuts.

I purchased the felt pads, sticky on one side, and placed them in different places throughout the sunroof area in spots I thought could be the culprit, both inside the car, on the glass, and in areas of the actual sunroof mechanisms, anywhere that didn't interfere with sliding or moving parts.

Finally, I randomly see this small rail that the glass sits on both on the left and right side and towards the front and only visible when the roof is opened and only because I looked for it.

What I ended up doing was putting one of the felt pads on this rail in the front, and on the back area of the rail, the pad went in easy, and on the front of that rail (closer to the front of the sunroof, basically windshield area) I almost couldn't even get the pad on top of the rail, under the glass.

I had to push up super hard, which corresponded with what I also would do to make the rattle noise go away and kind of how I isolated the area, and got most of the felt pad in there.

Anywho, the pic is zoomed and is the foam above the metal rail in between it and the glass. I have other pics but they are too big to add to this thread evidently.

I did this on both sides and all of my noise issues are gone completely and have not returned. Also, since this is on the inside, there is no concern of water fastness which I have also tested.

So long story short, this so far has resolved a long running issue and the real only thing that I disliked about this car (other than the back windows not rolling down all the way) and I'm stoked it worked for me, but I know other folks may have different causes of their noise issues. It isn't a super clean install by any stretch but you don't see it when it's closed anyways so I'm good with it haha.

Hoping it may work for others out there as well, and should the rattle return any time soon, I'll update yall, but getting close to about a month of no noise now!
Any chance you can post an "unzoomed" picture please? It is hard to put in the bigger context that zoomed piece.

Most rear passenger windows do not roll down all the way.

I have the same issue on my 21 Geni! Had it diagnosed in Lindon UT in July. I live closer to the Vegas Lithia location so wanted them to do the work once they communicated with Lindon location. Turns out Genesis USA would NOT allow the Vegas location to order any parts, or do any work until they did a diagnosis themselves. I now have to drive 2 hours for the Vegas location to look at it again, then wait who knows how long for them to order the parts. Such an inefficient process.
Do you have any updates on how it went in Vegas?

The following was what I was responding to:

So let me put it this way, much like most new cars today, the glass in the rear doors does not go all the way down into the door as the front doors glass.

interesting... evidently i never even tried that :D

Fantastic news. COn

Fantastic news. Congratulations. You give me hope that my local dealer will start coming around. This Forum has been a great source of news and information. It's helpful to know others have similar issues, but also that folks have been able to get Genesis to honor their commitments. Thanks for sharing your success.
What a world we live in.... manufacturer does what it is obligated to do and we 'appreciate' their gesture!

I'm sure this has been discussed before, but I am curious. I have a 2019 G80 and the sunroof creaks. Is this caused by one of the roof pieces rubbing against the other, or is the frame loose? I haven't been able to tell. I am wondering if there is a way to put rubber gasket around the piece to isolate it from the other piece, or if this means that the frame needs to be tightened or replaced.
So I found something on a Kia Stinger forum and tried the solution, it worked. While this may not fix all noted issues I did for mine. I used the soft side of some stick on Velcro cut to size for the groove the glass feet sit in when closed.

Hope this helps some of you.

I had a creak in the rear of my 2021 G80 sunroof. Dealer replaced a gasket which improved things. However, there is still some minor creaking now on the passenger side of the sunroof. While having an oil change, I asked them to look at it again. They said they did the 4 or 5 things that Genesis recommends to fix the problem with no success. ( At least they hear it, unlike other dealers) Anyway, they took it upon themselves to order a new sunroof. I‘m picking up my car today and will be bringing it back in a week for the work. I’m hoping they are capable of this major repair and that I didn’t start something I’ll regret for a minor creak. At least the dealership is going all out to solve it. Has anyone had their sunroof replaced successfully ?
Mine creaks and cracks terribly. My dealership has ordered a new sunroof for me and I found out it came in today. I will be having it replaced next week. I am not very hopeful that I will get favorable results after reading all kinds of reviews. I am worried that I will have gone through all of the inconvenience and possible damage to my car and get the same end result, maybe my new roof will leak? I'm very upset with it all, I love this car but I can't stand the noise any longer, I used to enjoy just driving but now I don't. I don't understand why Hyundai would continue with the same design knowing the problems owners are having. This goes as far back as 2018 that I saw...maybe even further.

This was 90% of my issue and did the same thing a while back to fix it.

The other was the pressing up on the headliner on this inside of the car

Between those two, almost 100% of my sunroof noise issues have been resolved.

Worth a shot for anyone having clickity clackity issues.

I have this issue but have not brought it up to the dealership yet. Trying to figure out what the best approach is. Glad you hear you got it fixed.
I'm heading to the dealer July 3rd, 2023 with all of the same issues your stated. I will report back to this forum on my repair. It took about two-plus months for me to get an appointment at the dealership, not sure why it takes so long but I hope they are not anticipating dragging out a repair if it requires the entire roof to be replaced. The dealer that leased me the car is in Mahwah, NJ and they told me to bring it to Wayne Genesis after my purchase to have it replaced under the 60,000-mile warranty. I purchased the car post-lease as a new lease was $200 higher for the same car. The repair shop supervisor in Mawhaw NJ told me the Full Roof Glass is too heavy for the car and it was not reinforced enough to support the weight of all that glass.

I've just learned to live with mine. I know if I take i to the dealer they will act like they hear nothing, so it's not worth the fight. Bright side, 11 months left on this lease and my nightmare will be over.
Serious gut punch each time I get into my other half's 2018 Camry (half the price) with the same style sunroof and hear no sunroof noise.

They will not fix it while in a lease agreement. I tried but they dance around the issue during each service visit.

I was able to fix my roof creaking with a liberal slather of silicone grease and oil. I can't get it to stop rattling though. It clunks over every uneven bump. I'm headed in for service at some point, but I'm a little disappointed to hear they don't have loaners for cars older than 3y.
My 2019 G80 was at the dealership on July 4th weekend with our complaints about cracking and creaking noise not to mention a loud rattle like a loose nut or bolt. The dealer's fix was to grease the rails. We still hear the creaking noise and will most likely bring it back but the wait for an appointment is months before they can see the car. this will give us a chance to fully road-test the "Grease Fix"

My G70 creaks when it's hot. My 2017 Audi Q7 did the same. My wife got a new Q7 yesterday, so I'm interested to see if it squeaks too. I'm starting to the think the large size of these sunroofs is behind this. The market demands big sunroofs - but they can't cheaply engineer a way to make them not squeak.

Hello, is the fix still working? I've got a 2022 G80 that I'm about to ghost ride into a wall.
Had same problem.
After six visits to the dealer and adding some insulation to the roof as well as tightening many bolts or screws, they gave up and now ordered a full roof to replace the glass original. They say the pops and creaks are coming from there.
They will call me when the parts arrive. Crossing my fingers.
Sick and tired of cracking noises whenever I got in or out of my driveway (uneven surfaces) and the wife bitching that I have got a lemon.
Praying.
