  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hyundai Equus Spied on Stretched Genesis Platform

I never thought I'd own a 50K car (okay, I only paid 44.5, but technically, it's still a 50K car), but there's just no way I can see myself in a 70K car. But man.... I would love to have an Ultimate Equus, especially with the right re-design. My biggest complaint about that car is the trim levels as they are offered. I don't need all the goodies in the rear, since I'll be driving and not chauffeured. I wish they offered a trim level between the Ultimate and the Signature that included all of the goodies not related to back seat entertainment. I mean seriously, why do I have to buy a re3lcinging rear seat and entertainment system to get the power door closure?

I wonder why Motor Trend thinks that this is the next gen Equis when nothing else is different. Doesn't it make more sense to think that Hyundai might be bringing a long wheel base or L model Genesis to the market place? A8, LS460, 7 Series and Infiniti Q all have an L model.

I think they have it right - to me, the current Eqqus is getting long in the tooth wrt exterior styling and eclipsed by the new Genesis. Much like the current Eqqus was based off of the Genesis platform, it makes sense that the new one would be as well (only a little bigger this time). This particular vehicle would just a test mule using existing Genesis body panels - not likely what the Eqqus will look like.

Can't imagine what that car is going to weigh.

The Equus is already on a stretched (1G) Genesis platform and is already about the size of the LWB LS.

And if Hyundai were working on a LWB Equus (diff. from the limo), they wouldn't be using the body of the new Genesis as cover.

Otoh, using the Genesis as a test mule for the new Equus (which matches the timetable) is common industry practice.

Whatever they need to do is to reduce its size and follow Mercedes or BMW. I drove a new Equus back to another dealer. While it can be said to be very comfortable and well appointed it is just too big. No car needs to be that big. Just doesn't. It needs to be of a reasonable size, comfortable, quiet, great handling and the price is not the determinant. A neighbor has a Mercedes S class and it starts at $95K. I could see myself in that car but I can't see myself in an Equus. Wouldn't even consider it.

A salesman at a local dealership told me recently that their detail shop keeps buys with fixing all the scratches because it is so ponderous that their customers can't judge the distance well enough. That says it all. Just too big. The land yacths of yesteryear are passe'.

Before anything else is said please note that the Equus drives like a floaty land yacht compared to the competition rather than a tight focused sedan, giving the sense of too big, ponderous and all those nasty words.

That said the current Equus is smaller exterior wise in nearly every dimension as opposed to the new S550 that is in America.

Exterior spec sheet Equus:
Length: 203.1 in
Wheelbase: 119.9 in
Width: 74.4 in
Height: 58.7 in
Weight: 4659 lbs

Exterior spec sheet S550:
Length: 206.5 in
Wheelbase: 124.6 in
Width: 74.8 in
Height: 58.7 in
Weight: 4791 lbs

Much like the new Genesis compared to old the next Equus is sure to receive a much stiffer chassis, suspension setup, much better steering and responsiveness to allow this big boy to dance like a much smaller car. You don't hear people complaining about Contenintals that weigh 5000+ lbs being too "big".

Well all I can say is that when I observe the Mercedes it doesn't look nearly as big as the Equus. I was taking a good look at three of them up at the local dealer and the sheer size of the exterior metal seemed just ponderous. the Mercedes I look at doesn't look nearly as large. Perhaps it is an optical illusion. I won't argue with your statistics. Just the visuals that make it seem so.

In the front-on view is it just me or does that look like an intercooler? Of course it could just be an enlarged radiator to prevent overheating while pulling around an additional several hundred pounds, but IMO that looks like they're working an intercooler into the lower front bumper. There's certainly lots of room fore of the engine on the 5.0 Genesis for turbos and plumbing, it's just the sides that would be tight.
