  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I think it's almost official... More owners of the Hyundai Genesis Sedan feel the suspension is too tight. I have a feeling that when all is said and done, more people are going to have voted that the suspension is too stiff. Our regular members - who will likely be voting first - appear to feel the suspension is perfect. So I fully expect this poll to reflect that until the majority of members cast their vote.

Let's see....

I voted "perfect"; however, if there was a choice of a "a little soft" I would have chosen that.
Anyone who has driven a BMW would never say that the Genesis is too firm.
That is to be expected. People coming from BMWs would have to agree that the Genesis has a softer ride. However, most people don't come from BMWs. So more people are going to feel the ride is firmer than whatever they're coming out of...

I voted too soft. The Genesis suspension is overall ok, but it still leaves you with a little bit too much of that "mushy" feeling, which translates into body roll through the turns.

I much prefer BMW suspension, but then again they are probably the gold standard that all luxury brands should measure against for handling, imo.

Like Richard, I was compelled to select 'perfect', although a few more gradations in the poll might have allowed for a slightly different response. I, too, am a fomer BMW owner, so "too firm" doesn't come to mind with my Genesis. My only complaint about the suspension is on (thankfully rare) stretches of poorly-maintained in-town freeway, where the car tends to "undulate" (for lack of a better word). But this is <1% of the time, and I can live with it.

I honestly can't believe all the grumbling about the suspension (not just on this site, but on another Hyundai forum). I think it's just about perfect honestly.

Unfortunately, you can't please everyone, but for some to go so far as to say the suspension is a "problem" is crazy IMO.

It's not a problem, or I wouldn't have bought the car, but I too have noticed a little bit of "undulation" as a poster above mentioned on rough sections of freeway.

Overall it's a great ride, and definitely not worth $20k more to buy a car with slightly better suspension.

I think its perfect in the V8, at first it felt a little firm, but I think it is the perfect balance being comfortable and at the same time fun to drive.

I absolutely love this car, but as with any car, there are always things that you could tweak if given the chance. I wouldn't characterize it as "grumbling", but if given the choice (and since you are asking) I would prefer a slightly softer suspension - so I voted "too firm".

To be more specific if there were a spectrum of too soft being "0" and too firm being "10" - with a "5" being perfect - I would probably give it a "6.5".

Keep in my mind that my last car was an Avalon - a complete floatmobile. My driving experience was much different than that of you previous BMW owners.

Bearing in mind that I'm coming out of a 1996 Maxima SE and that suspensions have changed a whole lot since then, I find the suspension on the Genesis to be darn near perfect. I'd peg it somewhere between a Lexus and a BMW, since family members have those and I've driven them a bit. I've noticed some slight undulation on some of Atlanta's not-quite-so-level interstates, but certainly not enough to gripe about. Every passenger I've had in the car has commented favorably on its ride. Thus, I conclude that those people who are complaining so vociferously are making "much ado about nothing," or have their tires over-inflated. :D

Looks like "perfect" is the clear winner.

Of course, if this is the verdict of owners, those who decided not to buy the car might feel differently, and this could be why they didn't buy it.

I wouldn't mind seeing a base and sport suspension option.

to me, it's perfect, but I want the under steer" gone!
I'm thinking about the Eibach prokit sway bars and springs, or maybe just installing the V8 rear sway bar on my V6.

I have said many times that I have a problem with the suspension here. After a month with my 4.6 tech, I can say that I have alot of respect for the suspension in MOST circumstances, but unfortunately, I still find it a problem when the road undulates (heaves or dips every 50 to 100 feet on the highway) or where I hit a continuous patch of bad road. I feel the car almost looses control at speed and you need to clamp your teeth shut to avoid your mouth from chattering. I definitely didn't have this problem with my TL and instead just had a jarring bump, but with less up and down movement and no oomph or dampened upward movement.

This would be excellent feedback for Hyundai. There are many different road surfaces, and it seems like Hyundai didn't focus enough on a few of them.

Car feels very buttoned down to me. I DD a S2000, M roadster, and a TL on a daily basis and commute about 1000 miles a week i.e. lot of seat time in alot of different vehicles. I also track my vehicles and others and have been doing so for the past few years. I haven't noticed ANYTHING untoward about the Genesis' suspension tuning , and think that it is absolutely spot on.

Hard acceleration over broken pavement surfaces produces no sideways skip in the chassis which feel very properly and firmly planted.

Highway ride on smooth surfaces is to die way.

Sharp bumps and felt but muffled through the super-rigid chassis.

Handling is very very good - especially steady state cornering where the car appears to take a set and stick very well.

High speed stability (~110mph) seemed good too.

Mine is a 3.6 Tech with the 18" wheels. I believe it has Dunlop SP5000 tires.

If I observe anything else I will report. But otherwise, good job Hyundai. Please remember - just under ~1 BILLION dollars was spent on the development of this vehicle - its safe to say that Hyundai did its homework.;)

This car's suspension tuning is setup a lot like a GS350/460 - comfort oriented, but with just enough sportiness built in. For an example of car that is too soft, drive a ES350. For an example of one that is a little on the firm side, drive a 550i.

Given the suspension discussion, I would like to add my thoughts...
I find the Genesis (v8) suspension to be superb....- while breaking-during-cornering and accelerating-during-cornering, the car remains stable with just the right amount of body-roll, provides good road feedback, and remains well-balanced.
As for bumpy back roads, in my experience (coming of a C320 MB, 2001, sport package), the Genesis (v8) does a much better job of road handling, while provide just the right amount of feedback, bounce, etc. In fact, specifically, I drive a pretty-poorly-paved-patch of road, and I find the Genesis much smoother than my MB.
On highways (speeds between 70-90), I find the Genesis well-planted on the road, which gives me confidence (just like my previous German car), and while I have once experienced a "jolt" on a very-bad pot-hole (could be the stiff suspension on the v8), I don't hold it against the car since any car would respond in unintended ways on some unique surface conditions.
In my view, the Genesis suspension is very well balanced overall.
I agree with a lot of comments already made that suspension is all about feel and personal preference, as such, IMO for the size & weight of the car, I think the Genesis V8 drives more like sports-sedan than a floaty large/medium-sized sedan.

Having owned both a BMW 5-series and a MBZ E-class, I find the Genesis is "just right". The BMW was tight -- a real driver's car where you felt every inch of the road. The Benz was much softer. I find the Genesis is about halfway between the two.

I still wish they offered a sport package for this car with a tighter suspension, better rims, and a sport wheel. Ill gladly pay more for that!
