Hyundai updates lame-duck Genesis for 2014

An all-new Hyundai Genesis is on tap for 2015, but before that model arrives Hyundai is updating the 2014 version of the luxury sedan.

Given its impending replacement, the 2014 Genesis' tweaks are subtle, but should help the current car ride off into the sunset with its head held high.

For 2014 all Genesis models equipped with Hyundai's Blue Link will come standard with three years of Hyundai Assurance Connected Care telematics services. Those services include Automatic Collision Notification, Enhanced Roadside Assistance and a Car Care reporting system that keeps tabs on things like recall alerts and scheduled maintenance.

Buyers of the 2014 Genesis 3.8 will benefit from standard 18-inch wheels (up from last year's 17-inchers) and a new electro-hydraulic power steering system that has been tuned to be more efficient and provide better feel.

A heated steering wheel has been added to the top-spec 5.0 R-Spec model for 2014.

Finally, Platinum Metallic has been replaced by Santiago Silver for the current Genesis' last model year.

Hyundai's next-generation 2015 Genesis is scheduled to make its world debut at the 2014 Detroit auto show. That vehicle promises new exterior styling and a more luxurious interior to better compete with makes like BMW and Audi. The 2015 Genesis will likely arrive in Hyundai showrooms sometime during the second half of next year.

Motor Trend Version:

While the redesigned 2015 Hyundai Genesis sedan is just around the corner, the rear-drive sedan gets new features for the 2014 model year, including updates to the Blue Link telematics system. EPA-rated mileage for the 2014 Genesis sedan, however, drops with the V-6 and V-8 engines. A three-year subscription of Hyundai’ Assurance Connected Care services is standard on all 2014 Genesis models with Blue Link as is Automatic Collision Notification, SOS Emergency Assistance, enhanced roadside assistance, and Car Care, which includes monthly vehicle health reports, maintenance alerts, automatic diagnostic trouble code notification, a recall advisor, and in-vehicle maintenance scheduling.

3.8 models ride on now-standard 18-inch alloy wheels and use a revised power steering system that's said to be more efficient and deliver enhanced feel. Go for the 429-hp Genesis 5.0 R-Spec model and, for 2014, you'll get a heated steering wheel.

Although powertrains haven't been significantly changed, both engines have a lower EPA-rating for 2014. The 3.8-liter V-6 is down one mpg highway for an 18/27 mpg city/highway rating, while the 5.0-liter V-8 is now rated 15/23 mpg versus 16/25 mpg for the 2013 model.

Appears as if Hyundai is putting their inflated MPG ratings a little more inline with reality.

Obviously I can only speak for my experience, but, I get about 27 mpg on highway (driving about 74mph, cruise control, using E10 regular, gentle hills interstate) conditions. I have gotten up to 29mpg using straight regular (no ethanol) on the same 150mile trip.

Electro-hydraulic power steering assistance for the 3.8....that might be a nice upgrade for previous years. I wonder if it's "doable" and the cost.

Hmmm.... I consistently get 25-27 mpg on the highway with my R-Spec.

But I can see why they dropped it. I'm sure it's not fun for them to send us all "my bad" mastercards once a year. Mine should be here just in time for my birthday!

Electro-hydraulic power steering has been on the Tau V8 (4.6 and 5.0) since Genesis was introduced. Supposedly saves a tiny bit on fuel, since there is no drive belt load for the power steering hydraulics anymore (it is powered off the battery).

My guess is that the made changes to transmission shifting which lowered the MPG, but might make some people on this forum a lot happier.

If the 2014 doesn't have blind spot monitoring they can keep it lol....still one of the simplest features to add and it's irony at it's finest that the Azera and Sonata both have it while their luxury line still doesn't.

It is not always easy to add that kind feature in an interim model release. Did Sonata and Azera get them when their new generation models were released?

The Kia Optima gets the heated steering wheel in the EX model. Not available with my wifes SX due to the paddle shiffters according to my salesman.

If anything, the Genesis usually gets better than the EPA rating.

This.

Would be nice if the new heated steering wheel in the R-Spec was also a little beefier.

I only get 20-22 mpg highway without heavy footing it per the read out, which I've found to read 1-1.5 mpg too high. 2,500 mile road trip and and for most of the tanks I only managed somewhere in the 23-24 mpg range with non-stop driving.

The heated steering wheel is not a new feature as it has always been there on the Canadian version R-Spec as I do have this. Really nice as it warms up in about 15 seconds and gets pretty darn hot. A very welcome feature on those crisp mornings.;)

If you were keeping up you'd know that Hyundai had to send 1000s of gift cards to owners due to inflated MPG ratings. It wasn't for the Genny, but, IMHO they are heading off the same situation with the Genny.

Others opinions will be contrary to mine...... lol :D

The Genesis was included in the inflated MPG ratings, apparently due to some incorrect test procedures that Hyundai used. I believe it affected 2012 models. There is thread on this forum where members discuss getting the debit cards (renewable each year depending on miles driven).

In general, the Genesis does get better highway MPG than advertised according to just about everyone on this forum who owns a 2009-2011 model (including myself). Not exactly sure about 2012-2013 models. At the same time, the MPG display on the dash is about 1 MPG over-stated for most owners, but still above EPA ratings for highway driving.

EPA ratings are not meant to be exact or applicable to everyone (your mileage may vary), but it is important that all auto makers follow the same testing rules, so that buyers can compare one car against another, even if both cars have actual real world numbers different than the EPA ratings.

Thanks for the correction to my erroneous post about the Genny not being included. Mea culpa!!!

I beg to differ, however, about some claims about MPG by a good number of users who post their "claimed" MPG. Waay too many have said they get as much as 30mpg and MANY of them claim upper 20s. I call BS as a V8 in a 4100+ pound car ain't gonna' get that kind of mileage.

Whether they're using the car's rating or actual numbers they've computed was not stated...... but this will bring some of them out of the wood work, just wait and see.

About the testing procedures used to determine EPA estimates, well, those aren't real world driving numbers either. They don't run the AC, radio, wipers, heater, etc. etc. Which we all know is ridiculous. I recently read a real world test about a car which will remain unnamed that was claiming 38mpg (by the manufacturer) highway where in reality the car was getting 28mpg highway. Now a 10mpg difference in real world vs whatever crazy testing the manufacturer did is beyond ridiculous. When I was in the automobile business many years ago, the numbers were even worse. The manufacturers virtually did a brainstorming session to decide what number to put on the Monroney label. Tiz true :(

I can't personally speak for the V8, but on my 2009 3.8 V6 I "can" get 29 MPG on the highway (shows 30 MPG on my dash display, which is about 1 MPG higher than actual). I suspect that part of the discrepancy vs EPA highway numbers has to do with I am driving at 65 MPH, and my Genesis has 2 over-drive gears, while EPA tests are probably done at 55 MPH. But that is just a guess, and I don't really know why I "can" (under right circumstances) get up to 2 MPG than EPA estimates for the highway.

I know that there have been many owners with the 4.6 V8 who have claimed better than EPA estimates, but not sure about the GDI versions.
