  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I was a proud and happy owner then, not so much now. With 5 years of ownership under my belt, I must say that I am disappointed with the car. The first thing to stop working was the backup camera/ serius radio. Then the sunroof wasn't fitted properly, and after repair was noisy when operating. Then the "captains console" on the driver door stopped working, meaning no electric window control, or locks. Then the headlights would turn off when the directionals cancelled after a turning movement. The next annoyance was the inability to pass the cars very first smog test...with 65000 miles on the clock, the OBD2 said it was "not ready for test".....REALLY??? Dealer said they would "try" to get it to pass for a $120.00 charge, maybe more depending....! I found a KIA "drive cycle" on this site that finally reset the computer to the "ready to test" mode, after 5 returns to the smog testing facility. Now, the final straw, the paint on most of the exterior plastic parts is coming off, big flakes on the side rub strips, and blisters on the front grill surround/bumper, rear bumper.....Oh, the paint warrantee is 3 years....Hyundai says, "SORRY!!!". Oh, and then there is the loud clanking from the engine when starting first thing in the morning....my neighbors just look at me, and shake their heads in sympathy. When I bought the car, I was looking at the Toyota Avalon also but chose the Genesis because it was so PRETTY!!! WHAT A MISTAKE.....A $38000.00 MISTAKE!!! Mind you, this is a California car, babied, hand washed, kept garaged, and cared for by a 72 year old man who takes care of his motorized vehicles... LISTEN UP HYUNDAI CORPORATE!!! THIS IS NOT A METHOD TO ENCOURAGE "BRAND LOYALTY"....

Other than problems with audio systems, I would say your problems are unusual for a 2011 model, based on comments over the years from other members.

Either you bumper was repainted at some point, or you likely used some harsh chemicals or buffers on it to cause the paint problem. Even using a pressure washer too close to the paint can cause it to peel.

What engine do you have (3.8 or 4.6)? Are you using 5W-30 synthetic oil?

California is a tough place to get emissions test to pass if you disconnect the battery at any time. That does seem to be a peculiar Hyundai issue, but only on CA that I know of.

I have a 2011 4.6 Genesis purchased new now with 205,000 miles on it and it still performs like new. No peeling paint. The OBD2 problem is one I have not heard of. I have read that some others have had the problem with the lights and turn signal which was fixed under warranty. A few months back the fuel gauge sending unit in the gas tank needed to be replaced. So now after owning my Genesis for almost 7 years we are very happy.

The OBD2 problem is one I have not heard of.
This has been discussed before. When the battery is disconnected (or completely drained) for any reason, the OBD2 looses some information that California requires about engine history in order to pass their state emissions inspections. I don't believe any other state is as picky about this as California is.

Fer Gawdsakes, get a new car! This post is just a rehash of a prior post by the OP. Most of the problems noted were likely fixed by his basic warranty, which has now expired, but he fails to mention that. My advice is go and buy that perfect Toyota and your life will be bliss.

I've had the same problem with the driver door master window switch. Mine comes and goes. It's been replaced once and does same...I've just lived with it since. Same for backup camera, comes and goes. Other than that, mostly satisfied.

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
I've had an 09 3.8 Tech, a 12 5.0 R-spec, and now a 15 5.0 Ultimate. Man - I must be a glutton for punishment!

Quite the contrary. I understood from the get go that this vehicle was ten's of thousands less than truly comparable vehicles - I do not include the front wheel drive Avalon to be in that list (although it's a fine vehicle). I also understand that this is a VERY technologically complex vehicle and that will undoubtably include some issues with a few common areas. Yes, my head unit had to be replaced (under warranty) on both my 09 and 12. My seat switch on the 09 went squirrelly and tried to squish me against the steering wheel - It was replaced under warranty. My backup camera also needed replacing on my 09 and started to act up on the 12, but never needed replacing.

As already said, most of these issues are known weak spots. I bought the car anyway. Why?? I like it. I like it a lot. Mostly for personal preference reasons, but I still feel like I'm rolling up with something special, something that not everybody else has. Also, it just plain out surprises the hell out of most people who actually curious enough to ask me questions about this car. You may have a particularly troublesome unit, but I don't see it as being the "norm" for the majority of Genesis.

It's a great age for automobiles. Lots of choices out there. Just don't be fooled with the "grass is greener" thing. My buddy has been buying the best Toyota has to offer (first Toyota, then Lexus) for years. He just decided to purchase a used 2009 Genesis 3.8 last year and is absolutely thrilled with it. He just hit a wall with the financial impact that Toyota had become taking into account the initial costs and the servicing costs.

He must be another "glutton for punishment"...
