  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I can’t believe I switched to Acura.

Genesis Model Year
2015
Genesis Model Type
2G Genesis Sedan (2015-2016)
I’ve been a fly on the wall for a bit now but I finally bit the bullet and purchased a 2015 5.0 with 64k on the clock. I had a 2012 base sedan with the 3.8 which was a fantastic car. It was approaching 140k and had no issues but I traded that in for a 2015 TLX V6 fwd with 58k miles and what a mistake that was. Within a week that car was in the shop for both back wheel bearings, zf9 shifting issues, and a chatter under the hood while at a stop in gear. The software update did improve the zf9 for a bit then it went right back to its old habits. Also I hated having to rev 1st to 3500rpm just to keep up with traffic from a stop. For a 295hp V6 it sure felt like a 4 cylinder. The chatter did come back and it was coming from the transmission. Dumped the car and now here I am…got more for the trade than what I originally purchased it for. Please Genesis gods, forgive me for the betrayal. Don’t plague me with electrical gremlins that’s in the 2015.

I hope you don't get all the gremlins that my 2015 V6 keeps compiling.

So far Pano roof won't open anymore and out of warranty, paint on plastic bumpers starting peeling badly. There is a ticking noise coming from the propeller shaft and out of warranty, rubber track selector on steering wheel peeling off, window buttons take at times 2-3 pushes to get windows to open. Drivers seat lumbar bladder stopped functioning, air keeps leaking through the defrost vent even when the climate control is showing face vents only in use.

I've become very disappointed in this car as the days go on and really want to trade it in, but cost of new and used cars is outrageous right now so I'm stuck with the car waiting for next issue to hit. :(

I’m sorry to hear about all these issues and I can understand your worries. What’s odd is with all this hit or miss with these cars. Wonder if it has to do with build date and small revisions they made or where the car was manufactured. Not sure if they are all built in Korea.

I did weigh my options with other brands before going back to Genesis. There are issues across the board with all newer vehicles it’s seems today. I took a look at Lexus and I can’t get over their infotainment mess. They neutered the is350. I’m worried about Infinity after 100k since they put the dang water pump in the timing chain cover on the 3.7. Also the other issues that come with Infinity ownership. My aunt has a 2015 es350 and has had it in the shop multiple times for vibrations, rough idle, loses seat memory, and the car only has 40k on it. My Grandma has a Subaru Forester and has had to do head gaskets at 23k. The wife drives a 2015 Murano and has stereo issues, hatch struts went out, and I am just waiting for that CVT to explode. Yet I am glad to know that I now own one of the last rwd V8 sedans and I hope that feeling will get me through any issues that arise.

Know what you mean about the Infiniti - My G35s sedan was a blast to drive, but became a serious money pit @ ~80K.... Water pump, both throttle bodies (have to do 'em in pairs), crank position sensor, A/C compressor & etc.

Congrats! I recently sold mine to a dealer in MI with just under 64k on the clock, maybe two weeks ago. Great car, I kind of miss it. However, it did have more than its fair share of issues over the years.

If you can still get a warranty, it could be worthwhile.

Enjoy thay smooth V8!

You might try the Costco program for a new car. If you call (and are willing to travel) they can do a wide search to find a dealer still participating.

You can thank Renault for Infiniti/Nissan issues. They strarted using the Renault parts bin in 2003 and ever since cars over 100,000miles have all sorts of issues. Catalytic converters, transmission, component, etc failures. For the longest, the engines were the best and most reliable part (again, the VQ motor designed by Nissan back in the 1990's). Now, they have all this crazy turbocharged (Renault), multi-displacement (Renault) engines guaranteed to grenade after the warranty is up.

I'm not pleased by Hyundai implementing turbocharging and direct injection. Naturally aspirated has its place, but slowly being phased out for the promise of better fuel economy. Hopefully, they have chosen a conservative path with engine design. Something avoiding the mistakes they made during the last 10 years.

You're going to have to travel a fair distance these days...and compete with other dealers to get the car you want.

I’ve heard about buying cars from Costco. Is there any other advantage to shopping through them as in a warranty or special financing?

You are right about that.
In October we drove about 3 hrs to pick up a new car for my wife. It was great because 1. The dealer actually had a car that was not spoken for coming in soon and 2. It was slightly under MSRP with no negotiations. In contrast everyone local wanted thousands in ADM and/or thousands more in mandatory "fluff" (high margin add ons).

Totally worth it and you get 50% off an accessory after the sale.

The advantage is you get transparent pricing without negotiation. Usually that means invoice pricing or invoice +/- a little something. Right now to get below or at MSRP is a deal.

In normal times this is in addition to any incentives/rebates. Sometimes Costco exclusive incentives also arrive, i.e. right now you get an extra $5k off a new Audi A8.

Nothing on finance or warranty ime.

I might have to check that out if they have a little wiggle room on vehicles. Seems like there are certain cars that just won’t budge or gave me such sticker shock I had to double check I was actually looking at the right vehicle, for example the Civic Type R. Saw a used one with 12K mikes for 46,000. I could get the same amount of performance plus haul the family around for way less in the 2.0t Accord.

Market is nuts. Dealer who honored the Costco price (MSRP -$300) indicated that a 1-2 year old used one w 20k mikes would cost more than the new one. He was not wrong...

It truly is. I traded in my 2015 TLX for 2k more than what I paid for it. I probably did overpay for my Genesis but I couldn’t pass it up especially since the trend is towards smaller displacement turbo. V8s are becoming a thing of the past. I shake my head every time I see a Silverado with the RST badge on it. It’s going to break and at this rate, good luck getting parts. I don’t agree with Scotty Kilmer on a lot of things but small displacement turbos are being used in applications they weren’t meant for. I’ve heard good things about the 3.3t in the genesis and stinger as far as reliability though. 3.5 is to be seen I suppose. Hyundai seems to have really stepped up their game and I would even say has passed Honda when it comes to engines.

It all has to do with financing. For some odd reason if you FICO score is low, you can't get approved for a new car loan. But on a used car, instant approval. In the past buying used meant a sizable discount, but now days? Nope.

Agreed. The 3.3 and 3.5 are sister engines with only minor differences. Once Genesis goes through its next series of model refreshes, the 2.5T and the 3.5TT will be the only internal combustion engines left.

I am not sure I understand the finance angle. The used car market is wildly unbalanced with demand far outstripping supply. Supply is also coincidentally constrained on the new car side by myriad supply chain problems. It's the perfect storm for the price spiral.

Banks may be more cautious to hand out used vehicle loans due to the crazy prices? When I was shopping around, I would have to put more money down on a BMW than I would a Lexus that was the same year, price, and comparable mileage. Safer investment on the Lexus due to BMW known not to hold value?

That and BMW's tend to be driven harder. You don't usually see a Lexus being used in burnouts.

As someone who have owned a 2015 TLX V6 AWD, I hear you the 9 speed is just horrible and even dangerous at times when it gets confused and stalls the car when you need it most to move. On tech front the Acura did have a few things better (Built in remote starter, Climate control linked seat heating and cooling + Heater steering wheel and the Tire fill assist) but overall the Genesis is a definitely a class above
