  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I got my Wings yesterday

I can't answer for the other manufacturers but that's what I was told by a Hyundai reps

I call BS on that. It doesn't make a lick of sense.

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
When I go to work tomorrow I'll do a little research and see if I can find a bulletin from Hyundai stating that

No wings on the Genesis in the US wings is not available because of copyright infringement with Bentley & ROLLS-ROYCE
As others have mentioned, that is BS. The wings are on the 2015 Genesis everywhere (hood, steering wheel, wheel caps, key fob) except on rear trunk lid.

The reason (as stated) is that Hyundai wants to advertise the Hyundai brand to improve the brand image in North America. Same reason why dealers put their ugly stickers on the back of your car (if you let them). Outside the US and Canada (Korea, Middle East, Russia), there has never been a flying H on a Genesis, and copyright laws are worldwide.

Don't ever believe what a car salesman tells you. It may, or may not, be true depending on which answer helps them.

Ok, why would I lie
No one is saying you are lying, but somewhere up the chain in HMA they lied to the dealers, etc, because they did not want the dealers replacing the flying H on the Genesis with wings. It was an HMA decision that has been reversed in 2015 Genesis everywhere on the Genesis except trunk lid.

Bulletin, Smulletin, doesn't matter. HMA is lying about the reason they did not want dealers to change the flying H logo.

I recently bought an used 2010 Genesis sedan and couldn't be more happier, it came with the wings on the back. Which I love as every now and then people are asking what type of car is it?
I usually start with claiming its a Bentley.

Question I wanted to ask is why do some models have a control knob, a/k/a the Multimedia Controller and others don't.
The one I have doesn't which is fine with me.

Also now my wife wants the same car so we are looking to trade in her 2009 Altima with 25,000 miles

We use to be Nissan Maxima enthusiast but I have jumped ship and soon my wife will also.

Which model comes with the upgraded cooling leather seats, mind only has heated seats.

The DIS (Driver Information System) control knob comes with the Technology Package. You have either the Base Trim Model (17" wheels) or the Premium Package (18" wheels).

No sweat there.
We learn new thing everyday in life.
I recall when I was shopping for my sedan, one of the Hyundai dealerships sale men had told me the rspec model came with Brembo brake.
I was like, duh?
I corrected him by saying "you meant the coupe version?"
He said "no, I meant the sedan."
I go, "Oh okay, whatever".

Whatever, I have been with Hyundai for three years now in the car business for 22 years I guess you know better than I do
Please use the quote button when replying to someone, so we know who you are responding to.

You may have been with Hyundai for three years and in car business for 22 (completely irrelevant in this matter about Genesis wings), but I participated in a 90 minute chat session (with 20 others) with John Krakcik, former HMA CEO, and he explained why the Genesis is sold as a Hyundai in North America, but is sold everywhere else in the world as Genesis BH380, BH500, etc with no Hyundai id or emblem on it anywhere (only wings).

If you really believe the story about copyright infringement peddled by HMA is true (yes they told you that, but is it true?) then please explain:
  • show me any lawsuits against Hyundai, its dealers, or owners for putting on the wings for 2009-2014.
  • Please show me any settlement of lawsuit that allows Hyundai to use on the 2015, since the 2015 Genesis has wings everywhere but on the trunk.
  • Please explain why the copyright is only enforced in the US, and not in Korea, Middle East, and Russia, where their are international copyright agreements, and where there have wings since 2009 and no flying H logo anywhere.

And also, where are the retroactive lawsuits by Hyundai claiming wing infringement by Chrysler, Bentley, Aston Martin, Morgan, Packard, Mazda, Mini Cooper, ...?

The laws in this country are different than other countries. And as I stated earlier when I get to work tomorrow I will look for the bulletin from HMA

Bentley (VW) and Rolls (BMW) are not US companies. Besides, there are international copyright laws that apply to EU, Korea, and the USA, so you are wrong about that.

I don't doubt that you may find some doc that says not to install wings because of copyright reasons, but HMA is lying if they use that reason. How come Hyundai can install them on 2015 models, and on 2009-2014 models outside of USA?

I'm afraid you're going to lose this argument.
We are legally able to buy genesis wings (OEM genuine part) from our local dealership and have their mechanic to perform the installation at their shop. (That's the way it was done as part of the deal when I purchased the car).
How much more illegal or legal could it be, from the HMA's viewpoint?

Yes the United States 2015 cars have the wing badges on the hood, steering wheel, key fob, and wheel caps. The only location with the flying H is on the trunk. I doubt there are copyright issues.

That is correct, although HMA does not supply the wings to US dealers, as they do for all other OEM parts. The dealers get the wings from the same place we do (eBay, etc). The people who sell the wings get them from Korean dealers, where they have always been OEM parts in Korea.

HMA told the dealers to stop buying the wings and putting them on cars because they have probably spent $25 million on Genesis advertising over the years (each Super Bowl 30-second commercial was $3 million) telling people it was a Hyundai, and they wanted everyone to know that the Genesis is a Hyundai. Their strategy has been to "build the brand" and Genesis/Equus is a big part of that. With the low MSRP compared to the competition, and large discounts given off of MSRP, it is doubtful that Hyundai has made a profit on Genesis/Equus yet.

This is the response I just got from my parts mgr(You are right there was a copy right lawsuit about the winged logo. The issue has been resolved and the new genesis will come from the factory with the logo.)

Sorry, I don't believe it. Please provide a link documenting the lawsuits (filed lawsuits are in the public record, even if out-of-court settlements are not). Why would your parts manager know anything other than the lies told to him by HMA.
