If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I was returning from a 6 hour trip driving on I-40E in the North Western part of NC, I've always hated that route, the lanes are so tight and there are so many curves.

I am not sure what happened, I was not tired or anything, but I was a fraction of a second late turning on the curve and as soon as I tried to over correct it was already too late and I hit the rail on the left side, it didn't help that there was no space at all and if you go over the lane you just end up hitting it.

Now the whole left side of the car is scratched :( I have no idea how much it will cost to fix and if they need to actually change the doors/bumbers or if it can be just fixed.

I've always driven old cars and beaters so I never really bothered to fix cosmetic damage unless it was really bad. So not sure what to expect here, what do you guys suggest? Is it better to take it to the dealership or just try to find me own body shop? Any advice would be appreciated.

Oh man, thank sucks. sorry to hear.... Only thing you can really do is contact your insurance and get it fixed... It sounds cosmetic, so let the dealer take care of the repairs and get back in the drivers seat!

Lease or purchase?

Ouch it looks fixable. Just find a reputable body shop. Remeber with body shops you get what you pay for.

Certainly is fixable. Any good body shop can handle it. The only time a dealer is better is if they happen to have their own body shop as they can better take care of electronics problems if any are involved.

Your insurance adjuster may be able to recommend a good shop too. They get to see many of them and often work close for better pricing, though the only thing you should pay is the deductible.

Sucks when it happens on a new car but with a good shop, it will never be seen. My G80 was 10 months old when hit. You would never know from looking at it.

Would the insurance help at all? Technically it was my own fault so what benefit would it be to contact them?

Maybe your insurance works different but where I live we just pay the deductible $200-$500 and insurance pays for the repair.

Dude I dunno why I never considered that, I do have full coverage with $500 deductable.

Yea but then you're stuck with a higher insurance premium for the next 5 years because of it. And when you shop around it will also reflect on those premiums as well. If it isn't too much to fix, go that route first if not then go through insurance.

Insurance will absolutely cover it and of course there's a risk it may cause future premiums to increase. I suspect that repair won't be cheap and that you won't want to cover it out of pocket.

First of all, I'm sorry to hear about your accident; I'm glad you're okay! I-40 in Tennessee has devolved into an absolutely horrible roadway with potholes that you have to actively watch out for. Hopefully it's not as bad in NC.

Based on the damage I had in my car when someone backed into the rear door and quarter panel (which cost about 11K when all was said and done), I'm going to estimate that that's at least $15K in damage, probably closer to $17K in damage. Take it to a good body shop that is used to working with luxury cars.

Insurance will certainly step in, so long as you pay down your deductible. Typically deductibles are $1k or less.

I work for an insurance carrier and this is what I would do.
  • Check my policy to see if I've got collision, you most likely do if you have a loan.
  • Take it to a body shop to get a quote of the damage.
    • If the quote is much higher than your insurance deductible, use your insurance and file a claim.
    • If the quote is less than or equal to your deductible, pay out of pocket and don't even call your insurance.
  • Many insurance carriers these days offer accident forgiveness, meaning your rate won't automatically go up.
    • However, there are always back-end driver scores that carriers may take into consideration in the future.
Judging by the pictures you've got 4 panels worth of damage, which need to be repaired or replaced and then painted, and I would imagine something north of $4k, in which case insurance would be the way to go.

Update: so I ended up going through my insurance (Geico), they gave me a list of repair shops to choose from and gave me the option to choose my own shop, after doing some research I found that it was better to go with the insurance authorized shops since they are directly connected with them, if I went with my own body shop this might create some hassle if I wasn't satisfied with the repairs and I might have to deal with the shop to fix the problem rather than the insurance.

The body shop had good reviews and I was able to find an appointment the next day, they gave me a rental immediately (Dodge Charger) and they were very professional when I dropped off my vehicle and transparent about the whole process.

They have updated me with the estimate and the repair plan document the following day, the person who called me was very nice and explained everything in details, she even mentioned something about getting parts from Hyundai then she immediately corrected herself and said "sorry, Genesis!" which made me chuckle a bit.

Anyway, the repairs estimate was about $5000, she mentioned that mostly the damage will be repaired but there was a part that needed to be replaced but Genesis doesn't provide it, she said they will replicate that part themselves, I forgot which part she was referring to but she assured me that the car will look the same way it was.

It's gonna take about 2 weeks to finish so we'll see. I am "monitoring" the repairs through the Genesis app lol I just like the notifications that my car is locked/unlocked and see where they are moving my vehicle etc so far the only thing I'm concerned about is that the app is saying the left rear blinker light is not operational (it was not damaged during the accident), but I'm gonna assume maybe they removed something for repairs in that area and it'll be replaced? I will check that after I pick it up again.

2 weeks is honestly very good considering the state of things these days. I had far less damage on a Santa fe years back and that also took 2 weeks.

Insurance companies have deals with certain repair shops for pricing. They like you to go to their preferred shops but cannot make you. Usually if you use a recommended insurance shop the work is guaranteed for life if there are problems down the road. Go over the car very thoroughly when you pick it up. Looks for tape lines by window moulding and around trim pieces. Usually insurance will not pay to remove certain trim items to avoid a tape line from masking so you can be stuck with that. Most folks won’t find the lines but some of us anal retentive types can usually find evidence of a repair or paint job if looked at closely enough. Let us know how it comes out.

Update: finally got my baby back ! Everything looks good so far, they kept me with constant updates throughout the repair, I was supposed to get it back sooner but the part that they were waiting on was just the protective film on the driver side quarter panel. They got it today and they just cleaned up the detailed the car inside and out.

I only noticed some small chips in the paint under the driver door, I don't know if it's worth it to go back and get that fixed, it's barely noticeable.

Judging by the pictures, they simply didn't address or feel like they had to address the rail, as it looks similar in the original picture.

They might fight you on it, they might fix it and simply bill the insurance, worth a try to see what they say.

Looks good

did the proximity warning go off before you hit? Will it work for the sides like that or just front/back?

You know what? That was something that disappointed me, I know it was my fault but I thought the collision avoidance system was supposed to help in cases like that. I had all the safety features enabled including lane assist (the one that keeps you centered in the lane).

None of the warnings came off or tried to correct the vehicle path, I'm guessing the collision avoidance is only front and back. I've only ever gotten the collision warning if I got too close to a car in front or if a speeding vehicle is approaching from behind, never from the sides.

Does collision avoidance break for you? I've heard the beeps once or twice but I've never had the car break for me.

In my Toyota, the car will break for me if it feels a collision will occur.
