  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

It is 3:28 pm in North Alabama.

My father went to the doctor about a week ago for just a good ole check up and a stress test. He was mowing the yard this summer and had a few chest pains that felt like heartburn. Well a few days later he thought that those chest pains could have been something more than heartburn...so he scheduled an appt.

The stress test showed he had some issues on the back of his heart and that another test was needed.

Well, this morning he went in about 6:00am for the test where they go in your leg and put a dye in your bloodstream. Come to find out he has 100% blockage in one and 75% in 2 others.

Now, he is laying in a hospital bed awaiting the doctors to tell him when he will be getting a triple-bypass surgery.

I am a young gun, never had a history of family problems and have never been in any situations like this...even though my brother has a masters in nursing and a wife who has a doctorates in pharmacy. Im a little shaken up here by the outcome. Im an emotional guy and will cry at the drop of a hat...so, needless to say, I have been a basket case since 2:00. I'm scared to death of what lies ahead.

I know there are many who do not believe in the Power of Prayer but also many who do. I am asking that you remember my dad (65) and my family tonight as you say your prayers.

Life is precious and as the Good Book says in James, "it is but a vapor that appeareth for a little while and then vanisheth away." Cherish every moment and NEVER go without saying "I Love You!"

My intent with this message is not to throw a "pity" party but to ask for a plug in your prayers tonight. :grouphug:

You and your family are in my prayers, Matt.. I have a history of cardiovascular issues and these doctors and surgeons are REALLY good at what they do. I'm confident that your father will come out of this feeling much better than he was........

And in my prayers as well Matt! I'm sure your Dad will pull through OK. Please keep us posted!

Matt,

My Dad went through the same procedure several years ago. After the by-pass he was like a new man.

I will definitely be lifting this situation up to the Lord. May He bring healing, comfort, and peace to your Dad and the rest of the family.

God Bless

Likewise Matt.

You can see right here that there IS power in prayer. If there wasn't... you wouldn't see 5+ of us agreeing with you in this moment. I know I can't count the number of times it has directly been true in my life and there is no other explaination. Even when I bought my Genesis :).

We all just proved it works in the truest sense of the word my friend. You and your Dad will be lifted up.

Matt - My brother in law recently underwent a bypass so my wife and I had read up on the procedure, which has been around for 30, years. One statistic that sticks with me was the SUCCESS RATE...98%. So combine prayer with the science and your Dad will do just fine.

Matt; I too have had heart surgery except in my case they put an artificial heart valve in when I was 40. As others have already said, the Doctors and their assistants now are all so very good at these types of things. My surgery was 18 years ago and I have never had the first hint of any problems. I am confident that your Dad will do just fine.
He and you and your family will all definately be in my prayers.

Our prayers will be with you as well. I have full confidence that the doctors will do everything they can and your dad will be as good as new very soon.

Matt,

You and your dad will certainly be in our prayers.

A good friend of mine, who has really had little in the way of problems, just had a fainting spell - and ended up with a pacemaker. We are all "just an inch away", I guess.

Now, especially, is the time to remember, and rejoice. God grant the surgeons the skill and steady hands to complete the tasks ahead.

Matt:

You and your family are in our thoughts and prayers. Dad will be fine! They caught it early. Granted he will be one sore puppy on Christmas, but will be 100% in about 90 days. Remember this thread:

Keep us posted.

Matt,

I know this can be a trying time for you. My uncle had heart surgery decades ago and has been doing very well since. The only thing that will change with your dad after the surgery is his eating habits. Which are all for the better anyway :) - I lift your dad up in Jesus' name, the Doctor of all doctors. That God move by the prayers of His people and perform a miracle or orchestrate the doctors hands in performing this surgery. The price was already paid by the one who shed his blood for us.

Proverbs 3:5

Ok...I can barely see to type for the emotion right now.

Thanks to all for your kind words and prayers.

My wife and I drove to Huntsville around 6:00 to see daddy and he was in great spirits. Which helped me sooooooo much! He had to stay the night because they wanted to take him this morning and "paint" him up. The doctor said that he will get tattooed today with ink marking locations for harvesting veins. They will also be doing a few other tests today to determine when the surgery will be. If things look ok, they will postpone the surgery to the 30th and if not, it will be done today.

I am truly blessed in my life and its in times like this when family, friends, and people I hardly know are thinking and praying for us, that I am humbled. Words cannot express my gratitude and appreciation to all of you.

Whenever the surgery may be, I am going to print this thread and give it to dad. I know it will make everybody cry, but it will also lift us all up! :)

I will keep you updated as I am updated.

As mentioned earlier, I do not know many of you, but your my friends. I can't finish this post without saying that I love each and everyone of you and thank you for your kind words of encouragement.

Matt

Have faith, Dad will be good as new and ready to roll for another couple of hundreds of thousands of miles.

I can't tell you not to worry, Matt, but like others here, I can assure you that the success rate of bypass surgery is truly remarkable (considering what the procedure involves ). While your dad will have some rough days recovering and getting his stamina back, the odds are he'll feel a helluva lot better a few months from now...he'll likely swear that he's a "new man". My dad had a five-way bypass a decade ago, and now at age 84, he and I can still do 18 holes together.

Matt:

Once again, Ric made the call. As you recall, 7 weeks ago yesterday I was laying face up in an operating room with my mind who knows where courtesy of anesthesia, getting ready to have my chest cut open like a Christmas Turkey and having quadruple bypass surgery. 7 weeks later (or before) several interesting things happened:

1. After being very concerned about some pains I was experiencing at one point, a voice clear as a bell spoke to me saying "His hands were my hands"--an obvious reference to the surgeon and Who was leading him and some concerns I had relating to a cold (and the effects of coughing) that I caught while in the hospital.

2. I joined a cardiac rehab program which included education and exercise monitored by RNs, exercise physiologists and the like. When I went to the program 3 weeks ago, I couldn't stand up straight and had trouble walking, sleeping, etc. I can walk normally again (w/o straining), I sleep thru the entire evening, and I feel great.

3. I'm back at work about 2/3 of the week--the part missing is related to the rehab time 3 times per week during the day. I'm fortunate to have good support from my employer, that I've been with for a total of about 16 years.

All of these things and many more are a DIRECT RESULT of many people offering prayers and His answering of those prayers. Some of those people are here on this site, and others are around you such as fellow employees, associates, church members, etc. Many will offer prayers that you will never even be aware of, but they still exist.

All in all, your dad is in all our prayers, including mine, since I have a clear memory of what he's dealing with. Like others have mentioned, his lifestyle, diet, etc., will change dramatically after this is over. I've lost 35 lbs. since my surgery...and the exercise guys say they want me down another 40....this will be interesting! My clothes already don't fit very well anymore!

You are also in all our prayers. As the leader of your family, your ability to lead comes in the strength to help those that don't have strength.

I could go on, but God is with you...and so are we. Please let any of us know if there's anything that we can do for you. We may be in different parts of the country, but there is a common thread that holds us together.

"One can send a thousand to flight, and two ten thousand..."

Matt-
Amen... Amen... Amen to what Dan (and others) said.

If your Dad is like you (and I'm guessing he is and more so from what you've written publicly and privately).. look at it this way...
Dad has a Full Coverage Extended Warranty... for life!

Matt;

We all love you and your family too!!! Our thoughts and prayers will be with you and your family when the surgery takes place. Your Dad should be alright in no time, after all he wants another ride it that Geny!!!

UPDATE: December 22, 2008

Ok...time for an update!

Things are going great! Dad is all tattooed up with a Sharpie marking all the veins and arteries that are to either be harvested or avoided.

He was sent home over the weekend and they have delayed the sugery until January 6. They said that since he did NOT have a heart attack and that his heart is in great shape that he would be fine until the surgery.

Over the weekend, we celebrated our 4th Anniversary at a small town steak house. Dad was there and in wonderful spirits. I had prepared a little packet for him to read when he got home but as we waited on our food he just had to see what was inside...so he opened it. Inside this packet was every post and private message that was sent to me over the past week or so. While he was reading, the rest of the family were discussing our baby thats on the way and all that girly stuff that goes along with it...when all the sudden, dad slid his chair back and went to his knees. The rest of the family, for a minute, thought he was having a heart attack...but I knew exactly what was going on. He felt the power of prayer, encouragement, uplifting comments and experiences of people he does not know. This was AMAZING!

By the time we were paying everybody at the table had read every word in the packet and there was not a dry eye to be found.

Dad said that after the surgery, he wants to send a big thank you card to everybody here so I figured that I may set him up an account or just let him start a thread with my account. He...and us...are so grateful for each and every one of you!

May God Bless each and every one of you as he continues to Bless us!

Matt

Matt:

That is absolutely wonderful news--especially during this time of year!

I can honestly say I'm not surprised! God has never been in the 'business' of letting people down!

God's blessings continually to you and your extended family!
