  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Illinois says my Genesis is a Hyundai

Wow. And, you having such active participation? I wish it would refocus on the original issue. Why are there so many discrepancies in registration and titling by various states other than as dictated by Hyundai Capital America?

So would I, with people who can actually contribute toward the actual topic of discussion. (ie; owners of 2017/2018 Genesis) . But there always wishful thinking!;)

Just got the title back for my 2018 Genesis G80 and Illinois says MAKE Hyundai MODEL Genesis.

Of course, it should read MAKE Genesis MODEL G80

Time to do battle with the bureaucrats :)

~5 months later - nothing has changed, my 2018 G80 Sport shows as HYUNDAI make, lol

At least State Farm has it right and it says Genesis G80 Sport.

Depending on what state you live in, you may not own a 2017/2018 Genesis, you may in fact own a Hyundai Genesis G80 or Hyundai Genesis G90.

I actually own one, so I can say without a doubt my registration and title says; "Genesis" not Hyunda in New Mexico;). Heck, even USAA has it right.

I actually own one, also. And as I posted earlier in this thread, I along with at least one other, have documentation that our Genesis' is registered and titled as Hyundai in our respective states. I would like to hear how other 2017/18 owners/leasees vehicle's are registered/titled in their respective states. As all 3 substantiated owners have posted all our vehicles are correctly designated as Genesis and respective model by our insurance carriers.

Spanky61, is your vehicle leased or financed by any third party financial institution other than Genesis Finance as a subsidiary of Hyundai Capital America? Or owned outright?

Third party.

Third party.
That may prove to be the crux of the issue. Genesis Finance as a subsidiary of Hyundai Capital America possibly is the one imposing these registration /titling guidelines.

I thought this was settled and you yourself settled it. if it’s leased by Hyundai it is registered as Hyundai. Mark_888 May have confused the issue by saying it differed by state but I don’t think that is the case. The only think we don’t know is why. Maybe having to do with franchise laws but no one will really know until we hear it from Hyundai. I am sure someone can think of more to say about this but I can’t.

My fault?

As far as hearing from Hyundai or Genesis, I don't think they will publicly say what is really the real reason for the registration issue. That's the fundamental difference between you and me. You believe everything Hyundai and Genesis says, and you assume that they have a good reason for everything they do (and refuse to admit that sometimes they just make bad decisions or mistakes).

What in the world are you talking about? Where did you get all that in my post?

I didn’t say it was your fault. I said you “may” have confused the issue by saying it was dependent by the state. You presented that as a fact, so where is the proof? Deduction won’t work here, you don’t have enough data. I simply gave a possible explanation. I never said Hyundai said this. You’re welcome to your own but don’t present it as a fact to mislead folks to keep this thread going.
I would encourage anyone reread my post and make up their own mind. I think a poster already said how the registration was done was dependent on whether Hyundai did the leasing (not the state). Am I misquoting someone?

I will admit that I didn't initially think that Hyundai Motor (including Hyundai Finance) was behind the registration of the G80 or G90 as a Hyundai. I now admit that is possible and maybe likely.

However, even if that is true, I doubt that is the initial reason why some G80 and G90 vehicles were registered as a Hyundai starting back in 2016 (when the 2017 Genesis models were first sold). That is because at that time when the Genesis brand was first announced, they said that for time being they would be sold at Hyundai dealers, and even though they eventually wanted separate dealerships, they had no fixed timetable, and they did not say anything about having only 100 Genesis dealers.

It is doubtful that if they wanted only 100 Genesis dealers for the 2019 models, that they would have started out with 350 dealers for the 2017-2018 models (as was the case). So initially they thought they could sell them as a Genesis, because they didn't understand all the legal requirements of each state for a new auto brand, and/or regarding auto dealer franchise laws.

So I do suspect the initial problem with registration "may" have varied by state, as well as by whether Hyundai Finance was involved, but obviously I am still not sure. Remember that they got in trouble in Louisiana for selling the Genesis brand without state approval for a new brand, so it looks to me like it was only later they claimed the G80 and G90 were both a Hyundai brand to get around those state requirements.

It is settled to my satisfaction. Whether there are other factors involved is yet to be determined and could help to answer the "why". Maybe it will never be clearly defined to the satisfaction of the general ownership. However, receiving confirmation from more than three 2017/18 owners/lessees from various states as to how their vehicle is registered/titled and what is the financial status of their vehicle would be enlightening. IMHO

That may prove to be the crux of the issue. Genesis Finance as a subsidiary of Hyundai Capital America possibly is the one imposing these registration /titling guidelines.

I have a leased 2018 Genesis G80 Ultimate through Genesis Finance USA. State Farm shows my vehicle as a 2018 Genesis G80 ("Year: 2018, Make: GENESIS, Model: G80"), and the State of Georgia shows my vehicle as a 2018 Genesis G80 ("2018 GENS G80 BASE PREMI 4S").

So, we have our first report of a discrepancy from state to state when the vehicle is leased or financed through Genesis Finance USA. That opens the reasons up to more speculation. Still would like to hear from more 2017/18 owners/leasees on the status in their particular state.

CT says my Genesis financed Genesis is a Genesis. Model is G80.

I purchased my G80 and financed through Hyundai. My insurance lists my car as a Genesis but it is registered with the state (Illinois) as a Hyundai. The dealer told me there were issues with the Illinois DMV regarding registering the car as a Genesis. Whether this is the reason or not I don't know. All I can say is that it is registered with the state as a Hyundai. Having something screwed up in Illinois does not surprise me. We have some very inefficient and incompetent government in this state.

So maybe the new wrinkle here is whether you financed through Hyundai or through Genesis. When I leased in January 2017 I don’t think that Genesis Finance existed. They have a much nicer webpage than Hyundai. https://www.genesisfinanceusa.com/

So we might test the theory that
1, If is is leased or financed through Hyundai it will be registered as a Hyundai
2, If it is leased or financed through Genesis it will be registered as a Genesis
3. If it is leased or financed through a third party it will be registered as a Genesis
4. If it was originally leased or financed through one of the above and then bought out or refinanced through a third party the way it was originally titled will not change

If there is someone from Illinois and has leased for financed from Genesis Finance it would be great to hear how your car is titled.

Please go back and read my previous post showing all my documentation.
My vehicle is leased through Genesis Finance and is "registered" in SC as a Hyundai.
