  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Illinois says my Genesis is a Hyundai

Just look at the Obamacare implementation. I can assure you that is not unique, especially when a government agency is involved. Back in the 1990's I saw close up how a $100 million software development project by American Airlines completely crash and burn (that was in 1995 dollars).

Funny and hate to say this but I was involved in Obamacare as well but in this case going in and fixing the issue not the ones that created it. ;)

can anyone guess when hyundai or genesis will have this situation figured out? do 2019's also have this problem?

Anybody's guess at this time. Not seen anything in the automotive news sites to update where or when this will be resolved. Hard to say if this will be a problem for the 2019's until they resolve the dealership situation.

My registration and dealer paperwork says my 2018 G80 Sport is a Hyundai. It should come as no surprise considering the VIN number tag insider the driver say manufactured by Hyundai Motor Company. Do Lexus state Toyota in thiers?

Registered on Genesis finance site for payments, not Hyundai.

What state?
"Do Lexus state Toyota in thiers?" Unknown. Maybe someone with a Lexus can shed some light.

My neighbor's Lexus ES350 states "Toyota Motor Corporation" on the door VIN plate, so I'd hazard a guess that the VIN plate's text is not the issue as to why some vehicles are showing up as "Hyundai" while others, mine included, are showing up as "Genesis" for the brand.

The issue is not "Toyota Motor Corporation" or "Hyundai Motor Company." Lexus is owned by Toyota Motor Corporation and Genesis is owned by Hyundai Motor Company, so the sticker is correct.

But I am pretty sure that all Lexus vehicles in the USA are registered as a Lexus, not as a Toyota (and have been since they started the Lexus brand in 1989 in the USA). The same vehicles sold as a Lexus in USA from 1989-2004, where sold as a Toyota in Japan. Branding is not always the same worldwide.

That is not the problem. See my post above.

Mark, I agree with you it being not the problem. There is no plausable reason why our new 2017 or 2017 Genesis vehicles are listed as Hyundais.

Class action suit?

The reasons have been discussed at great length on this forum for the last couple of months. The various theories are documented in this thread, but you have to read every post.

Oh, for the love of God. Stop.
Maybe that seems farfetched, but Genesis Motors was created as a separate prestige brand to distinguish itself from Hyundai, so I personally think such a lawsuit has some merit.

Pretty litigious. Knock yourself out.

Pretty litigious. Go ahead know yourself out. I have never seen so many call for Class Action as if it was the panacea for all problems.

My opinion had to do whether there was merit to such a class action suit, not whether I would start one, or join one.

I personally think there is merit. There are members of this forum who own a G80 or G90 who look down on Hyundai Genesis owners (first or second generation), and get upset when non G80 and/or G90 owners post in threads in the G80 or G90 section of this forum. That is true even though the 2016 Hyundai Genesis is virtually identical to the 2017 Genesis G80. So it seems the Genesis Motors brand matters a lot to some people.

Class action lawsuits are only very rarely initiated by the actual plaintiffs, they are usually initiated by lawyers who are looking for a big contingency fee (usually about 30% of the settlement). So the actual plaintiffs rarely have to do anything in class action suits.

I don't own a G80 or G90. But if I did own one that registered as a Hyundai, and was asked to join a class action suit that required no money on my part, and very little time (only proof that I owned such a car), I don't see why I should refuse to join such a suit.

And what harm has been caused to the consumer? How is the car being called

What are the merits of the case though? Your ego is bruised because the car was registered as a Hyundai and not a Genesis? Generally hurt feelings are not enough basis for a law suit. Although the US is overly litigious.

I nonchalantly tossed out the class action comment when responding to an earlier post. It seemed plausible at the time and after reading comments following the post, even more so now. Let me preface by saying I am not a fan of our litigious society. However, this may be the perfect storm.

Many of us purchased a Genesis G80 or G90 in a designated area at a Hyundai dealer possibly with financing through Genesis Finance. We bought a car based upon superior amenities and service; some would say prestige. Unlike the Hyundai Genesis models prior, these automobiles have no Hyundai badges only Genesis and their sub model. We didn’t buy a Santa Fe through Santa Fe Financing.

Only when signing the bill of sale and reviewing the registration was it noted it’s a Hyundai in the eye of the state, by the automaker and insurance provider. If you search for cars on auto trader or cars.com, you will find manufacturer and submodel under Genesis since 2017. Same goes when you’re looking for accessories from aftermarket manufacturers. Were led to believe Genesis motors is a standalone car company. Genesis motors website isn't affiliated with Hyundai’s.

This class action suit by definition is Fraudulent Misrepresentation. The damages are car values suffering when selling or trading in because it’s not identified as a Genesis but rather a Hyundai.

Buying a car is about 90% ego and prestige for quite a few luxury car owners. Brand names are very important. That's why most owners of the 2009-2016 Hyundai Genesis Sedan removed the flying H and replaced it with Genesis wings (the wings came from the Korean Genesis where it comes without any Hyundai badging). Some people even paid hundreds of dollars to replace their Hyundai airbag with the Korean version that had wings instead of the flying H.

How many 2017-18 G80 owners would be OK if their wings were replaced with the flying H that came on the almost identical 2016 Hyundai Genesis Sedan?

Does a Rolex watch keep better time than Seiko quartz watch? No, it does not.
