I wired my previous Ioniq 5 with a dual channel Thinkware u1000 front/.rear cam system with optional radar sensor. To avoid any 12V power drainage issue it was directly powered by a lithium Celllink neo battery bank situated in the glove box that recharged itself via a fuse block tap only while the ignition was on. The radar sensor option was able to detect outside vehicle movement and initiate recording before typical dash cam parking modes. It would start to capture video before an actual event trigger. Most cameras otherwise only start recording a few seconds after an inertial event trigger. Its a good quality camera but was a relatively pricey solution. Nonetheless the big deal was that it was impossible for the dashcam to drain the car's 12V battery plus you had the capacity of several days of parking mode recording again with no effect on the car's 12V system.Has anyone successfully hard-wired a front/rear dash cam? Curious on what the process was like and if any trims had to be completely removed or airbags avoided
Further to your question, most of the wiring is pretty strait forward. I found using an electrician's fish tape tool very helpful to run wire under the cramped dash and along headliner edge between B and C pillars with minimal trim removal, you can usually avoid the curtain airbags without too much difficulty. The fish tape was also helpful funneling the rear camera wiring through the grommeted rubber sleeve wire protector between rear car body and hatch. Its a pretty tight fit through this sleeve a silicon lubricant on your wiring might be helpful as you pull it through the sleeve with the fish tape. In the rear hatch you will probably want dismantle the plastic trim to get a clean install. Invest in some cheap plastic trim removal tools from amazon if your want to avoid scratching up your trim. As far as where to mount the rear camera on the GV60. I initially thought mounting it in the sliver of center glass below the rear spoiler looked perfect but have since appreciated that area gets a lot of dirt and splash back from the rear wheels. Probably the center top hatch glass is the most effective if somewhat visually intrusive.
Overall the camera wiring for the GV60 is fairly similar to the i5, but it looks a little more challenging to find a place for the Cellink battery. I initially considered the glovebox again but because it slides there may be more stress on the wiring that acceptable. Not to mention the process to remove the glove box to route the wiring in the GV is a bit troublesome. You pretty much have to remove the entire lower part of the dash fascia before you can access the retaining bar of the glove box itself before it can be removed. I am now thinking about mounting the lithium battery either in the front floor cubby below the data USB/12V connector or in the forward portion storage space under the armrest console. Either way there is going to be some interior trim, carpet disassembly required and what would normally take a hour or two install is going to be more like a half day event. I will probably leave it until I have some nicer temperature to work with next year.
