  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I have an 11 4.6 with about 105k, recently started to hear what sounds like a scrubbing sound coming from the rear of the drivetrain. It is intermittent sound with no rhythm, but I only seem to hear it between 35-45 mph. It is just a scrubbing sound that is not constant, but come and goes, NO vibration. I jacked up the rear of the car, pulled the wheels off, checked the brakes, bearings for movement, suspension components, couldn't find anything obvious there. I did find that the rear rubber driveshaft dampener was tearing around several of the bolt holes. Not sure if this is the cause, anyone had any experiences with this? I have an aftermarket extended warranty that covers the driveshaft's, so i will likely take it to the dealer and let them replace the driveshaft part. shaft.webp

The drive shaft flex connector needs to be replaced before it rips and causes damage. Also the scrubbing could be emergency brakes. Did you check the center driveshaft carrier bearing?

Thanks for the reply. I did not check the carrier bearing as I believe it is located above the heat shielding for the exhaust and not easily accessible, at least that's the way it appeared. I am a DIY'er, but since I have the warranty, I will have the dealer take a look when they replace the driveshaft dampener. If the dampener was $50 or so, I would replace it myself, but it looks like it is $160+ for the correct one (not the Dorman one from AutoZone that I have read does not fit the sedans as they advertise it does) I will take a look at the emergency brake as well when I get a chance. thanks

My carrier bearing had to be replaced at about 60k miles as I recall. The early 2011 V8 had a small vibration between 20 and 30 mph which was a the center carrier bearing which was replaced by a beefed up one. You could feel the vibration in the center armrest. Not a big deal and only problem I had until car had over 210,000 miles on it. Steering wheel limit switch was replaced per a TSB but did not cause us a problem. Transmission service on the ZF is important if you are going keep the car and put 200k or more on it. Note the transmission has a pan/filter that needs to be replaced when serviced. Some techs don't know about the pan/filter and claim the transmission has no filter, LOL. Don't forget about the fuel tank air filter and fuel filter, change.

Would you happen to know what the part number for the carrier bearing is? Hyundai will only sell you a whole driveshaft and I don't want to spend that kind of money just to replace the bearing. Also I replaced the flex disc/rear driveshaft coupler, the correct part number for my 2009 is 935-107. $105 on Amazon.

Just an update: I finally took my car to the dealer the other day. They are replacing the entire propeller shaft ( I call it a driveshaft) which is sold as an assembly with the rear rubber dampener and the carrier bearing. List for just over $1000. My warranty is covering it, just paying my $100 deductible. Hopefully this will fix the "scrubbing" sound from the rear.

Update: Dealer replaced the driveshaft (propeller shaft), took 30-days to get the part as it was backordered. Price on invoice was $1412 for the part, and $200 labor to install. Drove it off the lot and still have the same noise, this did not fix it. I am now thinking it may be something in the rear differential. Will have to schedule another appointment with the dealer.

I’m having the same issue. Was there any resolve?
