If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. I am new to this forum. I have been following and reading a lot of different discussions about the 2018 G80 and G80 sport.

I currently own a 4 cylinder car and I had been looking for an affordable luxury car with a V6 engine. After doing some research, I initially settled on the Kia Cadenza given its price and standard features offered. However, I was not wowed by the car (I ended up not test driving it).

I did more research and stumbled upon the Genesis brand. The G80 sport's styling, its engine specs, interior finish, and those rims drew me to the Genesis brand. For curiosity sake, I reached out to a dealer who had one in stock. The G80 sport's MSRP was higher than its competitors such as the 2018 Acura TLX A-spec AWD, the 2017 Lexus GS 350 AWD F sport, and the 2017 E300 sport 4Matic.

Here is my question (please do not knock the newbie): Is the G80 sport overpriced?

You do get a good bang for your buck. A comparably priced competitor (apart from the Acura) would be priced at least $10k more.

I am looking for a healthy discussion. On a side note, what do you think of the upcoming G70? I came across some spy photos posted online. I cannot wait to see this car in person and test drive it.

*If the G70 sport gets the same 3.3L 365 hp twin turbo engine as the G80, it will be much quicker. We could be talking sub 5 sec to reach 60 mph.

Seems like you answered the question yourself. It's more car for the money than the competitors. You have to keep in mind the G80 sport comes standard with many features that you have to pay for with other brands. Also you get a longer warranty if you buy rather than lease.

IMO Acura hasn't been relevant as a luxury brand ever since the economic recession and their pivot towards Honda. The G80 sport probably competes most directly with the GS F-sport, as most of the conquest buyers are from Lexus and they share the same philosophy of luxury comfort over sportiness. I don't think many MB shoppers will cross shop the E300 sport with the G80 sport - the badge is too important for most of these people.

The G70 will be a competitor to the S4/340i and is rumored to have a 0-62 mph of 4.7 seconds. The leaked interior looks pretty much like an audi, which is a good brand to copy if you have to copy someone.

In my opinion the non sport model is a better buy than the sports model. The standard model has more power than most cars in that class. You need to understand that the cost of ownership is not just what you pay but also the resale value of the car. Genesis has a poor resale value. I would think that the overall cost would be lower with an Audi A6 or BMW 5 series.

All options are included on G80 Sport, where you must pay at least $10k on other prestige cars to be equal.
Some buyers I think are willing to pay extra for their car badge to say BMW or MB. I'm not one of them.

As mentioned the sport is not overpriced relative to the competition and the content in the car.

However, my experience has been the dealers at least up to now are not dealing much on them. I'm not sure if Hyundai got burned in the past discounting so much off msrp so they are trying to stop that or what, but the dealer I test drove a sport at didn't even try to talk numbers. In fact it was the first time in my 30+ years of car buying where a dealer didn't really try to sell the car--it was a very odd experience. If they continue to have a take-it-or-leave it attitude on the car I predict they will be sitting on lots for a long time.

Acura TLX is in a class lower with it's size and power. E300 with an equivalent engine to the Genesis is around $74k.

But why would you compare 2017 pricing on those models to the Genesis 2018 pricing ??

One dealer quoted me a sale price of $53,742 on a 2018 Casablanca white G80 Sport with an MSRP of $58,940. This price was before any incentives. I did let him know I was waiting for the release of the G70. He was understanding and not pushy at all.

The price difference (based off MSRP) between a 2017 and 2018 base Genesis G80 is about $350. To my knowledge, the 2018 E class and 5 series have yet to be announced. However, I am sure their pricing, compared to the current model, will not differ by much.

The new BMW 540 is about $76,000 when optioned up to the level of the G80 Sport. Over the last 12 months I've rented a BMW 328, 535 and a Cadillac XTS, spent about a week with each of them. Did a long Test drive in a G80 Sport, In my opinion it's the better car, by far.

The E-Class with the turbo V6 and similar options will probably be close to 80k. Exactly....... BOTH the BMW AND the Mercedes no matter how you cut it..... with similar options they are going to be around $20k difference.
Surprised by your review of the 535. How did it fall short in your opinion. The 535 hauls ass and most of them are pretty damn good handling....... no ??

Has anyone owned/driven the Infiniti Q70 awd with sports package? I am curious to know how it compares to the G80.

I am curious to know why you think it is better car? Does it handle better? Are the seats more comfortable? Any feedback would be appreciated.

The 535 had zero, and I mean zero steering feel, very light at low speeds and would stiffen up at speed, but no feed back through the wheel to the driver. The stiff steering at speed is just a gimmick to make you think "sporty". The G8O has actual steering feel, it's no 911, but I knew what the front end was doing with out really thinking about it. 535 leaned more during hard cornering, felt every millimeter of it's size and weight. Yes it's damn quick in a straight line. G80 Sport felt damn quick to me also. G80 is the better handling car,(IMO) didn't feel like a 4600 pound, 196 inch car to me. I thought the ride/handling balance Genesis has struck with the G80 Sport is quite good for my use as I live in Seattle area where the roads and interstate can get rough. Didn't like BMW I Drive, Did like G80 Sport infotainment, AC in BMW was weak, vents in dash too small (BMW rental was in Phoenix AZ about 100F) AC in G80 was one of the best, maybe the best I've ever seen, it was so cold my arm started to ache where the vent was blowing, had to turn it down twice! I was surprised how much I liked the G80 Sport as I had read the Car and Driver first drive report before my test drive. Sometimes I wonder about those guys! Think Motor trend first drive was closer to my experience. Disclaimer: 535 was a rental so no idea which suspension it had.

That's a good detailed review. The cars are cool but what it sounds like is that these days BMW forces you to order "packages" to basically fix the car to handle half way to how the E39 handled which DID NOT require you to "fix" it with "packages".

I appreciate your feedback. I am not one of those guys who will pay extra for a Beamer or a Benz.

The lower depreciation of Lexus could offset the 10K. But the total cost of ownership is TOTALLY different. Combining warranty+service+maintenance you would see a scary picture.

Huge difference in steering design. Genesis uses EPAS and BMW now uses EPS.

I had a 2012 535i with the sport package and the car handling was phenomenal. Sold it because it had no safety features that I wanted. Tried a 2017 BMW 540 and noticed that the handling was not as good. In fact the Audi A6 had better handling. Finally bought a G80 which handled well and was the best value in terms of standard features. In general German cars are overpriced, under equipped and overly expensive to maintain.

So the verdict is in... the G80 sports is not overpriced.

Thank you all for all the comments and feedback.
