Is the Genesis ok?

I'm deciding what to get when my bmw 535i lease runs out.

It's always dangerous reading these sorts of forums since one focuses on the problems rather than hearing about the satisfied owners.

I just went through the "have any problems with your Genesis" and it was pretty disturbing. The number of folks with no or few problems wasn't as large as I'd like to see. I'm particularly concerned about the sound system in the tech package... is there anyone for whom this works properly?

In general, tell me that the posts in that thread aren't the norm... is this a well built, reliable car?

My Genesis 4.6 Tech pkg sound is spectacular. No issues at all... but it is way to powerful for me to listen to (I am even 1/2 deaf), past the 1/3 marker!

I have owned my Genesis for a week, so I can't give you any personal recommendations on reliability yet, but I will make a couple of comments.

The Genesis was a completely new car in 2009. I can certainly understand that there may have been a few problems with it. I was in Software Development and we always said never take any software release ending in 1 or A - Because there are bugs. I never buy a car in the first year of a complete model re-design also. Some people like this experience. That is fine. I let them help Hyundai or Lexus or Honda 'Perfect' the model. That is also why I was pleased that the Genesis for 2011, did not have any changes, except the 'Bug' fixes.

I was chided a bit for waiting for the 2011 Genesis, but I did this mostly to let the problems 'come to the surface' and get remedied before I bought one. I was actually told on this forum 'that I was waiting, because I could not afford one'. What I could not afford was the time spent at the dealership getting my problems resolved. I do not want to be a 'Beta Tester' of any product. Some people like to be first, but they may spend a lot of time perfecting that product.

I feel that a Lot of the Genesis problems have surfaced now and I felt comfortable buying one last week. time will tell.

I tend to agree with cut-throat about waiting for the bugs to be worked out. I am looking to buy this fall and was initially disappointed that the 2011 had only minor changes and not the anticipated 8 speed transmission. Now I think I will probably be better off with a tried and true model. Don't think I want to wait for the 2012 even if it comes out in early 2011. The only downside would be resale/trade in value if the 2012 really eclipses the 2011, but for me it's a good trade off.

Brought my 2010 in to have it road force balanced and my service manager (he treats me like royalty) gives me a brand new 2011 Genesis to drive around. I would like to state that I think it takes at least 2 years to get the bugs out as this car seems more refined than mine. It shifts more smoothly, and the engine just purrs at idle. Actually, I can not feel the engine--amazing. If I had to do it over again, I would have waited for a 2011. Based on my experience, I feel this is the year to get a new Genesis. I would not get a 2012 (available in spring 2011) but would probably wait until the 2014 model is available with the bugs worked out. Saw the same thing happen with the Lexus ES350. Seemed like they got the bugs out for 2009, but the bugs were there in 2007-2008. Traded my '08 Es350 in on the Genny.

Hyundai's build/manufacturing process continually makes improvements along the build cycle- not just after model year.

If I waited until 2011 to get my Genesis "bug free" (I haven't had any), then very shortly the new facelift 2012 model would date the model I waited so long to have. Nothing ages a car then a new model year freshening of overhaul.

Exactly my dilemma. A 2011 is possibly more bug free (and I get it sooner), while an early 2011 release of an overhauled 2012 model year hurts the resale value of the 2011. I will probably err on the side of getting the 2011 for 2 reasons; getting the car a bit sooner and I tend to keep my cars for a while so resale/trade in is less of an issue (assuming I love the car). Also "aging" by a new model year is less important if you really like what you are buying. Wonder if prices will creep up for the 2012 as well. Hope I don't have to eat my words.
