If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

3.3T Jerky auto transmission (hard downshifts while braking)

I recently drove 4 different 2018 - 2019 G80 3.3t while shopping for a used one. All 4 had varying levels of 3-2 and 2-1 downshift firmness, from barely noticeable to very noticeable. The one that I ended up buying has a very noticeable downshift and I like the sportiness of it but my wife complains about it. Does it in all 3 drive modes (Eco, Normal, and Sport). I’m going to try resetting the adaptive values with my Launch x431.

Edit: I reset the adaptive values, and downshifts when stopping are as smooth as silk now. Amazing what you learn on these forums.

Do you have the link to that, or the procedure (if it's quick)? Just in case I ever need it. Now that it's fresh in your head:). Thanks.

First you need a diagnostic computer capable of coding, such as a Launch or Autel. Then it’s just a matter of navigating to the system list on the diagnostic computer, selecting Transmission Control Unit, then select whether you have a shift-by-wire (SBW) or shift-by-cable (SBC) transmission (Google “Genesis SBW transmission” for description of these), then select Reset Adaptation Values. The computer will churn for about 5 seconds and then say Action Complete, or something like that. Then just drive.

Oh, thank you. I have a iCarsoft scanner with Hyundai software, but there's no Genesis, and I believe it only works up to the '19 model year, and mine is '23. I might give it a try one of these days, but I'm happy how my car shifts, so no need for that now. Thanks again.

Thank you. So it should work? Need to try both the '22 Santa Fe Calligraphy and '23 G70 to see if they work on basic OBD-II functions, but doubt it'd work with service functions. Worth trying though. One of these days. Ha ha.

My 2019 G70 is downshifting hard at low speeds. It's driving my wife (the primary driver) nuts. Do the 22-23 models have the same issue?

My '23 doesn't downshift 'hard', but yes, I can definitely feel downshifts into low gears. Not annoying to me, but not refined either. I almost always downshift with the paddles at about 2.5 to 3K rpm, since the tranny downshifts pretty low by itself, even in sport mode. Not a big deal to me at all, but our transmission is no German ZF; that's for sure. Ha ha. But I like how positive and quickly it shifts. It actually shifts quicker than the DCT on my Santa Fe Calligraphy.

I’m having an issue with my transmission, started to notice it since the car had about 20000 km on the clock (car now has 52000 km)

the car doesn’t smoothly downshifts during normal soft braking or in stop and go traffic or at a traffic light
The downshifts are very noticeable and that makes the braking experience unpleasant. Especially when I’m braking very softly, the car brakes very soft (brakes) then it suddenly brakes harder (transmission) then brakes softly again (brakes) then harder again (transmission).
this isn’t something that I’ve experienced in any other car.
the closest other car that does that is my 2018 G80 3.8L but it’s much smoother.

recently I’m experiencing jerky downshifts more often (the downshifts are harder and with a slight noise, sometimes louder) .. I’m not having fun with the car anymore

car modifications: Ark GT-F springs, spacers, wider tyres front and rear (20mm) on stock sport rims (245/40/19 front .. 275/35/19 rear)

the shift points are a little bit different (says other G70 and stinger owners who test drove my car) but this could be due to the fact that I’m running fatter tyres >> bit taller side wall
But this one doesn’t really bother me and it’s still very smooth

could someone suggest a fix for these hard downshifts?
the dealer claims he checked it and it’s normal and he also claims he did a software upgrade to the transmission control module .. but that obviously didn’t help
I know if I keep going to the dealer about it he would blame it on the Tyre size

I had this problem even with stock tyres (tyres changed at 40000 km) .. did try to run the stock tyre size now and that didn’t help also >> so maybe the tyres aren’t the problem here (only transmission effect tyre diameter have is on the final drive ratio)

I’m still hopeful this could be solved through software.. any help or advice?

thank you
For me it seems to be normal. I notice it less once the engine oil temp is up to operating temp. I know the engine oil has nothing to do with the transmission. But when the power train isn’t up to temp I have the exact thing happening and is worse when not up to regular temp. My friend has the exact same spec as me 3.3T sport and noticed this. I believe it is normal. We have also had a customer bring his G70 into our shop with this complaint. Unless the car is set to eco or custom this happens When the torque converter is engaged, In eco and custom the torque converter will unlock at certain speeds and let you coast freely. Other wise this seems to be normal for us. I agree the my other cars don’t experience this issue and I notice it less when everything is warmed up. The dealer has stated it’s normal. Hope this helps

I just got a brand new 2023 G70 3.3t and I noticed this the day after I bought it. Car only has 200 miles on it. It’s a lot more noticeable in sport and sport+ mode but it definitely still does it in comfort mode. It does seem to get a little bit better (less noticeable) after the car has warmed up for a while. However it is still very noticeable and it is driving me crazy. I drive an hour to work everyday and can still very much feel it when my drive is done. I read some replies that say that it goes away once the car is warmed up but that is not the case for me as i’ve explained. Is my only option taking it for service and asking them to do the adaptive reset? Thanks for the help in advance.

I'm wondering why Genesis didn't catch this. Did they not put tens of thousands of miles on their test cars, which I'd assume have the same transmission programming and transmission that we do? How is it possible nobody noticed this before the car hit production?

I've had my car for 57,000 miles. It did this at 12500. It's still doing it at 69500 miles.

A friend of mine once worked for Ford doing engine controller programming, specifically the diagnostics so the following was not his bug...

He said they were not allowed to drive the test cars off of the Ford grounds. Of course, they did from time to time anyway. This was in the 80s, I think. One Friday, a group of engineers drove a test Crown Vic to the bank and waited in the drive through teller line. By the time they got nearly to the teller, they could smell smoke and the floor of the car was getting hot. They hopped out and looked under it to see the catalytic converters glowing red. There was a routine in the computer that said anything you put the car in park, to add some fresh air to the converters to burn off stuff and keep them clean. They had not thought about people in line moving up a few feet and then putting it in park several times in a short period. They had to add some code that said don't add air again if it just did it less than ten minutes ago.

Complain. Let them try to fix it couple times. If you don’t like this downshifting - try lemoning it? Ask for new car?

Coming from manuals all my life, I actually like how the tranny feels. And yes, I drive in sport mode all the time, and actually use the paddles most of the time as well, since sport is not sport enough (still lugs the engine) IMO (and sport+ is too much for the streets). I also like it actually shifts at least as quick as the DCT on my '22 SF Calligraphy, both up and down. I don't want the car to feel like a minivan, but to each his own, I guess:).

I was also able to reset the TCU adaptive values with an iCarsoft CR Max and the result was a little different than when I reset with the Launch X431. It may just be my imagination but it feels like the Icarsoft actually restored a little bit of firmness to both the upshifts and downshifts, but not nearly like it was before any resets. I like it.

This is good news as the Icarsoft CR Max is a lot cheaper than the Launch…they can be found for less than $400.

Hey, that's great news... but you left out what year is your G70. So what is it? Hopefully newer than 2020. I have the CR PRO; do you know what's the difference with CR MAX? Mine is for multiple brands, and used it for a 2018 Porsche Macan Sport Edition 2.0T, to code a new battery, and reset the maintenance warning, and it worked perfectly. I also downloaded the Hyundai programs (no Genesis, but it should be the same), but haven't tried it on neither the '22 SF Calligraphy nor the '23 G70 2.0T SP. I really like how mine shifts, so not going to mess with that now. Ha ha. But hopefully it works on my '23, since it's basically the same darn thing as the 2019 mechanically (it came out in 2019, right?). Thank you.

It’s a 2019 G80 3.3t.
I’m not sure the difference between the Icarsoft CR Max and CR Pro…maybe just the touchscreen.
Easiest way to see if it will work is to hook it up to your car and see if the TCU/Resetting Auto T/A Values feature is there.

Hi guys (maybe gals too).

Kia Stinger 3.3T MY19 driver here.

This thread was helpful for me, so thought I would chime in to assist other future readers.

My ride did this behaviour also (i.e. harsher and noticeable downshift, mostly from 3>2 when coasting to or soft breaking to slow or stop, particularly when cold). I reported this at 38000km, dealer reset = all ok until about 42500km then dealer denied me (wtf!) so I asked them "nicely" to just do the reset again = all good again .... smooth shifts all round.

So I found myself looking for a cost effective method to do this myself. I had a couple of very basic OBD2 readers/resetters so knew a little bit about these devices. Did a bit more digging, found this thread then came to have found this little device --- THINKDIAG --- which has the feature allowing you to do the adaptive transmission values reset for a Kia Stinger (as described a few comments above). They (mythinkcar support) actually recommended me there Thinkdiag 2 (a newer version) but I had found that the Thinkdiag (version 1) did it for me .... at cost less the $100 too !!! It is very inexpensive device and might be worth a shot for you G drivers too.

It is a hell annoying kia/hyundai/genesis transmission "feature" they gave us ... so if you can do this reset yourself then you'll save some time and frustrations, to just get on with some "smoother" driving.

All the best.

This is awesome. Thanks for this. I had given up on looking for a cheaper tool to do this.

This makes me wonder if bluedriver would also work as it's at a similar price point.

Question, were you able to successfully do the reset with the thinkdiag 1? The product description says it costs 50 dollars or something per reset request...
