  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hello there,

I'm turning in my leased lexus IS here in a couple months. I'm looking for another luxury sedan used to buy. I've researched used IS's, 335i's, you name it I've looked them up. I forgot all about the genesis and have been really looking into the 2012 5.0 R spec.

My questions I have that I have had a hard time finding out myself are the common issues. Yes I want luxury sport but I also want reliability with it as well, being that it will by my daily driver. What are common things go wrong? Anything major? How are the trans and overall drivetrain in these cars.

Also do they make a decent amount of boltons for this car i.e. CAI and exhaust? How about the suspension. I plan on lowering it atleast 1-2 inches.

Thanks for your time guys

The only advice I really have is to avoid the first year (2012) cars. The 2012's are the first year of the 5.0 and some have oil consumption issues which aren't seen in later years. Beyond that they are great cars, wicked quick for their size and incredibly comfortable to drive. With regard to aftermarket there are exhaust, test pipe, body, brake, cold air intake and suspension options among others. ECU tunes have just been released for the 4.6 and 3.8 cars with the 5.0 hopefully getting cracked soon.

If you want reliability avoid the 2012 RSpec.

The only major problem the '12's have had are the oil usage issue (bad rings) which should not be any problem if you pick a car with a VIN past the problem date (see oil usage thread in this forum for lots of info).

My '12 R-spec has been virtually trouble free with 2 exceptions (neither one a serious or immediate problem):

The car came delivered with an outdated nav map which was updated under warranty by the dealer. The turn signal stalk was replace after some bad contacts shorted out the headlights in a turn.

You might want to do further research on the pipes as some are reporting that it sets up a loud hum which can get very old after a while. Also, the suspension on the R-spec is fairly hard as delivered so lowering it further may result in a very uncomfortable ride.

And just as a comparison.....my cousin has a 2012 V-6 Genny which is actually a bit more responsive around town. If most of your driving is city I would recommend you take a drive in one of those before opting for the R-spec. It is also a very capable straight line performer. You can get the V-6 with the same trim as the R-spec but it is quite a bit less expensive.

Not necessary to avoid the whole year. Rings were only a problem up to a certain build date.

Thanks for the quick responses. I'll take a look at the v6 R Specs as well and i'll definitely take a look at the oil usage thread. Anyone have any official 1/4 time slips on these cars?

Also how easy is it to work on these cars like installing suspension and exhaust.

Thanks again

The V6 wont be an RSPEC. The 5.0's run a low 13 quarter (13.3 or so stock).

It's possible that the OP is confused about the Genesis Sedan R-Spec (5.0), and the Genesis Coupe R-Spec (3.8).

As most people know, the Coupe and Sedan have nothing to do with each other, and it was a gigantic mistake by Hyundai to give the Coupe the Genesis name. The 2017 coupe will not be part of the new Genesis brand.

The chassis between the coupe and sedan are quite similar from what I recall. A lot of parts also swap over between the two. The two are quite different end products however with the sedan being way more refined, more expensive and less sporting in stock form (I had a 2011 Genesis Coupe).

The coupe is built on a shortened version of the sedan platform. This is well understood.

It's my intention to get the sedan, therefore the 5.0 r spec. I want a V8 lol ;). I guess as far as the oil consumption, I guess it would be just safer to get a 2013.

2013 would be a safer bet unless you're comfortable looking at 2012's with later production dates (listed in the door jam). I don't think I've heard of any oil consumption issues with 2013+ so that's the route I would go.

The 2012's 4.6 does not have oil consumption issues. And the ride is softer.
