  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I just had a tire positively shred on my 2018 G80 sport on the interstate, with no road hazard involved. Less than 2,000 miles on the car/tires, and the inside seems to be filled with sticky goop which the roadside service person suggested was fix-a-flat -- I've not even put air in yet.

Dealer is saying they can't pay for the tire and have no idea how it's filled with fix-a-flat.

Hyundai USA is saying they have no idea it'd be filled with goop, and that maybe Continental Tire will cover it under warranty

Continental tire is saying they only honor warranty claims from retailers and that the dealer would need to make the claim.

Frustrating.

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
Looks to me like your rim may be ruined also.

Hyundai Motor America and their dealers (Hyundai and Genesis) are a bunch of liars.

I would suggest the tire had a problem at the port and instead of replacing it, they used a fix a flat to get it on its way.

This would be obvious to a blind man a factory defect,2018 with less than 2k I would be demanding a new tire and wheel plus checking the front end alignment!!
$50+K for a new car and they quibble on this, it would be my last vehicle from Genesis!!!

Yea that is embarrassing, especially for a company that is launching into a luxury brand and touting a very special ownership experience. Hope they take care of you.

How long did you drive on it after the tire pressure signal went off on the dash???

It all went down super fast. Was driving 70 in the left lane on the interstate and it started thumping like driving on seamed pavement. I got over two lanes as quickly as was safe and was fortunate there was an exit right there. Total distance driven from "all's well" to "WTF?!" was a few miles at most.

Because the car leaves for the dealer tomorrow and I wanted some of the "goop" inside I reached in and pulled out a handful. It's full of white foam rubber covered in black sticky rubber-smelling (not asphalt/tar) gookus. More pics in the album.

When you drive on a tire that has a complete blowout (loses all air), and the rim hits the ground, often times the rim gets damaged and has to be replaced. In some cases the rim may look OK, but will leak air even with a new tire, and may be hard to balance. This is sometimes unavoidable, but it is costly.

The OEM tires have "silent" technology. Basically the inside of the tire has foam lined on the back of the tread. The concept it absorbs road noise. That is the white foam you are seeing. It likely melted due to the heat that running it flat caused.

@cdccjohnson is spot on. The foam is the http://www.continental-tires.com/car/technology/contisilent foam lining and the black goop is the adhesive the holds it in place which remains tacky and flexible at room temperature. The rim is/was fine (in the picture it looks out of round because it's partially obscured) and is holding air. The dealer charged me the cost of a replacement tire. Their valet dropped of a loaner G80 at my home yesterday morning and brought my repaired car to my office yesterday afternoon. Continental says there's no evidence it was a factory defect and won't cover it under warranty. Genesis USA is refunding what I paid the dealer to make up for my frustrating experience, so I'm $0 out of pocket.

I'm still amazed everything can go from fine to "WTF" w/ a shredded tire in two minutes and a few miles at only 70mph, but all in all color me very satisfied.
