Knocking/clicking noise from engine

Yes...sorry I forgot to update.

Passenger seat rattles once in a while, but dealer tested other Genesis sedans and they concluded that the sedans they tested also have a passenger seat shake/rattle and is "normal".

They fixed the heated/cooled seat and I guess the ammonia smell was actually the electronics in the seat starting to fail.

Rear HVAC they said is operating as normal and they used a temp sensor and reached over 80 degrees in the rear seat I guess.

The engine never did make any clicking noise while at the dealer so there was nothing they could do. The last few times I've driven the car the engine has been perfectly quiet, so I will probably have another oil analysis done to see how things are going with the engine. Last analysis (which I have a thread on) results were good at 19,000 miles. I'm at 33,700 now and I will have the analysis done in the next few days since I probably will put the Genesis away for the winter in a few weeks. Got the winter tires on my Sonata yesterday.....................

Once I receive the results of the 2nd analysis I will post them. If this info seems confusing, my apologies as I'm feeling a little loopy from this cold medication I took.

FYI I have over 75,000 miles on my 2011 4.6 tech and the car has been near perfect. The Tau 4.6 is a great engine.

Thanks for the update Scott...I appreciate it.

Quick story...my engine has been making a funny noise since my last oil change.
It makes a clacking noise when cold started...sorry for the description...I don't know how to describe it.

Anyways, I meet a friend of a friend who is a mechanic for Ferrari. HE worked for BMW for many years and Ferrari went and get him cause he's VERY GOOD!

Long story short...I told him about the noise and since I was due for a oil change, I asked him to do it...
NOTE: I have had my oil changes at every 5000KM since I've purchased the car. This is the first time I have gone over 5000KM on an oil change. It was just a little over 6000KM and am now at 101,000KM on the odometer.

HE took the car to his place for the oil change and said he'd take a quick look at the noise.
He also strongly urged me to put synthetic oil and I said OK. (what do I know right?)

He did the oil change and I went for a drive hours after he brought it back...it was VERY cold today (-10C) and when I test drove it I couldn't believe how quiet my motor is now. IT runs so much smoother it's amazing the difference!
The clacking is completely gone...he wasn't impressed with the oil filter the dealer used! He definitely isn't impressed with the oil they use too.

I called him to discuss and am horrified of the oil stories he told me with dealers...let me just say this...I will NEVER do an oil change again at a dealer. I will ALWAYS buy my own oil and have him change it for me. He's a great contact for me and charges a very reasonable price for ALL is work.

He told me I shouldn't worry about the noise and would be surprised if it comes back...I'm very impressed by the difference and I know my car very well after 3 1/2 years ownership and over 100K on the odometer.

I look forward to putting more miles and see if it remains noise free.

Sorry for the long post.

Sorry didn't give update. I wanted to drive my car for awhile before I did. Took about 2 week for dealer to work on my car. They tear it down and found abnormal wear which was causing noise. I dont remember what exactly but I will look at my receipt tomorrow and post it. Car runs and sounds like new now. No more clicking noise. I just recently which to mobil 1 5-20w. I bought my car used with 19k miles on it so I believe the previous owners did not take care of my baby which may have lead to abnormal wear. The dealer honored my warranty because I complained about it on paper since 42k. So always get your complain or problem on their systems in case your past the 60k bumper to bumper.

OK, so what oil filter did your mechanic use if he didn't like the OEM filter? Every after-market oil filter for the Genesis that I have seen is made by the same company that supplies the OEM filter (although Hyundai did switch suppliers in 2012).

Also would be nice to know exactly what oil (brand and viscosity) he used also (although you did say it was a synthetic).

Thanks for the info - I'm looking forward to you providing the info on your service write-up receipt. I drove my car last night, and the engine certainly was noisy again. I don't understand why this noise is not consistant for me.

I have already pulled more oil and will be mailing my oil sample off to Blackstone today for my 2nd oil analysis. Should have results within a week and I will post results once I receive them.

I'll see what info I can get from him and report back.
The filter he put in was made in Korea vs the filter he removed was not.
That's all I know and remember him saying...sorry

I'll find out.

The OEM filters are made in Korea, so that seems strange (although the newer ones for 2012 from may be made in China, not sure).

My 2011 has this symptom.
.....just got used to it. Doesn't affect it's performance in any way.

Should try mid-grade or premium fuel to rule out (or confirm) detonation.

Ok this is what it said on my Service receipt. "Adjuster ASSY-LASH. Found engine bank 1 exhaust and intake camshaft abnormally worn causing abnormal noise. Replaced engine bank 1 intake and exhaust camshaft assemblies and rollers/hydraulic adjusters due to abnormal wear pattern."

My noise was coming for the Right "Passenger" Side of the engine.
Good Luck!:)

I just spoke with him...
For the oil he used April Hypersyn 5W20 synthetic in my car.
The filter he pulled out of the car was written "MAHLE" on it.

btw drove over 100 miles today and boy is the car running smoothly. no clanking noise whatsoever.

Regards,

April Hypersyn is a Canadian brand. Not sure who actually makes it (possibly ExxonMobil). But it is a good quality synthetic, and not surprised that it reduces engine noise on the Genesis.

The MAHLE filter with the white end-cap is the new one that is used for the 2012 Genesis. I would recommend that if you have a 2011 or older that you use the older style Hyundai OEM filters made by MANN (there are several identical after-market versions also made by MANN).

Thanks for the info - Looks like the only option I have is to take the car directly to the dealer when the engine is actually making the noise. It made the noise last night, but in MN all car dealerships are closed on Sundays. I will probably have to wait until next year (spring) before I take it in since it's getting close to put it away for the winter, and if they needed the car for a couple of weeks, I'm sure with my luck it would finally actually snow here and I would die on the way home with my summer tires.

I'm not familiar with oils and all but will trust what my new friend tells me to do.
I'm probably in good hands with his knowledge. :D

Don't worry it took me over five+ trips to same dealer for them to hear it. then after they hear it they tried to say it was normal. i had to go to another dealer to get another opinion that this is not a normal noise then emailed Hyundai. It was a mission. Good luck my friend.

When you went to a different dealership for a 2nd opinion are you saying that they techs agreed that the noise wasn't normal, and that's when you contacted HMA? This is probably what I will be doing in the future. Once I bring my car in when it's making the noise if my dealership techs say everything is normal, then I will visit another dealer, perhaps the dealer EXBMW uses and go from there.

I sent the email to HMA after I got the second opinion. The second dealership said that noise is not normal and it would cost me 1600 for tear down then another 1k to 2k+ to find and fix the problem and put it back together . So I emailed HMA and got everything on paper and showed my first dealership. I don't know if HMA did anything, all they said was for me to send them what I paid for to see if they can reimburse me . I took my car back to the first dealership and told them another tech did said it was not normal so they finally got a specialist out and to tear down the motor. "Side Note first dealership said they pulled another Genesis next to mine and said both were making the same noise so they concluded it was normal. and they said they had a specialist come out once they heard the noise which I do not believe anyone came out until I got the confirmation from the second dealership"

I am confused. Why would the dealer ask you to pay for something that is covered under the 10 year - 100K mile powertrain warranty?

I don't know. Probably thought it could be something other than the motor?
