  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hello folks. I have a 2016 3.8, and I usually set the LKAS to pre-departure mode.
When the road is relatively, but not totally straight, the LKAS would not work and the car may go out of the lane. Then the steering wheel would vibrate, but won't steer me back to the lane. Does this seem normal to you guys?

Recently I rented a 2019 kia optima. Its LKAS feels way more competent. I felt that the steering wheel was always controlled and making small adjustment even when the road seems straight. Amazing how much it is improved in just a few years.

On a side note, when driving on a long straight line my car seems always go slightly to the right. It is very subtle and I don't feel it driving in the city. The alignment was off before but I got it done only 1000 miles ago. What could be the problem?

It is just the way it is. My previous car was 2018 Sonata Ultimate and LKAS was perfect. When I traded it for my Genny, I noticed that the LKAS on these Genny's is bad. It probably is much better after 2018. I use post-departure 24/7 and it only failed me few times during bad weather condition. If it rains like crazy or snows like crazy, I have to switch it off as it sometimes makes a sudden turn on a straight road and I could easily end up in the ditch if I don't react quickly enough.

I only use it on the Interstate for long drives - that being said, mine works pretty well. Especially if you're a little fatigued. The road has to be well marked or it loses the scent...

So if I understand what you are saying correctly, you 2015 Genesis LKA doesn’t work as well as you 2018 Sonata Can’t say I am surprised, the Sonata had three years to make improvements.

That is correct. It still works but it there is more wandering inside your line and it requires more driver input. Sometimes it tries to pull too close to one line and steering wheel takes more effort to turn it back into the middle of your line.

My 2019 G80 LKA is not what I consider good. It will not even follow a gradual curve. It might bounce off a straight stripe but will drive right over a curve.

I drove a G70 2.0t as my maintenance loaner on Monday and it was a night & day difference. It stayed centered in the lane and followed curves like a pro. Wish my G80 did.

That is very interesting! I thought they would’ve update lka across all models... sad :(

I'm sure the 2021 model will have great LKAS and HDA. The system in the Pallisade and Telluride are so good that some folks in the OpenPilot discord sold their OpenPilot hardware and just stuck with the stock system. They only installed the module that disables the nag to tell you to keep your hands on the wheel. The GV80 has added features like lane change.

My '18 G80 will follow a curve, but not safely. If often puts the tires right on the yellow line. OK if no cars coming but if another Genesis did the same coming at me, we'd both need new headlights. Only reason I even leave it on is in case of a heart attack it may keep me out of a ditch.

I like your approach. I keep mine on for the same reasons. Although I use the post option on so it does not interfere with the steering when I am inside the line.

Unfortunately, car development cycles as they are - gadgets in your "new" car are already several years old before it hits the street...

Many people do not realize that. When a new electronic gadget comes out people want it to work with their two year old car. Like AA and CP in the Ultimate. The head unit design was finalized before CP was invented. I never worked directly with the auto companies but did work with some of their suppliers. Typically, when we came in or a project it was for a model year 3 or 4 years from the showroom.

The Genesis SUV has not hit the showroom yet, but there are people already working on the next generation. We've seen spy shots for a long time. That testing not only gets out some bugs but also leads towards changes and ideas for the new ones.

On my my 2nd ride with LKA. The first on was an '16 Acura RDX. I think my '18 Genesis G80 is better, but LKA are NOT anywhere close to a autopilot. With both vehicles, they are weak in Interstate highways above 60-65 MPH.

That said, I wouldn't buy a car that didn't have this feature along with Adaptive Cruise Control. I find it much more enjoyable setting my speed to a couple of MPH less than the speed limit. I just completed a 3500 mile trip and I only passed a couple of cars the entire trip. Trucks yes, cars no. I've come to the conclusion that 99% of the drivers are all in a hurry.

Not sure, but I seem to remember the Genesis setup for LKA has 2 modes, lazy and more aggressive. One situation you don't want LKA engaged is strong crosswinds. The steering wheels jerks back and forth.

My experience with LKAS so far has been thats it's useless in any of the modes... Granted I am in Quebec, Canada and driving on Ice-covered roads 85% of the time :P

Different strokes for different folks. I totally agree that LKAS is mostly useless for agressive drivers. As is Adaptive Cruise Control if the set speed is high (say 10 MPG over the speed limit). Such a car will rapidly overtake slower cars, resulting in what I consider moderate to hard braking). Even if cars configured this way "camp" in the passing lane, they will still rapidly overtake slower "campers".

And neither one of these enhancements are designed for icy roads, but 85% of the time is a bit of a stretch unless you're referring to the winter months.

Traditional car manufacturers have had their run for a long time . That concept of todays cars having yesterdays features has to go away.

Tesla is disrupting this in a big way.

Just How Far Ahead Is Tesla In Self-Driving?

Overall i think the software cloud will change this . Always connected cars will stream content and even provide data points back to the company .

All this and more , tesla does it today . Others will catch up fast or perish . Will happen in this decade or sooner

Sure as soon as they settle those pesky lawsuits
You can’t treat automotive tech like say mobile phone tech. Bugs in software can cost lives.

What happens to the Tesla when they decide to stop supporting it? They already don't want third party mechanics working on their cars. Are you forced to upgrade your car? Are they just going to brick your car? A traditional car will keep running forever if you're willing to maintain it and you can find thousands of people who can work on it. Tesla recently disabled Autopilot for someone even though the dealership that bought the car from Tesla had already paid for the feature.

As for LKAS, I never liked the way it worked. I feel I was ripped off a little because what sold me on the car was the Empty Convoy video posted by Hyundai. I know that system was modified for the video but I expected it to at least keep the car centered and not bounce between the lane lines. That's why I opted to install Openpilot in my car last year. $1000 add on you can install on many makes and models or a $7000 option from Tesla.

Here's a quick comparison video of Autopilot vs Openpilot. Tesla's system is better but they're not that far ahead and I don't think it's worth the $6000 price difference. I view it the same way I viewed my Genesis... is the E class better? Yes... is it so much better that it's worth the price difference? No...

I'd give that a definite "maybe". Recently I've seen more push back about privacy as we are tracked by Google, watched by Facebook, etc. Do you want the marketing people at Ford or Toyota knowing where you are and what you are doing?
Tesla is a different story. They are still not a mainstream supplier and have a near cult like following. Many of their owners just want to be in the club and connected.
I can see the car of the future tracking you. On a long trip you've been driving now for four hours. The screen pops up and says "you must be getting hungry. Bob's Burgers is at the next exit and we know you like Bob's cheeseburgers"
"Your car is 5 years old and no longer supported. Good luck getting it fixed"
Sometimes old is good.

I know genesis has a definitive plan for Electric. When that happens , are they going to be staring face to face with Tesla or Volvo Electric or Prosche Electric offerings. What happens to Genesis non electric car owners - will they also demand all the software features that the electric genesis will have to offer.

Tesla is just a case study of a software platform . What they have done is provided a car as a software platform where they can keep developing new features and keep improving things on older cars since its just a software patch . For example the recent superbowl ad by Hyundai shows the car can self park with the driver standing outside . I'm not sure if that's available in current Tesla's but if they wanted , its just a bunch of developers adding that software feature .

Have a look at Tesla Software Version 10. What if you could do Karaoke with friends in your car ? Sentry mode ? Full browser in the car ?

You get the difference right ? If the car is connected all the time (almost all Electric cars i know of today are 100% connected) , then its just a matter of constantly improving the software and patching older cars with new features .

When someone in 2015 paid over 50K for the Genesis i drive today - was it acceptable to them that 2015 Genesis had tech that was already obsolete . The LKAS is a gimmick , Ultimate has no support for AA Apple Carplay , CD player (CD's have been long gone) . What is the point of so much real estate for a traditional radio (FM AM Sirrus XM) . All that is digitally streamed now a days . Gear lever ? Thats already changed to a bunch of buttons in the Pallisade , and might even become digital buttons at some point of time .

We are being tracked more than we can imagine (You are being tracked. Deal with it.) . The less we know , the better. The usual toll-booth transponder emits more info than we can imagine.
