  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Let down: The suspension of the 2012 Genesis isn't much improved

I apologize to everyone for this thread.

I was hoping that Hyundai was going to retune the Genesis's suspension to ride better over the broken pavement and rough roads that are increasingly becoming part of the network of highways and byways where I live, as I like the vehicle and the warranty - so much so, that I have been waiting for this for 3 years.

I didn't realize posting experiences and impressions were so frowned upon here.

If I ever post here again, I'll make sure it's only praise of the highest order, on every aspect of the Genesis, whether it's really how I feel, or not.

Thank you.

oh, don't worry about it. most people, myself included, don't mind criticisms about the genesis, as long as they are carefully considered, honest opinions.

so, can you report back after driving the 4.6?

Well, it is kind of strange to come onto a site called "Genesis Owners" after a test drive and tell us why our cars suck.
But that's just me.

There is no need to apologize, although I think some statements, such as quoting a review of R-Spec and using that to justify your impression of the 3.8, were questionable.

Certain people in this thread (you can guess who) are extreme "homers" and seem to have some undisclosed connection with Hyundai, so don't let them harass you. Further, at least one of these people liked the 2009 suspension so much that he upgraded his 2009 to the Equus just a little over 2 years after purchase (the Equus has very cushy air suspension at least as soft as any Lexus). This same person criticized us for talking about the obvious problems with the 2009 suspension, that Hyundai Motors dis-liked so much they made suspension changes in mid-year 2009, 2010, and 2012 (and boasted about how the ride was "improved" in 2010 and 2012 press releases).

Don't forget to check the tire PSI on your next test drive, but the Genesis is still not going to be a cushy ride like the Equus or some other cars you have driven.

I could not disagree with the OP's opinion more. Which is why I leased a 2012! But everyone is entitled to their highly subjective opinion, including automotive journalists, who are no more qualified than any forum poster, imho.

I have to ask what the OP thought the response would be to such a negative critique of the car many of the forum members own? And one test drive is all it took for you to reach a conclusion on suspension setup? I drove my 2012 for a day and a half before deciding to lease it.

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!

There are several non-Genesis owners who post frequently and strongly defend the Genesis, and attack those owners who have criticized the Genesis suspension. YEH (over 400 posts) and ImInPA (also over 400 posts) are two that I can think of. ImInPA almost bought a Genesis, but opted for a Volvo instead, but has posted here for years after his Volvo purchase (his last visit to this forum was today). YEH apparently does not own a Genesis, but seems to be connected to Hyundai in some way based on all the "inside" information he provides (his last visit to this forum was about 6 days ago).

I don't want to sound like I am trying to prevent anyone from posting, becasue I believe anyone who wants to post should be able to do so (Including cmartin), regardless of whether they own a Genesis. Certainly someone shopping for a Genesis has a right to make comments and post.

As "one of those people" with the implied connection to Hyundai (there is none), my upgrade to the Equus came after my 27 month lease on the Genesis was up. It had nothing to do with the suspension and I certainly didn't dump the Gen for it. As for criticizing the folks talking about the "obvious problems" with the '09, I criticized the ONE owner who obsessed over the ride's defects. The same ONE who tried my car (4.6) to see if it was different than his (3.8). (I actually liked his ride better than mine, he thought mine was worse.)

But yeah, maybe if the OP comes back or sticks around you can teach him about synthetic oils. You know, the one subject you'd be right about.

Question - does hyundai offer the sterling metalic blue color option for the 2012 genesis?

I certainly did not mean to suggest that you cancelled your lease to upgrade to the Equus, but the suspensions of the two cars are so different, that it seemed to me that someone who so strongly defended the rather stiff and jittery ride of the 2009 Genesis would not like the soft cushy ride of the Equus, if they were really being objective about it.

If someone who claimed the 2009 Genesis had a great ride, and then purchased their Genesis off of lease after 27 months, I would be much more inclined to believe their previous praise of the 2009 suspension. Maybe I am weird, but even if I won a $100 million lottery, I would not switch cars every 27 months if I really liked it.

Check the Hyundai USA website and do the Build Your Own, etc.

The '09 Gen was the best car I ever drove. At lease end the choice was to buy the car, and wait for the '12 or get an '11 immediately. The Equus in the showroom gave me a 3rd choice.

Hello Mark. Yep, I still have a soft spot for the Genesis.I have moved from the Volvo to an E Class Bluetec (loving it too btw). I enjoy this forum and stop by often. So many aspects of vehicles are subjective that it really doesn't matter if someone likes something or not. Drive what you like. I wish I had a Hyundai dealer in my area that I would feel comfortable doing business with. For me, the pre-sales dealer experiece put me off the Genesis.

Does that include past, as well as present associations? Your handle name seems a little strange, and implies that at one time you owned a Hyundai for reasons that were not entirely by choice.

I've told the story before, I'll tell you again too:

I drove 2 Excels back in the day because it was all I could afford. Manual trannies, no radio. Cheapest they had. As finances improved, so did my cars. I never thought I'd 'choose' a Hyundai again, and in fact was going to get the new VW CC at my Passat's lease end. The dealership also sold Hyundai's and I saw the Genesis in the showroom. This was in '08.
I'm back to Hyundai by choice.

Okie dokie.

i'll weigh in quickly here as a new owner of an 09 4.6.
i've heard before i bought the car about the suspension concerns, but for my wife and i, it doesn't bother us much- a little annoying at times, but not too bad. yes it tends to be a bit harsh and bumpy on rough surfaces, but most of the time, the road is smooth enough where you realy don't notice it much.

i also drove the new 2012 4.6 the other day and found it to be a bit smoother, but no real big significant diff.

value wise, this car cannot be beat imo, and that is why we bought- great luxury car at a bargain price.

The people on this forum are like any internet forum. They are a self-selected group that care a lot about the subject matter and they'll often respond strongly to opinions that go against the norm.

I can't speak to how much the suspension of the 2012 has improved. My big concern was if the R-Spec was going to rattle my fillings. But since I live in an area with pretty good roads I find the ride firm but composed and certainly not objectionable. I've only owned one for a few weeks but in that short time I've never wished for a softer suspension.

Suspension feel is very subjective. You can read a hundred opinions on this forum and in car magazines but ultimately what matters is you taking the car for a test drive on roads you're familiar with and decide for yourself.
