Looking into buying CPO 2015 3.8 AWD Ultimate

So far after some searching I've read people having issues with the sunroof, the rear sunshade, and the headunit... that's about it.

Are there any 'known' issues these cars have that may or may not include those listed above?

Ultimately, I'm concerned about what's going to break, how expensive it is, and about how often you run into something that needs a dealer repair. How has your experience with been their service department in recent months? Do you always get a Genesis as a loaner?

I'm especially interested to hear from prior Lexus owners as to how the Genesis compares.

Thanks!

IMHO opinion the answer to your specific questions, boils down to how good is the service department(s) that you are going to deal with.

To expand further, in my case I live in an area that have 7 Hyundai dealers within a 30 miles radius, that allowed me to sample most of them, here is my experience so far:

- I owned 4 genesis thus far (starting with first V8 that was registered in GA back in 2008)
- With the three multi state large dealers, there is less room for negotiation of the base price, but tend to have better trained service departments which is key to getting problematic issues resolved, I frequently visit 4 deals for routine maintance but only trust 2 for the major services and only one warranty issues.
- the 4.6 and the R-Spec I purchased HMA bumper two bumper (Hyundai warranty) 100k/10 year warranty and every little issue was addressed without question, the major issues R-Spec head unit, the and engine replacement on the 4.6 (due dealer negligence).
- Due to some unforceen circumstances I was forced to purchase two cars last month, but the HMA warranty was a tad too much to stomach at the same time, so I went with a third party warranty from the largest and my most trusted dealer.

Just Incase it proves useful for you, here is the proces I followed:

- Before signing the final papers, I agreed the 100k/10 year b2b warranty price I was willing to pay for both vehicles.
- Clearly understood when the warranty terminated (100k/10 year of the original date of the registration of each vehicle).
- I reached out the wrap insurance company, confirmed the coverage with them (for specific examples, HUD failure, lane assist failure etc).
- Walked to the dealer’s service department, since I knew couple of the guys, I asked what they thought of that insurance.
- called 2 other dealers service departments, and asked a - if they dealt with this warranty company and b- what they thought about them.

Part of buy the Mrs car was to get her to drive, Inifini, Lexus, Audi, MB (so she get it out of her system ;), part of that process I asked about what they thought the third party insurance.

Conclusion: background homework was key in my decision making process to try minimize risk as much as possible.

[EDIT]
Having a CPO, was only going to cover 100k/10 years ‘power train’, 2015 only has 3 years bumper to bumper, the 2016 has 5 years bumper to bumper.
[/EDIT]

I hope this helps and good luck...

In my opinion of the 2015 Genesis the weak points are leather quality, rear camera issues, and interior trim finish durability on contact surfaces like the gear knob, steering wheel controls, etc. The headlight plastic covering/clear-coat also seem to be peeling on my car if I look close enough.

So all and all, most issues seem to be minor cosmetic flaws, except for the rear view camera defects and sunroof rattles. My car do not have the sunroof rattle, but it seems common among other owners.

My wife drives a 2011 Lexus RX AWD and it has a ivory interior similar to my Genesis , but it has not peeled or ripped yet for the 6 years we have owned it. The controls are also in good condition. I had to replace my Genesis shift knob and wiper stalk in less than three years due to the chrome finish that has peeled off. My leather has peeled in certain places due to wear I assume. However, the previous owner may have been very rough with the car.

One thing to note regarding leather quality, is the 3.8 ultimate and the 5.0 have Napa leather which has a completely different quality than the other trims.

The 2009 4.6 Genesis had the same leather type which was light color, after 10 years of very hard usage, including a child seat for 4 years, it was traded in as in ‘excellent’ condition. Just my two cents...

2015 does have a 5/60 bumper to bumper, however, warranty on non-HID headlights and radio changed in 2016. IIRC, 2015 and prior was 3/36, but bumped to 5/60 for the 2016. Everything else is 5/60, and has been since 1999.

Indeed, it was my understanding on the 2015 advanced electronics, which includes HUD, parking sensors, cross traffic, emergency breaking sensors, radio, auto leveling, so on and so forth, is covered for 3/36 month only.

That was my understadning as well, which is why I added the HMA 10/100 bumper to bumper when I purchased my '15 CPO. I haven't had the chance to use it, or take the vehicle in for service yet as I've only owned it 3 months and ~800 miles.

Have had our 16’ 3.8 Ultimate for 2 years and 12,700 miles purchased new right off the show room floor, not being totally sure of Hyundai quality even in their luxury brand we opted for the 10/100k bumper to bumper warranty. To be personally honest we’ve had absolutely no issues with it.though on the 1st morning home the battery was dead, though ah,crap!
But they came and jumped it and not a single problem since.
Love our girl lol.

Those are all covered 5/60. I do remember something that was only covered 3/36, that I thought would have been covered 5/60, but I don't remember what it was. I ran a warranty inquiry on the parking sensors, HUD unit, blind spot monitors, and smart cruise control module, and all came back as covered 5/60.

Almost 60(?)k miles on my '15 ultimate.

Some items I had done:
  • Infotaiment screen. It was replaced due to a blotch on it.
  • Moonroof assembly replaced due to creaking.
    • HD radio antenna had to be reseated right after that, though the dealer said it was probably was their fault while replacing the moonroof.
  • The '15 DRLs are the turn signal bulbs so those will be out of pocket replacements when they burn out (incandescent) and if you leave em on, will be pretty often. Its a wear item but they're fairly cheap though, ~15 bucks and the dealer will install them for free.
  • Driver and front passenger door rubber seals both had issues.
    • Driver side kept giving me an odd whistling at high speeds
    • Top part of the passenger seal near the pointy door corner was warped
  • My front genesis badge sticker (ha, sticker... it's the logo inside the wing) half wore off. Entire badge was replaced.
  • Windshield wiper washer tubes broke, had to be replaced
  • Bluelink went crazy for awhile saying ABS was tripped. Got 20 alerts in a month in Dec 2017. It just went away so not sure what happened...
  • Driver side keyless entry stopped working recently... the handle had to be replaced and repainted
I got the CPO extended warranty and the dealer tire protection. Since there are potholes galore, both paid for themselves. I know Hyundai has been improving quality but if you buy Korean, it's a no brainer, get the warranty, especially with all the electronics on the thing.

Edit: In terms of service, the dealer where I bought the car is decent but you have to go the extra mile into "proving" something is wrong. Unless it was something that was physically obvious and 100% happening all the time (ie, keyless entry, and washer tubes). I've had multiple dealers swear on their mother's grave that nothing is wrong with the car and its in tip top shape. I had to jump into the car with them to point out what was going on for more "subjective" repairs like sunroof creaking. There was a tire tread issue that I had to get the shop foreman involved but that was more of a tire issue vs car. and was replaced under the tire warranty

Don't count on getting a Genesis loaner unless you have a generous dealer. I usually get a random Hyundai car. Usually Sonata/Santa Fe (New Santa Fe is decent). I think I've gotten a Genesis loaner once? On the Hyundai branded ones, you can only get them if the dealer happens to have on rotating around their own loaner fleet.

I have a CPO 2015 genesis , and the dealer told me that Original 5 year bumper to bumper warranty / 10 year powertrain warranty transfers to me with the CPO vehicles.

This was a part of the WINDOW STICKER

Later when i registered the vehicle VIN in myhyundai.com , i downloaded the -> Hyundai Resources -> Manuals & Warranties -> Warranty Information & Owners Handbook

This says only about 10 year powertrain -

Not sure whats correct.
Should i look at buying additional Hyundai Protection Plan Vehicle Service Contract ?

That's because only the original owner gets the 10/100 powertrain warranty. The 5/60 is transferable, whether it's CPO or not. CPO bumps the powertrain back up to the original 10/100.

In case of a Certified pre owned car bought via Hyundai Dealer - did anyone get the 5 year bumper to bumper warranty in a written note or warranty certificate.

Where would it be mentioned / which document should i check.

So based on what I've read, I think as someone currently looking at buying CPO, I still want protection on all electronics beyond just the 5/60 plan (5 years from original purchase date on a 2015 is almost up ;) )

The platinum plan is what I'm looking for and am currently in the process of trying to get a quote on that.
HMF - Hyundai Protection Plan

If you can negotiate a good deal on HMF, IMHO it would be a wise move, unfortunately, in my case I had to settle for a third party (two for the price of one 😂), in the hope that I will never need to use that warranty for either vehicle, in next 7 years or so...

Bought my 2015 3.8 AWD Ultimate new, has 61k on it now. Replaced the front turn signal/driving lights bulbs couple times. The head unit was replaced because it wouldn't remember the Xmradio subscription ($5000 under warranty). Otherwise an excellent driving vehicle. I'd buy another.

I have a 2015 5.0 Ultimate. Problems I have had:
-Head unit drops SiriusXM subscription info every time car is turned off. $Not fixed yet.
-Blue Link remote start/lock/unlock succeeds only about 15% to 20% of the time. Unacceptable failure rate. Saves me $ by not renewing.
-Loose metal pieces in airbag module. A major safety concern. $Cost never disclosed to me.
-Paint is bubbling off front plastic area around grille. $Not fixed yet.
-Notch that holds gas cap cover closed broke off. $250.
-Rubber piece covering trunk release handle deteriorated and cracked apart. $75
-Fuel lines had to be replaced due to poor manufacturing. This would have been over $2K if not under warranty, but seems to be confined to a 5.0 isssue.

But all in all, it has never left me stranded and always starts right up. Loaner cars have always been provided, but usually a rental from the local Enterprise (Ford Focus, Nissan Altima, Ram 1500 crewcab) but one G80 and one G90. Service department has been great and professional, way better than my local BMW dealer I dealt with for a decade who were arrogant, played bait/switch games with pricing/coupons, and sometimes would not fix things correctly the 1st time. I never have these issues with Genesis.

I bought the Platinum warranty on my CPO 2015 5.0 Ultimate. Haven't had to use it - hopefully won't - but I did read in the packet that it doesn't seem to cover the "radar" portion of the vehicle...specifically connected to the adaptive cruise control. Since it hasn't been a problem I don't how Hyundai would address it. Being that the in-house finance rep endorsed the plan because it covers all the technology, I'd at least have a good argument if they declined warranty service.

My biggest issue is trying to get the rear left tire exactly the same pressure as the rear right! One pound off no matter how many times I try.

How do you know it is one pound off? Are you using an accurate digital meter? It may be 1/10th off. 34.4 would show a pound difference from 34.5 on the dash.

It's the dash reading. Not really a complaint as I understand that isn't the most accurate reading, but I have tried different gauges at the tire and even added a bit more air. Still can't get it perfect (more of an OCD thing).
Trying to find an optimum pressure without exceeding 40 PSI in this cooler weather.

I've also noticed the right side tires warm up about a pound faster than the left side until they top out. I thought with me being the sole occupant (usually) the left side would. Go figure.
