If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Looking for insight...what do you get with a 2012 Hyundai Genesis that you don't get

I'm in the market for a new car and am seriously considering the Hyundai Genesis sedan. I took one on a test drive and it drove alright but I'm trying to figure out what I get with the Hyundai that I wouldn't get with an Lexus or Acura at a similar price point?

I'm not totally hung up on the prestige factor (obviously, since I'm considering a Hyundai) but if I'm going to buy the Genesis there needs to be something of value that I wouldn't get with one of the Japanese competitors. If all else is equal I'd rather just get a Lexus/Acura/Infiniti.

I know the Genesis with the 4.6L engine is more powerful than the other cars in its class but I couldn't care less about speed. So, aside from that, what else am I getting with this vehicle?

Thanks in advance!

Rear wheel drive vs. Acura. More powerful engines. Better cruise control, Better sound system.

Thanks for the response.

What makes the cruise control better? I'm guessing it is adaptive and the competition is not.

How does the Genesis sound system stack up vs. the Mark Levinson audio in the Lexus?

I'll do my own research as well (I am currently) but sometimes it is better to get input directly from vehicle owners than what the critics have to say.

Thanks again.

Well you can do a quick comparison on the respective websites but the Genesis is positioned against the Lexus GS for example

The 'base' GS starts @ $46900 the Genesis 4.6 fully loaded is $44,500

The Genesis gives you over the base GS:

Navigation
Cooled driver seat
Heated rear seats
Adaptive Front Lighting
Auto Hold
Smart Cruise
Rain sense wipers
Premium Audio system
Rear Sunshade

These additional features would cost thousand more on the GS. You would have to go up to the GS460 starting at $55,370 to match the Genesis.

Excellent response, thanks.

I don't even know what "Auto Hold" is so I'll have to go look that one up.

Excellent response, thanks.

IT allows you to take your foot off the brake at a stop light - the Genesis doesn't move - like an automatic brake and one of my favorite features!

Beg to differ on the sound system. The Lexicon is great but the ELS is stellar too and rated one of the best. In addition the Acura rear view camera is hi-def and the air conditioning is instant cold even if the car has been sitting all night. As we know the same can't be said about the Genesis.

great value for the quality and copious options the genisis comes with.

also, hyundai offers the best power train warranty (10 years/ 100,000 miles) in the industry.

I'm not sure what your time frame is on your purchase, but since you're considering the Lexus GS you might want to check when the all new GS is going to be released. I remember reading "early 2012" but I don't know specifics. IMO the current GS is a forgettable car with lackluster styling. The new one promises better styling both inside and out. Just speaking for myself, it'd aggravate me to buy a car then immediately see the newer generation of that car on the road.

Of course if you decide on the Genesis you don't have that particular worry! :D

Not sure if Hyundai made a change, but the Rear-view camera in my 2012 is much clearer than that in my former 2009. The difference is quite significant.

I have a 2012 Premium (not Tech). I also have a Lexus and have gotten ES 350s as loaners many times before.

While the ES 350 does ride a little better, its interior quality is not up to the Genesis. It is more expensive comparably equipped, less roomy and has a smaller trunk. And. although it is a handsome car, I think the Genesis is more elegant and upscale (I prefer the 10 year old S-Class shape). The engine and transmission technology are at least one generation ahead (for a 2012 Genesis) and at full throttle the power is significantly better (although for all around feel, the Lexus drivetrain is dialed in nicely). In two Lexi (my wife's) I have never found the seats to be terribly supportive, so I think the Hyundai is better there as well. If you go up to the GS, E Class, 5 series, etc. The price differential is around $13-15,000.00 for a comparably equipped vehicle. Yes, those vehicles do have a more stable, dialed in ride quality and a slightly better interior but for me I simply could not justify the extra cost. The warranty is nice as well but I hope that I never need it.

Also, if you are comparing an Acura TL, the (only fair) ride of the Genesis is better and the road noise level of the Genesis is noticeably better. Room is not in the same league nor is trunk space. The Acura does have solid interior quality but the look is not upscale.

One thing you do have to consider is that the dealer experience is likely to be better (and more expensive) for the higher line brand. For instance, there was a concern recently on my wife's RX 350 that we could not find the wheel lock key and I was having the winter tires put on at my house by Tirevan. The Lexus dealer offered to have someone drive over with the master key when the tire fellow came over. You will not get that type of service from Hyundai.

I have never driven the Infiniti. However, the M is priced comparably to an E Class or a 5 series and the six cylinder, while powerful, is not refined. My 3.8 is a great engine, although the 8 speed auto is one software upgrade from excellent (slow to downshift).

Fantastic insight...thanks for the well thought out response.

I bought my 4.6 Tech for 38k out the door. A year later my credit union was willing to refinance it for the full MSRP=45,500.

I came out of a Jaguar XJ8(70-80k) into the Genesis, and have never regretted my choice. I wouldn't pay 40k for a Toyota, I'm just sayin......
oh and the Lexicon system is a fine audiophile/enthusiasts listening experience order a processor for 10grand or stop by a Rolls Royce dealership and see if they will let you plop into a Phantom for a sound test, seriously though bring some music your very familiar with- you will be blown away
