If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. Hey Guys,

I think this car is beautiful and I am in the market for a "new" car so I am definitely giving the Genesis sedan a good look. Here's a few questions I have regarding some of the year and model differences.

1. What are the differences in the headlights from year to year? When did they start implementing the LED strip because I really like that. Also, I've noticed some headlights have 1 projector and some also have what I believe are 4 LED headlamps.

2. I really want the navigation package. Do all the 4.6L come with this standard? Is it hard to find the 3.8L with the technology package?

3. Why do I see some Genesis's with the H on the trunk and some with the wing logo?

4. What grade of gasoline does the 3.8L take and what does the 4.6L take?

5. Any other major differences between the 2010, 2011 and 2012 years? Those are the years I'm looking at, preferably 2011 or 2012.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hey Guys,

I cant really say all the headlight differences, but i believe the led strip started in 2012

2. I really want the navigation package. Do all the 4.6L come with this standard? Is it hard to find the 3.8L with the technology package?

I only looked at v8's since they had all the gizmos. cant help ya on the 3.8 questions.

3. Why do I see some Genesis's with the H on the trunk and some with the wing logo?

Its what the korean domestic market (KDM) logo looks like. many people change them. The dealer wanted $185 to do it, but i bought it online for $12 and did it myself. It's personal preference, but I thought it looks classier than the "flying h". People also change out the wheel caps and the airbags with the KDM wings too.

4. What grade of gasoline does the 3.8L take and what does the 4.6L take?

they will take 87, but recommend premium 91+. on my 2013 5.0 R-spec, it states 87 octane is 420hp, and 91 octane makes 429hp. I have run 4 tanks of 87 with mileages ranging from 21.6-23.0. I half way through my first tank of 93, and havent finished it yet. Not seeing a substantial mileage difference, or feeling any more horsepower yet, but some people swear they do.

5. Any other major differences between the 2010, 2011 and 2012 years? Those are the years I'm looking at, preferably 2011 or 2012.

I went with the 2013 because they changed the stereo to have a hard drive in it, and added blue link. although i havent really used blue link like i thought i would. Plus with there being all the rebates, and competition on them, i was able to beat the hell out of dealers til i got the price i wanted. dont talk yourself out of a new one until you see what you can do on the price. I believe the 10yr power train warranty is only good for the original owner or for certified pre owned. fwiw, i paid 37,400 +tax, tag, reg for a 2013 rspec sedan in may. there will be more choices and you can get the color you want with a new one too.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Thanks a lot kf4 for the reply. I might actually take a whirl at a new one if you say there are easy to get down on the price. I wasn't looking to spend over 28-29k but ya never know.

Thanks again!

the 4 led head light your mentioning is the Prada headlights (not sold in the US as a factory option)

I haven't seen any change using premium vs regular.

Good to know! I'm just so used to putting 87 octane in my Mazda 6 V6 (factory recomended) that I would hate to jump to a car that requires at least 91 octane.

^ im just the opposite my last two cars required premium... it strange for me to put regular in the tank.

1. 2012 was the first year for the LED strip in the headlight. Need a car with tech package to get the ALFS (steerable headlights). Older V6s with tech couldn't get ALFS regardless.

2. Tech package was not standard on the 4.6L from 2009-2011, but when I bought mine last year, pretty much all V8s I saw online had the tech package. The majority of 3.8s I saw online only came with the base package, they are harder to find optioned up with navi (but not impossible). I was originally looking for a 3.8 with navi, but when I was ready to buy I couldn't find any in my area so I took the plunge to the 4.6L...no regrets:cool:

3. Wings are KDM, but a lot of dealers even put them on to dress up the car a bit.

4. Both engines run fine on regular 87. I've put both in my 4.6L, no HP or mileage difference that is noticeable in daily driving, so I stick with 87 no problems. I always buy from a "name brand" gas station though.

5. 2010 & 2011 are pretty much the same. They added the adaptive cruise control and electronic parking brake in 2010 which my 2009 doesn't have. 2012 they jazzed up the exterior a bit...the headlights and integrated the exhaust into the bumper. 2013 they "improved" the tech package navi with a new interface, HDD was always there but can store music now and added Blue Link. I say "improved" because the interface is apparently better, but it seems the head unit is still prone to same sort of crashes and lock-ups since the 2009 model:rolleyes:

Here's a tip:-
Don't go looking for a Genesis on the Lot, walk around and let the salesmen offer you various models, even drive 1 or 2.. then look at a "G" and ask what is that? Let them put you in a "G" - they will think they have up sold you, you test drive and quibble/groan about anything you like.. After that keep the price in mind and get ready to walk out if they don't meet your price..be hard..
JUST Before you sign, ask for at least 3 free services, a guaranteed loaner in the event of being off the road..:rolleyes::cool:

Remember buying a vehicle is a contact sport ;)

Thanks Wow! Good tips! Even though I'm 31, I'll bring my mom. She's the best car haggler I've every seen. She won't buy until the dealership is loosing money on the deal.

Not a direct answer to your questions but these tidbits may help point you towards a few high level guiding principles:

MSN cars has one of the very best online comparison tools, if you want to look at the detailed data sheet comparisons across all models from year to year.

Winged badges are an after market add on. Some Genesis owners keep the stock "H," and others buy wings from either EBay, the dealer or an online supplier. They're very easy to buy and to self install, and not too expensive. Don't let the wings become a decision criteria for which used car you buy, as its a very simple add on. My informal observations say that of the one or two Genesis I see on the street per week, about 50% of owners have changed to Wings. It's purely personal preference. I, for one, think Wings make the car look even more awesome, but that its gorgeous with or without 'em.

My strong suggestions based on having recently gone through the same process you are starting:

Take your time and give yourself several weeks if not months to research options identify the exact year, model and your short list of "must have" features, then just wait for it. Don't buy too soon if you aren't yet fully familiar with the nuances. It's worth extra time to understand and test.

I spent weeks doing research,
but should have spent a few more weeks doing hands on testing which would have informed my final decision more wisely.

So, what I would suggest is that once you identify which features you *think* are your "must haves," then plan to extensively test each one first hand -- *not* by watching the marketing demo, but by actually using the feature on the street in a real world scenario.

Testing *first hand* is key. The online videos explain using best case descriptions, but do not give a true sense of how well the feature works.

For example, on paper I thought the lane changing warning system (LDWS) was a must have. Sounded superb on paper and the online demo sold me. I didn't actually test it first hand with a critical eye, and as it turns out, I can absolutely live without it. It's a great idea but the implementation isn't perfect, (the beep is too quiet almost inaudible unless you're listening for it). so in hind sight I could live without it. (Not complaining, just using it as an example of why you want to actually test the features that you're using in your purchase criteria). So had I done a few more hours of hands on testing, LDWD would have moved from my "must have" list to my "nice to have" list. I'd rather have it than not have it, but its not a deal breaker if I didn't end up with it.

Same with Blue Link. I had a choice between two almost identical cars, a new 2013 with Blue Link, and a like-new but used 2012 with 18k miles, identical tech package features, but no Blue Link -- for $10k less.

Because on paper, Blue Link was a must have, I chose the 2013, thinking I was getting this amazing technological advantage. After using Blue Link for half a dozen times over the course of the first few hours of owning the car, I realized that for me, Blue Link is a nice to have, not a must have. (For others who have different needs, I'm sure Blue Link is legitimately a must have, but not the case for me). Had I spent a few minutes hands on with Blue Link, trying out each of the key features myself --not watching the sales guy do a guided demo-- I would have realized very quickly, that Blue Link was not for me. Its barely a nice to have.

Lastly, had I spent time thoroughly using the Navigator/Driver Info System, I *might* have even decided to forego the tech package altogether, and just purchase a used 2012 premium at a much lower price, then buy an after market Navi upgrade.

All I that said, for me, of all things, after 2 months in my new 2013, the cooled seat turns out to be my heart of hearts must have feature. I love it. And since that's only avail in the Tech, I'm happy with the package I ended up with.

But looking back 2-3 months ago, if I knew then what I know now, I would have likely opened up my search to look at all the 2010-2012s with cooled seats, regardless of other features, and I might have spent $10-$15k less by foregoing all the looks-good-on-paper only stuff like LDWS, BlueLink etc.

Bottom line, I love the car and am so happy with it. I just would have likely bought a diff model at significant cost savings had I done hands on research.

Food for thought, hope it helps in your consideration journey.

Depending on what area of the country you hang your hat, I would not hesitate to shop around even if you have to have the car shipped to you for a better deal.

2009-2011 4.6 v8 used ZF transmission made in Germany. Starting with 2012 Hyundai built the transmission. Also thru 2011 model year engines were fuel injection in intake, after 2011 engines are GDI. Some owners are having problems with the GDI engines using oil.

Correction: The 4.6 was not changed to GDI.

My 2009 V6 Tech (built in 08) has AFLS...
