  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

In 1978 my wife and I took a drive from Arlington west to the Skyline Drive and had a little picnic on the mountain tops before driving back home that afternoon.

A couple weeks ago (Memorial Day) we repeated that drive with today's starting/ending point being Chesterfield, Va and the car being my 2011 Coupe instead of the first trip's 1976 Pontiac Astre. My first car was yellow and my Coupe (probably the last car I'll buy) is also yellow.

Anyway, left the house and hit up I95. Ran into stopped traffic a few miles above Ashland and got off on Rt. 1 north. Rode up Rt. 1 (better road surface than I95 and almost as fast considering how people on I95 drive these days) to Fredericksburg and got off on Rt. 17 and went to Warrenton. Got a Kentucky Fried Chicken dinner (like we did in 1978), put them in a small ice chest to keep them warm and drove out Rt. 211 to the Skyline Drive.

Now it cost $15 to get on Skyline Drive up there, first time around it was free. We drove down Skyline Drive, stopped at some overlooks, finally found one that wasn't crawling with people and ate our picnic lunch.

We got back in the car and drove south on Skyline Drive till we hit Rt. 33 and turned east towards Richmond. Got off Rt. 33 when I saw a sign that said I64 8 miles and we road east on I64 for a few miles before getting off on Rt. 522 and riding down to Rt. 60. We drove Rt. 60 east to Rt. 288 and went to house. I stopped to fill up on Rt. 60 just before we hit Rt. 288.

I got 28.8 mpg. The best I ever got on a "trip". Usually about 25 or just under 26 mpg is what I get. The difference this time was no suitcases of clothes, only one rifle and a couple pistols. Oh, and the slower than usual speeds driven due to the roads, the number of cops on the roads (saw 28 police cars, SUVs and motorcycles from start to finish - 8 on I95 between Rt. 288 and the north city limits of Richmond) and just not being in a hurry on roads with nice scenery that we hadn't been on in 36 years.

We're going to do it again this fall.

That Coupe is one comfortable, fun ride.
