2015 3.8, 51k miles.

Just bought at 50k miles a month ago.

Took it to the local hyundai dealership for an oil change and to ask about a rattle. They found metal shavings in the oil and are recommending a full engine replacement. Thought worst case was going to be the drive shaft.

Any other threads about metal shavings? Saw one so far but for the previous generation. Only have a 3 month/3k mile warranty on the car. Foresee a dispute with the dealership I purchased it from.

Where can you even buy a new engine?

If I really have to replace the engine, out of curiosity, can you drop a V8 in there? What else would need to get replaced/updated for that to work.

If covered under warranty, go for it. If you have to pay, get a second opinion. I'm not qualified to give an opinion other than that.

Can you drop a V8 in it? Sure. Will it run? Not so easy. Back in the day it was common to trop a big V8 into an older car no matter the brand. Hemi in a Model A or '53 Ford pickup was common. Today, there are computers and a load of electronics to match up. If is far more than a few hundred bucks upgrade.

Oh yea. Forgot how complicated newer cars are! Well....I'll keep everyone posted on what happens. This is not fun.

Did the dealer show you the metal shavings and old oil? or a picture? May need it for proof.

Just pics. Why do you ask? Should I worry about them lying about it? Edit: sorry...didn't see that last part about proof.

What was the cause of the failure or metal debris?

They said likely a bearing but I don't think they definitively confirmed what it was. Its probably just based on the shavings. And based on the knocking/rattle noise. I looked up bearing / knocking noises on youtube and mine is a very light version of those videos. Some of those sound so terrible and was constant. I felt like my knocking noise was only at certain RPMs under light loads.

I’d hightail right back to the dealer I got it from. See if you can document the rod knock, if it is a bearing, on video if they decide to say there is no problem. Sorry to hear about the troubles.

The dealer is probably correct. How often did you change your engine oil?

Metal shaving in the pan is most likely from a worn rod bearing. Sound like a rebuild or engine replacement needed.:(

I would have gone straight there but they are 6 hours away. I let them know what my local dealer told me and showed me. I'll try to record the noise. We shall see. And thanks.

Its a new to me and this is my first oil change (about 1400 miles after my purchase). Carfax was great though...services religiously at one Hyundai Dealership and sold as a CPO around 22k miles, and then the last 30k miles its been at a different Hyundai Dealership regularly. There was an 8k gap between the dealership that sold it to me and the last record though.

And yes, my local Hyundai Dealership recommended a replacement. Quoted me a whole $20k. Which is why I'm definitely in contact with the dealership that I purchased it from.

It was probably ran low on oil if the oil change interval was too long which possibly allowed the rod bearings to run dry or without proper lubrication.

One of the downfall to longer oil changes is oil burning which can allow up to a quart to disappear every 1k-2k miles. Oil loss can occur from defective PCV valves which goes unnoticed.

That would be unfortunate if that last interval caused the issues.

Question for anyone: Is the stock 2015 Genesis Oil Pan magnetic?

Apparently the 3.8 is know for its lack of QC when they cast the block. Some of the casting edges get left and they can break off and wreak havoc inside the block. This happened to me, and it was a freaking nightmare! Ended up getting a used 3.8 with low miles for about 2500.00 and got it swapped out. That was after 3 months in the shop my portion was 2000.00 after warranty the co. Getting a new engine is near impossible, and finding replacement parts for a rebuild is very difficult also. Shop around online and get a low mileage used, find a mechanic you can trust and have them do the job.

Would a Hyundai service department lie to a car owner about repairs required?
YES.
Do they speak truthfully?
AT TIMES.
Should you trust them?
I would never trust any automotive repair service out of the blocks. I know a few individuals I trust, but it took a while. Maybe it's just me being paranoid.

Here's an update / recap:

1. Hyundai Dealer: Knocking is from engine / found the shavings
2. Dealer I purchased from: Looks like someone threw shavings in there (based on pics as they are in southern cal)
3. Independent shop: Knocking sounds like rod knock / bad bearing

I've got 2 out of 3 shops saying bad engine. 1 of 3 shops took the original preliminary position of foul play

Currently in discussions with Dealer I purchased it from as to resolution and next steps.

Ha. Expensive way to screw over customers! If one dealer is capable of being shady, then the dealer I purchased it from is equally capable of being shady. I don't know who to totally trust.

All i know is I bought a car, the original dealer said the knocking was nothing, everything points to rod knock now regardless of shavings, and I've got warranties on my side. Someone else is paying for my car's repairs.

LOL. Most internal engine parts will have a golden hue to them due to oil tarnish/staining. The darker the golden color of the engine internals; the longer the oil change intervals in most cases. Engines with a light golden color usually has the shortest oil change intervals if high mileage or are low mileage engines.
