  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

i have had my Genesis for about 1 1/2 months. After the first week the passenger side mirror stopped folding in. I took it to the dealer. After working with it they said that it needed to be replaced. They ordered one and said they would call when it arrived. They were great about contacting me with updates as it took about a month to get one. Finally they called and had one. They sent it to the body shop to be painted and it is ready to install.

With the Christmas season so busy, I told them I would wait until next week and then bring it in. Well, a couple of days ago, the mirror started to work again for no reason I can tell. It has been working flawlessly for about 5 days. My wife thinks I should still have it replaced since something was obviously defective. However, I am reluctant to replace an original part that is working. I am thinking about telling the dealer that I will hold off and see if it keeps working. What do you think?

If it quit once, it could quit again. Sounds like the dealer has gone to a great deal of trouble for you, I don't know that I'd tick him off now. I can just see with the next warranty issue. Of course, you could always present the facts to the dealer, and ask him what he recomments.

Re: What would you do?

You do have 5 years warranty so I'd give it at least another chance. I wouldn't want a new painted mirror- it may not match just right and believe me you'll notice.

Re: What would you do?

Go with what you feel comfortable with. It's your car at the end of the day.

You also have to take into consideration however, the fact that the mirror is actually defective and functioning only on an intermittent basis.

The question i would ask myself is " What would i do if the mirror quits working again one month from now?" By then the dealer may have returned the replacement product and may become reluctant to reorder it.

I would tell dealer about your concerns. You hate to replace mirror because of color matching concerns (and possible poor paint job- flacking down the road) and since original mirror starting working again you would like to keep as is, but put dealer on notice that if mirror fails a second time, you want it replaced.

I would replace it and be done with it. As noted above it could happen again. As for the color match on the paint, do a full inspection (holding it up to the car) prior to them installing it to insure it meets your satisfaction.

Thanks for the advice. I think I will discuss it with the dealer but lean toward replacing it and checking the paint job closely.

My side mirrors also did not fold. I found out that there is a rocker switch on the driver door which will disable the folding feature. I made sure the rocker switch was on the "Auto" setting and that solved the folding problem. I am not sure if this is your problem but it is worth checking.

That ... and [quite possibly NOT helpful as I note that you have said that ONE of the mirrors is not folding.] If you search for my name in the forums you will see a whole discussion of when I had the problem of BOTH not folding, and thanks to our wonderful people it became clear that the mirrors [both] do not fold when the car is locked by using the door's inside button but do when locked from the outside door button or the fob or the trunk.

Again: I note that this is when BOTH are not folding and I suspect I'm speaking bosh here as you said ONE but just in case, I share.

Yes, this was definitely a malfunction. My old lexus mirrors folded in the same way so I checked and rechecked. The driver side folded in correctly. You could hear the motor running on the passenger mirror but it wouldn't move. The dealer had the car for 2 days and couldn't make it work. The strange thing is that after not working for about 4 weeks, it suddenly started to work and has been flawless for the last week. The big mystery to me is what made it start again.

As stated, discuss with the dealer that it started working again as it might be an electrical issue. Did you press any of the mirror switches and then it started working again or did it just start working without you touching anything?

An electrical issue may be possible. I don't know what made it start working again. I didn't conciously do anything to make it start again. It will be curious what the service department says.

Dealer has already spent the money to paint the part, and if you cancel then HMA may not pay them back. I say fix it.
