If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. Hello,

I recently purchased a used 2016 Hyundai Genesis sedan 3.8 with 20K miles on it. I absolutely love the car, but recently the car started doing something alarming. Out of nowhere, when I kill the engine by pressing the start/stop button, instead of the radio and infotainment system staying on like normal (until I open the driver door), the car dies completely. When I try to press the power button again, the car doesn't start and there is literally no power in the car at all. Nothing works, quite literally. This happened yesterday, but it turned over like 5 minutes later. Now? I can't get it started for the life of me.

Also, this came up a couple of weeks ago, but I didn't notice the issue until I came back to my car. So I thought I just left the light on and my battery was dead. I called triple A, the battery was totally drained but I was able to get a jump. They said that based on how drained it was, that the problem was the alternator. I brought the car back to Hyundai because of warranty and they said it wasn't the alternator but the battery was bad. They replaced it.

So now I have a new battery and a functional alternator and this is happening. Anyone else experience this? Could it be faulty wiring? Fuses shorting out?

Any feedback or advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

If the battery and alt are good its most likely a bad connection on the battery or one of the cars ground wires. Check and tighten all the grounds.

A few others on this forum have reported the same problem, but I don't recall the details. I would search the forum and see if you can find the solution their dealers eventually used to fix it.

Google search works better than forum search. Here is an example of how to search this forum with google:

Thanks everyone for the responses ... Good news is, it started again and I'm able to drive it around like nothing happened. I did notice as the engine started, the clock set itself to the correct time (I watched the minute hand turn until it reached the correct minute/hour).

I'll go ahead and check the connections and if it happens again, I'll bring it in.

Thanks again

I've had issues where the brake pedal was super stiff and required He-Man strength to push it down before it would start.

My '16 has the clock issue. Several times (over 1.5 years) I've notice the clock displaying the wrong time when I got in the car. After starting the car, the clock winds to the correct time. But I've never had an issue with the battery/starting the car. I reported it to the dealer once and they could not duplicate the issue.

I had the same problem. Would push button to start it, hear a brief burp of the starter, then dead. Usually it would start up if I waited a couple of minutes. Clock would be usually at "noon". Often there were random settings changed, like the head up display settings would clear (always the blind spot warning for some reason!). Brought it in the first time and the dealer claimed it was a loose connection at the terminal (after keeping it a week!). Symptoms didn't change. A week or so later it was completely dead one morning. AAA jumped it to get it going and I drove it to the dealer. 10 days later they tell me that it was a short in the battery. They replaced it and no further problem since then (about a month ago). Why they couldn't determine that the first time is a mystery, but haven't been impressed with this dealer's service. Oh...I've also had a front turn signal bulb burn out- 18 months and 10k miles in! (as did a friend with a '15 5.0). Honestly, I expect the gremlins to pop up again. Seeing the other reports here and on the NHTSA website of the same problem, I can't believe these are all bad batteries, rather than an endemic problem with the electronics. Fingers crossed.

You'll likely find that there's a loose-ish connection at the battery. Our batteries have a crush-type washer connection at the post, which is different than most batteries I've had in other cars. Removing the cable from the battery, then firmly tightening the cable's connector back onto the battery solved my issue, and I haven't had an issue with it in over two years.

I have a 2016 Genesis and it's doing the same thing. I hope tomorrow they can tell me something and hopefully it won't cost a lot of money.

i am having the same issue. i purchased the 2016 Genesis sedan 3.8 like 2 weeks ago. i checked the carfax and noticed something like "inspected hard start and no start" i didn't take much attention to it then but now i experienced this random no start, i think the previous owner had experienced it too.
it happened to me during the afternoon and happened to my wife on 3 days later. my wife's experience was that the car didn't start at all first then all of sudden the engine started to run. so she tried to reverse out of the drive way, she succeeded in changing gear from Park to Reverse. the reverse camera activated and the car started to move in reverse. she tried to slowdown by pressing on the break pedal but the pedal wouldn't budge and it was stuck stiff. my wife said she had to bring the car to stop by forcefully changing gear back to park from the reverse. which mean the break pedal sensor was working. i understand if you pump the break while the engine is off then the air will get filled up and you can't press the pedal anymore. but once the car's engine is started to run then pedal should be able to pressed again, but that didn't happened right away for her at that time.
i took it to the dealership and explained the situation, they said they checked all the battery and ensured proper fitting and tightness and said they couldn't recreate the no start situation. they recommended that the key-fob i have had a low battery and replaced it.

i want to check the battery cable fitment but when i opened the battery cover it looked completely different. fuse box is integrated and i couldn't figure out what to check so i had to take it to the dealer.

if anyone has a picture to show how to check the fitment or looseness please do share.
