  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I drove it (4.6) at night for the first time, only to find out the high beams are standard Halogen bulbs and not HID.
I had this beautiful white light and then hit the brights to have some blecchy yellow light out there.
Has anyone updated their standard bulbs with another brand or color?
Otherwise, I'm loving it. What a steep learning curve on the electronics! Wow!

Hmm, not sure if other brand have high beam HID's, but wouldn't that endanger the vision of oncoming drivers if the car DID have one? Regular HID alone is bright enough, but is high beam HID really necessary?

I hate to keep referencing my Infiniti FX, but it did have have high and low HID's. They were magnificent and this vehicle should have them!

High beam HIDs are not a good idea. They blind oncoming drivers, like the people with the plug and play HID kits. I know people shouldnt drive with their high beams on but the fact is they do. The halogen hi beams are bright enough

With all due respect, I must disagree. The yellow beams do not penetrate, nor do they splay light down into the ditches to warn of deer, etc.
In a perfect world where everyone drives the speed limit and remembers to dim their brights, Halogen's are simply adequate.
HID's add safety in that one cannot overdrive them.
I order some Sylvania Ultra-White Brights today.

I've been running Sylvania Silverstar halogens in all my cars for years and I'm quite satisfied with them. Very white, very bright light.

I think the reason for QI lights on the High Beam, vice the HID is because when you want to pass a car, and pull the stick back to flash your high beams, the HID need time to "charge up", but the QI are at full brightness. The HID are fine when they have been on for a few seconds or minutes, but to flash your lights, it takes time.

While Bi-Xenon OEM lights are great, and must have a rapid start up time to deal with the above problem, I agree that incandesent bulbs are, for now, probably more appropriate for hi-beam duty.

That said, I love everything about the HIDs and would recommend to you, if you haven't already, to raise the beam angle manually using the set screw near the headlight unit. Yes, the beams "self-level" automatically, but they do so against a reference deck angle that is set using the adjustment screw. Raising the angle slightly will improve the light propagation characteristics greatly (IMHO) and won't affect the auto functionality.

What I would really like to do, that I haven't seen anybody mention yet on this forum, is replace the FOG LIGHTS (H8, I think? PINGGOLF??) with HIDs. KAI even has a kit for it ($495!!!). It's not worth that much, I'm sceptical of ebay-type kits, and I don't know if there's room for the ballast but someday I just may dig in and find out.

Cheers!

Jonah,

I will have to check the location of the headlight set screw. Mine seem to be a little high.

If anyone ever finds out what bulb is in the foglamps, let us know. I have two H7's that I would love to put in those foglamps. They are both "Yellow" which are very hard to find. Also, yellow foglamps would look great with the white headlights.
BTW, I wish I could put the foglamps on without having to put on the headlights. My last car would allow me to put them on with just the parking/running lamps on.

HIDs do take a second to warm up, but more imporantly, the cutting on & off of HIDs is what wears them out unlike Halogen bulbs in which the active use it the culprit for failure. In other words, you don't want to cut HIDs on & off regulary, like when flashing someone, as this will shorten the life of the bulbs. Although, HIDs are supposed to last a phenominally long time.

I replaced the fogs in my BMW540i w/an updated bright white projection kit for $75 bulbs & all, that are the same shade of white as my Xenons & damn near as bright. Good Luck.
