If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Now that I have had my Genesis 3.8 Tech for about one month and one thousand miles, I feel I am qualified to offer a review of the car. I have broken down my comments into three categories: Positive (I like it), Neutral, and Negative (don’t like it). Keep in mind that my frame of reference is my previous car, a 2001 BMW 530i.

POSITIVE:

Overall look and style of the interior and dashboard. There is a great deal of electronics in the car (especially with the Tech Package), but the dash is not overly busy and it is fairly easy to access all the features. The display screen is high up on the dash where it belongs (so you minimize the time your eyes are off the road). Leather on the dash looks great. Saddle color interior is great. The only thing I don’t like is the clock with the set buttons right beneath it. I think it looks cheap. Why not just make the clock part of the display screen like the outside temperature.

Lexicon 17 speaker sound system - fantastic sound. I consider myself an audiophile.

Size of the car - interior and trunk. Part of the reason I bought the car was to accommodate my three year old twins in the back seat and all their stuff in the trunk. With my BMW, space was limited and I had to often put a cargo box on top. The Genesis trunk swallows all of the stuff we need for a long road trip. They can still kick my seat, but it is a much longer reach for their little legs. Also much easier to get them in and out of the car.

Interior is very quiet.

Rear sun shade that automatically retracts when car is placed in reverse. My BMW has the sun shade but it did not automatically retract.

Back up camera. Fantastic. Works well and the green lines on the side are very helpful for navigating through a tight space. High resolution screen helps as well. My wife’s favorite feature.

Real (and well designed) cup holders. BMW cup holders were (and still are) a joke.

Navigation. I had a portable unit in my BMW, but having a large screen, integrated system is far better. Voice commands work very well. Unlike some other cars, you can program the nav while driving. It has given me one or two confusing directions, but overall it works well. I usually keep the map view on the screen even when not using the nav - just to see where I am and what is coming up. Really helpful if you want to take a small detour to avoid traffic.

Glove box - large and easy to open and close.

Bluetooth - has worked flawlessly thus far. Sound quality from single speaker is not great, but it is adequate. Callers state that the sound quality from the car is excellent - very little background noise. I think it helps that the microphone is so close to the driver.

Visibility - I think the overall visibility out of the car is great. I particularly find that night time visibility is far superior than the visibility from my BMW.

Rain sensing wipers always on. With my BMW I had to engage them every time I wanted to use them. Only downside is having to remember to turn them off before going through a car wash.

Voice recognition - in general this works very well. Less than 5% of my commands have been misinterpreted. I like that the possible voice commands come up on the screen.

Heating and cooling system. Set it to 72 degrees and forget it. My BMW had a fresh air vent in addition to the temperature setting. To me, that was the biggest flaw in the design of the car. Impossible to get the two to work in concert consistently. I also like that you can have the driver and passenger temperature settings change together or independently.

Seats - very comfortable. Although I think they could use a little more side bolstering.

Two power outlets.

Both mirrors flip down when the car is put in reverse.

Headlights in conjunction with the fog lights provide excellent illumination. However, I have not noticed the adaptive headlights really turning into a turn.

NEUTRAL:

Exterior style of the car – as had been mentioned many times, the styling is highly derivative. I really like the look from certain angles, but not from other angles. Love the cabernet red paint job.

Wheels. Don’t hate them, but don’t really like them either.

Suspension – I don’t think any other topic has received as much attention on this board. I was very concerned about the ride before I bought the car because of all the negative comments. As a result, I took the car on many test drives over many different types of road surfaces. After 1000 miles, I really don’t have a problem with the suspension. I think it is tuned well for a “comfortable sporty” ride. As I have posted before, it my opinion that the ride quality is very much relative to your previous or other cars. Those whose other car had a softer ride seem to feel the Genesis is too harsh. My BMW had a sports suspension and I find the Genesis to be somewhat softer. I have never hit the suspension stops or felt anything close to the car losing its composure over broken pavement (even fully loaded).

NEGATIVE:

Sensitivity to crowns – Although I have argued with the dealer that the car pulls to the left at highway speed, they maintain the car is just sensitive to the crown in the road. I suspect it may also be attributable to the OEM Dunlop tires (which are considered to be very mediocre). Regardless of what is causing it, I am not satisfied with the way the car tracks on the road and this is my only real dissatisfaction with the car. My BMW tracked straight regardless of the road.

Dealer experience - buying experience was tolerable, but tedious. Service experience has been negative (see my posts elsewhere).

Seat memory – My wife is about 9” shorter than me. It would be nice if the car could read which key is being used to open the door and adjust the seat and mirrors accordingly (my BMW did that). Further, if I press the seat memory button for my setting when I first open the door, it moves the seat to the final driving position and not the easy access position. Thus, the steering wheel is down and the seat is moved forward. The seat should move to the easy access position until I start the ignition. I find that if I just leave the seat in the position my wife had it in, I can get into the seat more easily because the seat is in the easy access position and the steering wheel is up.

Home Link buttons on the rear view mirror are not illuminated. Our driveway is dark and it is difficult to find the button to open the garage door at night.

The storage compartments in the doors are not lined with anything. Thus my cell phone slides around in there when the car is in motion. The storage compartments in my BMW were lined with some kind of felt.

No ability to “shuffle” play a playlist on the iPod. Also a delay in response of iPod to movement of the Controller.

No delay in the sensor for the headlights and dash lights. At dusk, the headlights will turn on and off repeatedly until it is finally dark enough for them to remain on. I think other cars have a minute or two delay before the lights adjust.

Green indicator lights on the dash for tail and fog lights are too bright and distracting.

The power to the power outlets should not be switched with the ignition. I plug a portable DVD player into the outlet in the arm rest for the kids in the backseat. If we stop to get gas and turn off the ignition, the DVD player loses power and the movie starts over from the beginning.

Trunk light is too dim. I may upgrade that light to an LED.

Cannot down load the address book from your phone to the car.

There is no set of tools in the car. Every BMW has a minimal set of tools in a fold down compartment in the trunk. I know Hyundai wanted to minimize costs, but I doubt this would be an expensive add on.

To engage the clutchless manual mode for the transmission, the shift lever moves to the right – away from the driver. I use this feature a great deal and it is a relatively uncomfortable position – especially if my wife has a cup in her side of the cup holder. The BMW shift lever moved towards the driver.

Water drips into the trunk - often discussed in this forum and clearly a design flaw.

No coin holder – I converted the ash tray by removing the silver thing.

No fold down rear seats.

When the car is shifted into reverse the audio system will occasionally switch to the same track on the iPod (regardless of what was previously playing on the iPod or whether XM or FM was playing at the time the car was shifted). Unfortunately I cannot readily duplicate this problem to show the dealer.

Parking sensors are great, but I wish I could get a little closer to an object before they sound a constant tone. When parallel parking in NYC, you really need every inch.

SUMMARY:

I replaced my BMW because I wanted a larger car with updated technology, but I did not want to sacrifice the driving enjoyment I had with the BMW. I have succeeded. The Genesis is fun to drive but it does not have the same driving dynamics of a BMW, but a comparably sized BWM (7-series) would cost about twice what the Genesis cost. Further, the 7-series is not without its flaws. I am amazed at the level of refinement and technology the Genesis offers for less than $40k. On a scale of 1-10, I give the Genesis an 8. If I can get the steering pull problem fixed to my satisfaction, I would give it a 9.5. I may replace the Dunlops and wheels to see if that improves the situation.

I agree! Awesome review! I did have one question, though.

Coming from the sporty 530i, do you find yourself ever wanting more power in the V6? I'm really up in the air about the V6 w/Tech vs V8 w/Tech as the V8 has just a FEW more things I'd want (Seriously, Premium leather, Lighted Door Sills, Partial Wood steering wheel only in the V8?) as well as the power. What do you think - Is it worth it to try and get the V8 or is the V6 just as nice to drive?

Thanks!

Excellent review. Thank you for sharing your views. I agree on almost everything on your list.

In short - no. I find the V6 has more than enough power and, I think, at least as much as my 530i. Further, the power seems smoother in the Genesis. The BMW had a slight lag when I punched the accelerator, the Genesis does not. Part of the reason I bought the Genesis over an SUV and the V6 over the V8 was to try to do the right thing for the environment, i.e. maximize mpg. The rating of 27 mpg on the highway was the highest I could find for such a large vehicle. You don't lose much with the V8 (according to the ratings), but every little bit helps.

I never drove the V8, but really had no desire to. I HATE the partial wood steering wheel. Lighted door sills can be added to the V6. Never felt the leather on the V8, but the V6 seems fine to me.

Great review. You have mentioned almost everything I have felt - I hadn't even thought about the headlight/foglight indicators, but you are right.

I posted the following wishlist in a different thread a while ago - I have made additions/revisions:
---------------------
Regrets if any of this is untrue in US - I am in Canada. I have a V6 with Premium (no Nav System) so Your Mileage May Vary.

1 - fix trunk rain water issue - ASAP. Make a retrofit available.
2 - revise turn signal stalk - I find myself turning off the auto lights unintentionally when signalling.
3 - power pedals, or much greater stroke on steering wheel (I'm 6'2 with long legs - I'm still trying to get the setup just right). Map the memory feature to the keyfob so I don't even have to touch the button (I'm lazy).
4 - more interior storage - lose the cig lighter or make it removable from a useful storage spot, as others have done. Line all storage with cloth or other non-slip surface.
5 - add bluetooth to tech I mean "Premium Pkg"package. I don't want a full navTech pkg (which costs over $5k in Canada), but I miss the bluetooth.
6 - up the power on the heated seats. try a BMW for an example - they go from frozen to toasty in 15 seconds, the Genny takes 2-3 minutes and still isn't nearly as warm, even on three. Control seat heaters with rocker switches so they stay on through stop/start.
7 - Heat the steering wheel! A friend had this on an 04 (I think) Infiniti I35 - GREAT feature!
8 - have a native speaker edit the manual - the Korenglish is awful in places.
9 - Use the KDM winged logo. I'm not ashamed to be driving a Hyundai, but that logo is much more in tune with the lux/sporting nature of the car than the funny little H which works so well for the cheap and cheerful Accent etc.
10 - folding rear seats, but only if the structure can be beefed up in some other way - DO NOT SACRIFICE PERFORMANCE OR HANDLING.
11 - "S" version or package tuned more aggressively.
12 - more rigidity in body panels - hood, roof, fenders etc. feel a little flimsy when polishing after waxing. DO NOT ADD WEIGHT.
13 - more colours and interior trims, and greater flexibility in selection.

14 - improve suspension. I haven't experienced the "porpoising" or bottoming out, but the suspension does seem to get rattled by uneven bumpy roads at speed. Also, the sensitivity to crowns (which seems to have gone away once I installed Yokohama w.Drive winter tires).
15 - factory remote start option
16 - more LED less incandescent lighting

Lastly - BUILD THEM IN NORTH AMERICA. I'm not a "Park your Toyota in Tokyo" unionist (obviously, since I bought a Hyundai), but some issues we are talking about in these forums (fora?) such as dealer training/response, speed to market, availability of different models, versions, upgrades and aftermarket support would be greatly improved, not to mention it would remove one more barrier to purchase for many in USA/Canada.

regards,
cmr

The partial wood steering wheel is awful. Why would anyone want wood on a steering wheel is beyond me! I wish they mirrored the BMW sport steering wheel and of course made it heated! That would be perfect IMHO!

Great review! Thank you very much!!

Great review (Don't quit your day job but think about a career as auto reviewer). One question, tho, if Hyundai did include a set of tools, what would you do with them? The required Computer Analyzer would take quite a bit of trunk space. ;)

Let's see . . .A lot of folks are spending beaucoups bucks on the lighted doorsills and the trunk liners, don't appreciate the noticablly softer leather, and totally missed the larger brake rotors and 4 piston calipers, and forgot the electric power steering (more feel), never mind the power!

Am I being prejudiced here? YUP!:D For the 2 K$$ it's a steal . . .

I came from a 528i. The Genny would run circles around it. As for leather, it's a personal opinion thing, but in my case when I enter the car I do not stroke the seats and go OOOOH premium leather. My jeans clad butt hits the seat first and goes OOOOH comfortable. Lighted door sills are cool when you are near the car with the door open. Me, I get in the car and drive it. Never look at the sill. Wooden wheel is interesting until you heat that sucker in the Florida sun. Nuff said. The leather wrapped wheel is UV protected and does not overheat. Unless you slow from 130 on a regular basis don't think the fancy brakes will be worth much. [but nice to have].

I think you will get a far better selection and better price deals on the V6. Spend a few hundred bucks on aftermarket sills, badges, and lights and you'll be ready to go. On the other hand, if you are going to get the towing package, to trailer your 9000lb boat, get the V8.

The wooden accents might not be good for the Florida sun but the limited slip rear differential that only comes with V8 helps a lot with the snow in the winter.

No couple of hundred bucks will help you with that.

Cheers

Thomas

If you are driving in the snow you need more than the limited slip differential. Personally id invest in snow tires in the winter for any rear wheel drive car.

GREAT REVIEW!!

"Seat memory – My wife is about 9” shorter than me. I find that if I just leave the seat in the position my wife had it in, I can get into the seat more easily because the seat is in the easy access position and the steering wheel is up."

This can be fixed! If you go to your system settings...somewhere deep in the system, you can select EASY ACCESS. This will raise the steering wheel and move the seat back when you turn off the ignition until you crank it again.

I really dont care for the feature but some do.

The V8 with Tech...

I think the 2 things I get the most WOW factor out of are the lighted door sills and the V8 wheels.

When people ride with me, the WOW factor immediately turns to the power of the V8! :)

My mother had a jaw dropper moment the other day. I went and auditioned for South Pacific (a play) and my mother rode along on Saturday morning. She asked if the car had enough power for me....:) so, I punched it. We were cruising around 65 or so and almost instantaneously we were doing 135. She was speechless and I think she almost used the bathroom on herself! Wow, what a moment! :D (Oh, I am officially Lt. Joe Cable from the movie South Pacific...:o)

2G's is a huge steal for the extras...if your in to that kinda stuff!

Again, great review, and thank you for taking the time to do so!

I also have a 2000 528i SPORT Package and AGREE with essentially all parts of your review. I actually purchased the 3.8 with Premium package and a few days later moved up to the 4.6 with Tech package. The 4.6 pulls to the left, the v6 did NOT. The bmw is a 'better' riding care as far as steering wheel feel and solid suspension but it has its flaws and underpowered engine is one of them The 4.6 just likes to GO..and she does it with no hesitation EVER... Having had both Genesis models, I would agree that the 4.8 has much more to offer for not a whole lot more $$. That issue aside, your review is REQUIRED reading for anyone looking at this car. Thanks.

BTW. I replaced the very dim bulbs in the trunk already with 6led units.

I am in a somewhat unique position in that I bought the V8 tech (because in the deals I was able to make at the dealership, it was a $1600 difference between twe two). However, there was a minor issue with the pre-delivery inspection and it will be 2 weeks from the day I purchased (Dec 29) until I recieve the car. In the meantime, I am driving the GM's demo which is a V6 with the Premium Package.

I'll have 2 weeks of driving the V6 followed by the upgrade to the V8. Once I've put the V8 through its paces, I'll post my observation of the differences. The V6 certainly has all the power that's needed on the highway. And I only drove the V8 that I bought for about 45 minutes split 50/50 between the highway and around town. My sense right now is that the V8 is a little more aggressive off the line and that the manual shifting is smoother with the ZF transmission. But again, I didn't log enough time with the V8 to say that definitively. I will take notes as I run the V6 on a road trip this coming weekend and will try to put together a side by side review once I get the V8 for a bit.

I am coming out of Mercedes C230 Kompressor Sport. Before that I drove (each for about 2.5 years) mostly Lexus vehicles (ES300 then GS400 then LS400) and a Mercedes E420. The ES was FWD, but all the rest have been RWD V8s. In addition, my father in law wants to check out the Genesis so I am going to swap with him for a week in the spring (that's March down here in NC) during which time I'll assess the Genesis vs. his Audi A6 with AWD V8.

I think wooden steering wheel is a more moot issue for me. It's only partially wooden at the top of the wheel and the hand grip area is leather just like the V6. Has been no problem here in AZ with heat. The wood is so dark, that it looks like the black leather after only a few feet away anywho...

My $.02 worth! Cheers all!

4.6 blk/blk/saddle dash/wing logo trunk/blackened out H on steering wheel/ceramic tint.
