  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Have been lurking in the forums for a while but have never posted so I figured it's about time. Last year I picked up a 2012 3.8 base model and I liked the car so much I traded it in for a new 2012 4.6. The crazy part is looks identical inside and out except for package differences of course. Anyway, I am posting to let those know the car does drive a little different. I feel it's even quieter than the v6 and is a bit smoother. The steering feels a little heavier though.

The most amazing thing for me though is the lexicon system. I have listened to a few dvd-a disc's now and I can't convey how blown away I am with the sound. It has literally made it unable for me to tolerate the quality of xm. I probably won't be renewing my xm subscription for the first time in years because I realize how bad it sounds. For those of you who haven't treated your ears to a dvd-a, I am telling you that you are missing out. I drive to my destination and do t want to get out of the car.

Congrats on your Genny :) .....The V8 will feel different cause it uses Electro-hydraulic power steering:

Electro-hydraulic power steering systems, sometimes abbreviated EHPS, and also sometimes called "hybrid" systems, use the same hydraulic assist technology as standard systems, but the hydraulic pressure comes from a pump driven by an electric motor instead of a drive belt at the engine.

I also love the sound of DVD-Audio on the Lexicon system but the music selection is very limited as it's a "dead technology". DVD-Audio came out way ahead of what most people had available in their cars for sound systems and didn't sell well because of it, even to date very few cars have this sadly. I'll keep my XM even though the sound quality isn't the greatest just for a bigger variety of music.

:welcome:

There are mechanical differences in the two cars that can account for what you are feeling. The 4.6 still uses port injection, not direct injection, car weighs about 200 pounds more, uses a different final gear ratio, has different tires and rims, uses electric power steering.

..car weighs about 200 pounds more...
This is probably biggest difference that effects steering feel, especially since all 200 extra lbs are on front end.

The main purpose of the electro-hydraulic steering is to drive the power steering via electric motor (instead of driving it off the fan-belt assembly) which prevents losing a few HP. In theory electro-hydraulic may also be more reliable (fewer moving parts), but that has not proved to be the case so far.

Blank DVD-A's = Blank DVD-R's ;)

Just like regular DVD's, you may not end up with a usable DVD-A, depending on the original DVD-A's copyright protection.

I tried only using backup copies of my DVD-A's in the car. Was only able to successfully copy about half of my collection. Porcupine Tree seems to be really easy to dub (though sometimes I still get disc errors, easily corrected by re-inserting said disc), whereas I ended up with at least half a dozen frisbies trying to back up my Beatles Love DVD-A.

Oh well... they all sound amazing in the Lexicon. Congrats on your purchase. GO FOR THREE!

It's nice to hear the opinion who has spent some time driving both, not just done a test-drive. I have never driven the 3.8 and it was never under serious consideration. Now if they were to make a turbo V6, that's a different story :-).

As far as XM sound quality, I agree it's awful, but I also feel that it's the only way I'll have any semblance of choice when listening to music. There are only so many times you can hear the same songs on the radio, and XM gives me a reprieve from that. DVD-A is in a completely different class, but it never really caught on and there are so few DVD-A selections, and some of the ones which do exist are now hundreds of dollars.

interesting... when i first considered the genesis, i was only interested in the V6, mostly because Consumer Reports misleadingly wrote that they didn't see the point of getting the V8.

after i drove the V6, i ruled out getting the Genesis. as i was walking out of the dealership to buy the BMW 535i, i saw a V8 and said, why not, let's give it a try.

glad i did, because there was a big difference to me, and ended up buying it.

For me the lesson learned was that these are great cars in all forms. I really don't think one would go wrong with either of the 3 engines. The more I drive the v8, the moreI realize what an outstanding job Hyundai has with the smoothness of this engine. I am used to having american v8s and the none have ever come close to being this smooth. They sure were fun though!

Nextcar of all the comparisons of the 3.8 and the 4.6/5.0 yours is the most extreme conclusion. The Genesis with 3.8 engine wasn't even worth owning! What do you feel is the big difference: The ride, the acceleration, the braking? Maybe you've already answered. I'll read thru and check your previous post.

Would have to agree with you on that. It's a shame that dvd-a is dead. I do enjoy the xm variety, just wish it sounded better. In the 3.8 I would stream Pandora through the system and it sounded better than xm. Too bad we can't do that with the high end system. Makes no sense really.

yeah, the biggest issue for me was the V6 ride was more bouncy than the car I had, a V6 Honda Accord.
second reason was that the V8 was significantly more refined and quiet.
i didn't care too much about the slight acceleration difference between the V6 and V8.
