  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I have mentioned previously that about a month ago I bought my 2011 Equus Ultimate, new. It was actually technically new, never titled, however had 4000 miles on it.

Anyways, looks like the dealership played a little fast with the full history of the car, it appears it was actually used as a loaner car for a period of time, which I only found out after buying it and driving it across 3 states.

When I bought it, the sales person apologized that he could only find one key fob for the car, and would get another one, and sent it to me (I bought this car out of state). A few days later I told them to skip sending me the 2nd key fob and send me a check, which they did.

Well I 'think' I pulled a bit of a fast one on them. You see, even with my one and only key fob in my pocket, standing outside my car, I cannot push the black button on the handle and lock the car. It beeeeeps at me. Hmmmm, almost like I left my key in the car... at least that was my theory.

Then one day I was in a rush, drove to my child's school for an event, got out and realized I had driven all the way there, and my key was actually back at the office! OK, that told me that the mysterious 2nd key fob is LOST somewhere IN that car.

So you know what happened, they loaned it out, somebody lost the key fob, and its been in there ever since.

I have searched every INCH of that car, ever nook and cranny, felt as deep as I could into the front and back seat cushions... nothin.

HOW DO I FIND THIS KEY FOB! LOL, I need a radar tracking device or something.

Seriously, I think im just gonna send it to the dealer (local) and tell them that for some reason I can't lock it... let them figure out the mystery on their own.

Would the dealer, or the car itself, be able to give a hint as to where the key fob is? I know the car can detect if its in or out, so proximity is something it can do.

Anyways, would love to find it on my own, if anyone has any ideas, or good hiding spots they know to look, I would appreciate it.

Thanks!

Did you move the seats as far back and forward as possible? I don't think is any way to locate it until you see it.

If you still cannot find it, have someone else with a fresh set of eyes look for it.

Yep I moved seats, and looked for it with a flashlight.

Have you checked in the pockets on the back of the front seats? Also the small space between the driveshaft/transmission tunnel and seat frames.

Other places to look:
  • behind the glovebox where the air filter is
  • in the fuse box
  • under the trunk mat
  • tucked up under the bottom of the dash above the pedals
  • under the back seat
  • in between the front seat cushions and backrests

Yesterday I dropped a blue M&M between the door frame and the left side of the driver's seat. Do you think I can find it? No!

The Genesis has a place to plug the key fob into the dash when the battery is dead in the fob. The Equus has a place to plug the fob into inside the glove compartment (at the top of the glove compartment). Perhaps the key fob is there. It is next to the trunk lock inside the glove compartment.

The car won't start by having the keys in the trunk. So you can eliminate the trunk area. I think the key is stuck at the driver seat rail. Observe driver under or side of the driver's seat very very carefully.

I bet its in or around the drivers seat.

Stating the obvious, but you might want to be super careful until you solve this. Your car is very vulnerable to theft, and it probably wouldn't be too hard for a bad guy to read this and figure out where your car might be located. I wouldn't know how they could figure it out specifically but someone else might know. Just be extra careful.

I would check the car with the primary idea that someone hid the fob in spite or as a joke:
Sun glass holder
front/rear consoles
between seats and console ( I lose more $$$ there)
door pockets or backseat pockets
fuse box
under seatback of either front seat
Finally ...assume nothing look EVERYWHERE.
I agree with previous post have a second set eyes look(unbiased) an old accounting trick.

Thank you all so much. I don't think I examined my glovebox, really carefully. I will check for the lost key FOB in the above mentioned places.

A Genesis owner on this forum had a similar issue - a missing key fob. It turned out to be on the OUTSIDE of the car: in the plastic tray around the windshield wipers! That was within radio range of the interior sensors so the vehicle could see it for starting and would not allow the doors to lock.

Home centers, Harbor Freight stores, and many auto parts stores sell small mechanic's inspection mirrors. These are small mirrors on extendable stalks; combined with a flashlight they'll make it a LOT easier to examine the areas under and alongside the seats.

All good ideas. Really it is almost impossible to check under the front seat. I am missing sunglasses that I know are under there somewhere.

I once lost a BMW key, it fell out of my hand. It was stuck on the outside side mirror, hidden in the crack.

Good luck!

Old-ish thread, but since one response was made......I have heard of people taping it to the under-side of the dash so that it is in the car but out of sight.

If you found it, let us know where. I know I'm curious.

I'm curious too. Any updates?

I found mine in the track on the right side of the drivers seat. I pulled the seat blots out and tipped it forward and back. I thought I could see it all but no luck. Later in the day I go back because I know it’s in there, won’t lock, and it starts... second attempt I see the green bottle cap on the track in front of the hinge/ axel like I have seen many times before. I thought, if you’re behind that cap and I was too lazy to get a needle nose I’m gonna be pissed. Sure enough, I couldn’t tell if it was there at first because it was all black and gray under there. At the end I was able to retrieve the fob with my fingers between the center counsel and seat. Use bright lights!

I dropped my key fob in between the seat and the middle console I've moved the seat front to back and I still don't see it any advice

I did the same thing literally 3 days ago. I couldn’t see the key, but was finally able to reach and feel for it from the back underneath the flap and deep near the middle of the seat. Cut my hand all up but found it. Good luck.
