  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Today I use the GPS to get to a friend's place, it works perfect. However, we went out and after a while I realized the map is stuck at my friend's home location, everything else is working fine except that I can't get the map to update the location (when trying to use poi is stuck forever). After I stopped the car and after dinner, the nav works just fine. Anyone experienced this before?

For some reason the system must re-boot at times we have not figured it out yet why.

Don't worry about it UNLESS it happens often or all the time. Although this is the first I've heard of this problem, there are other things that happen, that correct themselves, either when switching engine off, then back on, or when switching engine off, letting the system "rest" for a few minutes (5 or 10), the switching engine back on.

As said before, sometimes, the DIS Computers have to reboot.

Worst I've seen so far with my Genny was when the NAV booted up once showing me about a quarter mile from my actual location and, as I drove, the heading was off about +30 degrees. The system "figured itself out" after about 2-3 minutes of driving, "snapping" to where the car actually was and with the proper heading. I've never seen the problem occur again.

The car was parked in a large parking garage when this happened so, the NAV may not have been able to "see" the GPS satellites when it booted up and perhaps it "forgot" where it was and which direction it was pointing when I shut it down previously. I was also at an airport, which has all kinds of electromagnetic stuff going on.

GPS is very susceptible to RFI (radiofrequency interference). If you are really bored, or a double-E by trade, you might find this article on radiofrequency interference and GPS an interesting read: http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0BPW/is_10_13/ai_n9778491/?tag=content;col1, or just Google GPS radiofrequency intereference and pick from a weath of webpages. Bottom line...it doesn't take much for GPS to get "confused" but it normally "figures itself out" very quickly once it's got clean signals from 3 or more satellites.

If your NAV problem is isolated, there's a good chance it was just a random RFI issue. If it's a repeated and regular problem, there may be issues with your NAV system, or the installation of it, or you may have an RFI source that is regularly "kicking the butt" of your NAV.
