  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

While driving last evening using the NAV system to route me to an address, I noticed that when I switched roads other than the one NAV was taking me, which by the way was parallel to the NAV route, the system kept telling me to take "the next street" and turn left to get back on the previous route, which kept up at every street for at least 4 miles, instead of re-routing to the street I was on.

I am not sure if I phrased this correctly, but just wondering why the system refused to re-route me to the alternate route I was taking ? Is there a setting that has to be made ?

It has refused to re-route me as well. It is something I live with and use the nav as a primitive electronic map to find my way around lol

You could hit Detour and it will re-route you. I have found that, if you deviate from a preset route, the system will attempt endlessly to get you back to the original route, but using the Detour feature stops that.

Check all your settings because mine re-routes fairly quickly.

Should not have to do that with a NAV System. My previous car Infiniti did this automatically, a flaw in the Hyundai NAV system ?

Unfortunately it's just the "flawed" logic of the navi system:( Mine is similar as are most other cars.

It really depends on the car brand how good the navi is, Honda/Acura I've found to be the best at giving good directions. Our Subaru Tribeca with a Kenwood based system is TERRIBLE. It always picks some weird route of back roads, it can even give you 3 alternate routes when entering your destination and none I would consider the best route, lol:rolleyes: So compared to our Subie system, the Genny's nav works pretty good.

I didn't have navi in my last car (Subie Legacy) and used the Navigon app on my iPhone. 99% of the time it picked the route I would normally drive. I also think it depends a lot on where you live. I live in North NJ and commute to Westchester, NY so I live in heavily populated suburbs of NYC with a lot of different ways to get around. So what may be the shortest or most highway could also be the most heavily trafficked route (ie: never take the Cross Bronx to the George Washington Bridge:eek:).

Also the "detour" function is different than the navi re-calculating the route for you automatically. If you make a turn thats different from the suggested route, the navi logic will try to put you back on the original route until it thinks the road your on is better/closer which it may not determine that for several miles. By using the detour function, you're manually telling it you don't want to be on the original so it is more likely to recalculate to the road you switched on to.

Mine will try to get me back to the original route, but usually after I deviate far enough from the Nav route it will catch on and show a new route. If your route closely parallels the Nav route, it may not see a viable alternative.

As well as the 'Detour' you could try changing settings from 'fastest route' to 'shortest route' (or visa-versa).

i don't think it's a flaw.
if the software thinks that your current route is not the fastest or shortest distance, it will still tell you to turn.
i think the genesis nav is among the best nav i've had, including Honda/Acura, Lexus/toyota and Audi.
None of the nav systems are perfect, but they are slowly getting better over time.

will give that a try. The original route and the one I was taking was about a mile apart.

I wil defer to others on this, since I have used my nav only two or three times in 2+ years. On one of those occasions I got the voice to shut up by hitting Detour.

So, I will have to lie with the quirks of another NAV system <G>. At least she understands me and I don't have to curse at her anymore.

Nuff sedd. Like the time I sat for 2 hours from 3am to 5am on the CBE...

Being a transplanted Brooklynite, I didn't have much to do on the Cross Bronx, but the BQE, that was another story <G>..

I had the pleasure of driving from I95 via the BQE to LaGuardia a couple of months ago. And I thought the DC beltway was bad! Ye gods...

Yes, always a pleasure <G>..
I think the only time I went from Brklyn to the Bronx was when I went to my first and only Yankee game, which was an adventure. Ocean Pkway - BQE - Major Deegan - Grand Concourse.,etc a real pleasure. The drive was horrible for another reason, I am a Mets fan.

What do you have the various MPH speed dials in the Options menu set to? Those folks with Nav systems that keep trying to direct you back to the original route (rather than computing a new route based on your current road/position) might be experiencing nothing more than the system trying to optimize the travel time via the MPH selectors. For example, if you have the major roads option set to 50MPH or whatever, yet you know that road is actually stop-n-go right now so you picked a parallel road... the NAV doesn't know about the stop-n-go problem. Adjust that speed dial to something lower and you may find the system is happy to accept your parallel road. Mine seems to reroute pretty quickly and without multiple attempts to "make a U-turn dummy, I didn't tell you to go this way."

Once a route is computed in the system, you can also go into the Option menu and pick Other Routes. Then you'll have a list of a few ways to compute the alternate: minimize freeway, shortest distance, etc.

edit: Other than having to specify street name before the city name (so the displayed list of potential matching streets is often huge), I have been pretty satisfied with my 2009's Tech nav setup. It changed my opinion of electronic nav systems enough that I broke down and bought a current Garmin to use in my other cars. The Garmin drives me nuts; I find it slow and cumbersome to enter stuff. Even though I bought the largest screen available at that time it's really far less usable than the Genesis Tech screen. I never did figure out how to get the traffic working on it too. Voice level is too low, etc. I know many folks like their Garmins and hate the Genesis system; for me it's the other way around.

I set mine to 65 for highways, 50 for main roads and 35 for residential. IMHO, this is a good and bad way for time estimations. Most navi systems have speed limit info and use that to calculate time estimates. Makes me wonder if that info in included in the database? On the other hand, who actually goes the speed limit?:o:cool:

To all who have responded, thank you. What I finally did, and this was recommended by a user here, forgot who, but I lowered the times to destination in the Nav settings, and that seems to work fine. I had them too high, but by lowering the residential ones to 35-40 MPH and left the freeway 70, did the trick.
