NAV sucks or do I...venting

I went to Cincinnati Friday to get LaRosa's pizza (kinda far but way worth the drive, best pizza in the world) and set my NAV to the store's address. this is my first car w/nav but it seems to me the system is more of a frustration than an aid. It works pretty well on the interstate but in town it gets stupid fast. I was advised to turn left into a 30ft. high retaining wall. advised to turn left at the next wrong intersection until finally getting it right the third time. These intersections were along the course of 1mi. Not even close together. I was advised to get off I-64 last month onto the west exit instead of the correct east one. It got lost in Louisville, KY downtown too. This was an expensive option. I could not disengage the NAV on the way home, I even stopped and restarted the car. I'm sure the manual will tell me how to do this but I looked through the munu of options. NAV girl was driving me cray when I decided to go to another destination than the one set on the NAV. Could the NAV be out of calibration?

1. When all else fails, READ THE MANUAL.

2. No matter how good a GPS unit you have, I always tell people that you still need a MAP. I.E., You still need a good idea of where you want to go as the Navi unit will often try to send you by the "fastest" or the "shortest" route, even though you really don't want to go that way. I find this often, no only in the Genesis Navi, but also in the portable I carry in the Continental.

3. I believe there is a warning in there somewhere that states that no matter what the Navi unit says, you should stay safe, and not turn into a dangerous situation, like a brick wall, or a river, as some people have been known to do.

I know what people think of KYians. I assure you that I certainly had a map and would not drive into a wall even if someone from Ohio or California told me to. I had shoes on too. I mentioned that I should read the manual (and I will, It's actually the wife's car) but IMO the unit should be user friendly enough to do something as simple as cancel a NAV w/o so much trouble. My sisters Jeep does. Thanks.

Which year and package do you have?

Assuming you're talking about the 2009/10 Technology Package nav, then you can suspend route guidance by pressing the controller button twice. Or by pressing voice command and saying "suspend route guidance."

As for your problems, your compass may be out of calibration.

Wow, tough crowd.

Not sure about Hyundai, but for GM vehicles, GPS for the Nav and the compass is a separate module.
Nav systems normally acquire real time GPS signals and uses either DR(dead reckoning) or Gyro as a back-up solution.
So, no. I don't think it's the compass that's messing up the route guidance.
It could be that the map database is outdated.
Sorry to hear about the issues you're having.
I agree that the performance of Nav systems available from different manufactures varies quite a bit.

Nav could be much better. In Miami 2 weeks ago, plenty of errors (2010 DIS).

Thanks to most of you for the help. People I've checked with seem to be most satisfied with their nav. Tom Tom, Garmin as well as factory. Mine has never completed a start to finish w/o a mojor error (or several, some quite humorous). I remember reading IN THE MANUAL about calibrating the compass and this was the calibration of which I posted. I'll try to set the compass first but with a name like bozo.....well you know. I've heard there is no nav disc update yet, true? Thanks again. I'm 09' 3.8 tech BTW.

Thats why I stay away from the tech packages. They look "neat" but are more trouble then they are worth. I navigate with a Garmin or my Sprint Palm Pre. I bought lifetime map updates for the Garmin for $80 bucks and Sprint Navigation serves the latest map updates and is included as part of the Simply Everything plan. It would be nice if the Genesis would do BT sound so I could broadcast the directions over the stereo.

Hey, I like my Tech package! It's works great, and has never wronged me

A Garmin belongs on the dash of a Ford Focus, not a Hyundai Genesis. That's embarrassing.

I agree Scott. I also have an '09 4.6 w/tech. Nav works fine. Only had 'problems' with the map being out of date....but I like going 'off-road' with Genny when there's no roads (on the map).

Me too.

The reason I strictly wanted the tech package was because it had the 17-speaker Lexicon system along with the nice multimedia interface.
I admit that I haven't had a chance to listen to the base Lexicon system, but I'm pretty sure the tech sounds better.

I can agree with your entire statement. 17-speaker Lexicon, yes please I'm excited to replace my Jenson amp and install my new amp powering my two 10's.
