  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Does anyone know where the Nav system gets its info for traffic? Haven't found it in books yet and doesn't appear to be from siriusXM. My guess is sub carrier on FM but don't know. I'm curious if I drop XM do I lose traffic?

Its from XM

...and it costs extra.

Yes you can, but you must retain the traffic info which costs $3.95 a month in the US. if you like the weather and stocks updates they cost extra too couple of bucks a month.

Very rarely they do where they bundle all services together, the best deal I ever got was $43 for six months...

When I called XM to discuss re-starting my music service, I asked about the traffic info. I was told that the traffic is a separate subscription from music. And, they advised that the intro/complimentary service for traffic is for 3 years. Seems like a long intro period but my traffic info still works while the music has been turned off.
Is this what everyone else is being told?

I have the same deal ... the traffic package is for 3 years complimentary

It's easy to bargain them down to cheap for music if you want it ... best deals are for 1 year payment in advance I think.

The XM traffic info is too out-of-date to be particularly useful, not worth the money. If you want current info, use something like Waze.

I disagree. I find that the traffic data is pretty current and I use it to detour regularly. I suspect it depends on the area. I am in Atlanta and travel between here and NC regularly.

It seems pretty reliable in the Phoenix area and it's much more inclusive than the system my 2013 Azera had.

In Miami, I find that searching for the cause of an accident usually displays accidents 10 miles and in a different direction from where I am. Another flaw I find is when searching for gas stations near my current location, I drive by at least 4 gas stations that are not even on the list. Wonder where that information is coming from?

Thanks for all the good input. Glad to hear about the 3 years, my old Garmin had bluetooth, etc, with lifetime maps and traffic and was hoping to at least keep traffic.

I had the XM traffic for a period of time when I first purchased my Genesis. Most of my driving is between Raleigh and Charlotte. The XM data was always hopelessly out-of-date. I didn't renew, not worth the money. Maybe the metro Atlanta area is better covered, then good for you.

I find that in DFWland, the nav info is both accurate and well programmed. I find it a far better alternative to Waze and other programs that consume copious amounts of data.

Waze's data usage is quite modest, typically just over 100Meg a month. And since it's data is based on real-time reporting by other Waze users in the area, you can't beat it's accuracy and currency. There are typically about a 1000 users online in my metro area, and the Greensboro/Winston-Salem area is certainly not one of the larger metro areas, compared to Atlanta or DWF. Reporting of traffic speeds is automatic, and users can submit additional reports of traffic, road hazards, etc.

Definitely not the case here in the DC area, it's suicide to travel in the area without something similar ..I find the service extremely helpful until some integrates wzr/google maps into the traffic info
