Navigation update -- how much??

Just bought a 2012 genny with tech and premium package. Notice the date of the maps is may 2010.

This thread seemed to be on 2009's - is it any easier to upgrade maps only on 2012? Seems to me is should be as simple as putting an upgrade dvd in - I know it was that easy for my sons car who had an after market dvd/navigation system (forget the brand). I am already on the fence about using this thing (not please with it's routing and the outdated maps) - but if I have to take it to a dealer and pay to get just the maps updated, I may just go back to my garmin (which is a crying shame to spend $40,000 on a car but need to resort to a $99 gps system.)

(BTW - I am not necessarily opposed to paying $100 for a map only upgrade dvd - garmin/tom tom, etc charge too - but having to take it to a dealer, and have the potential for addl charges seems very wrong to me

Re: Navigation update

I purchased 2011 4.6 in late August 2011 and about 3 wks later noticed that my car was assembled in Oct 2010 with Nav version from Apr-2010. Any idea how to request an update. I feel bad that I got a can almost 1 year old and new. Am I wrong to feel this way or it is a regular thing.

I was told that the 4.6 includes every option. mine does not have LDWS. Does anyone has LDWS on the 2011-4.6.

Thanks

April 2010 is the latest map version. MapnSoft promises a new version every year, we are now 8 months into the year and so far no 2011 version.

LDWS is on the 2012

You're not missing anything with not having LDWS. It's cool to have but sometimes I forget it's even there and don't turn it on. It's off by default. Some people including me would rather have blind side detection system instead. I think it would be more useful tool.

I would take blind spot over lane departure warning too.

Spoke yesterday to the MAP guys. The 4-2010 is currently the latest version, ie: version 3.00

they are planning to release version 4.00 on October 18th.
God knows how long it will take to reach dealers. He also stated that disks are NOT available for purchase, only dealer installation.

Still feel that 2011 cars should have 2011 release.

Neither the 2011 Genesis 3. 8 or 4.6 has LDWS.

I have a brand new 2012 head unit installed on a brand new 2012 r spec. There are options on my DIS that no one else has (to my knowledge).

As far as the maps, I have the April 2010 version 3.00.

Yea, these map updates and firmware updates SHOULD be no-brainers. Pop in the DVD and it should, as in Nike's famous words, "JUST DO IT." Or plug in a USB mem stick with the pertinent code on it. I bought a GARMIN 1300 LMT with FREE LIFETIME map updates (and paid $99 for an older Nuvi 260 for the lifetime privilege) and it's a no-brainer to update them. I think the dealers see it as a money-maker. We buy a $40,000+ car and they still have to charge big bucks to do this? Bah! Humbug!! I thought I read on the Hyundai owners forum that you can get updates from MapSoft or whoever it is that Hyundai uses.

I'd like to see an update that gives me as many features as my Garmin 1300...it gives me ELEVATION. I get the 3D display. I can customize the voices and it even says the STREET names. I can even customize the vehicle shown to match my car or motorcycle or airplane...I can keep trip data, gas prices, etc. It will even keep track of 'how I'm driving" ...my 'eco-mode' because it knows MY speed and the SPEED LIMITS along my route, and it knows how fast I accelerate and how fast I brake and turn.....

You'd think in a $40,000+ car this Nav thing would be better. I get annoyed at trying to voice control it...by the time I get the voice commands recognized and responding, I'm at my destination (30 miles away). With an 8" display it should be able to integrate satellite map data as well and even give me a street view of what I SHOULD be seeing out the front of the car. My cellphone can do THAT.

Another thing that annoys me: Say I'm driving to Tucson, which is 85 miles away. So I look up my destination, say, a ballfield (Hy Corbett Field)...so I just tell it, by POI, to show me sporting complexes. It does not allow me to set the range, since I live pretty far outside a major metropolitan area, and show me places, say, within 100 miles....I did not have the address or phone number of the ballfield, so I was unable to route to it....HOWEVER, I was able to get it to give me directions to the nearest ZOO, which happens to be right next door to the baseball field... So what we usually do is if we don't have an address or phone number, my wife will LOOK it up on the cellphone. By that time we have the cellphone guiding us or use the Garmin....So I still keep my Garmin 1300 handy in the $40,000+ Genesis w/ prem/tech pkgs...

yea, too much to ask....

At first I thought the posts in this thread were some kind of elaborate joke. Multiple hours to update a nav system? Holy cow. In my Acura TL I ordered the DVD updates myself, and it took about 2 minutes: remove DVD beauty cover in trunk, eject old DVD, put in new DVD, allow system to boot. And this was a car sold 6 years ago, so the system was likely designed 7+ years ago. Hyundai has some work to do here.

That's the difference between a system that stores nav data on the DVD vs. one that stores the data on a hard disk. The Genesis system uses a hard drive so the DVD has to be copied to the hard disk first. That copy takes a while... but it (in theory) should make accessing the data faster when you're using the Nav system. Also, if the Nav data is stored on a DVD, possibly limits the quantity of data compared to what could be loaded on a hard drive via multiple DVDs. I think though the current Genesis nav database does in fact fit on one DVD.

For some versions of the Genesis nav system, the updates are more than just new nav data - for example, the 3-disk package for the original 2009 Tech models includes nav data plus new nav & audio system software.

You are correct. I actually compared the Genessis version 3.00 to Infinity CD and Acura CD systems. It is faster specifically when looking for special places like restaurants, etc... The turn-on time is very fast.
It is true that it does not have streets and names spoken by the system, but I really do not need it. I just want to know when and where to turn. The position accuracy is about 5-8 meters. I actually tested it with multiple houses on the block to see when the "Arrived" message appears. Very accurate. i love it.

The new software should be released on Oct 20th. can not wait. To all the guys: My 4.6 2011 is super. I would have spent another 25-30K on a (Break My Wallet five series) and drive same car that hundred kids drive in the neighborhood. Very specious and simple to operate. No bullshit options. All that I need, and the sound system to die for.

I agree that the nav system is responsive and accurate once you enter your destination, but that process is too cumbersome. It'll be interesting to see what the October software rev offers. I'll be pleasantly surprised if it includes significant changes in functionality to the nav and A/V (as opposed to just updated map data).

Exactly. I find that rotating knob thing to be more difficult than a mouse-type interface (which I saw on a Lexus SUV...suh-WEEEEET). They definitely need some firmware updates and a rewrite of the interface. I want 3D map images as well, and with a hard drive, there's no reason why we can't have sat image overlays as well. The entire thing is just too "bland" when compared to my Garmin. I'd like it to actually SAY THE STREET NAMES. I'd like to be able to change voices...I'd like to load in, say, an IMAGE of my vehicle instead of a generic arrow. I don't like the 150 zoom...if I'm heading down a 4 lane road and zoom in, I'd really like to see a 4 lane road (many times it won't zoom that far)....etc etc etc.

I'm a very tech savvy person and have no problems doing the updates...I've updated everything from my Blu-ray players to sound systems to Garmin, TomTom, Magellins, phones. you name it. I do not need to pay hundreds to a dealer for something I can DO in a few minutes. ANd I am very curious to know if this update process CAN be done via USB. I'd bet you can......

I'd like a BETTER interface to the sound system as well, to make it EASIER to add/delete FAV XM channels and FM stations, etc...

and why in the HELL isn't there a MUTE button on the STEERING WHEEL? What idiot DELETED that? Or is one there and I just somehow cannot find or see it? My '06 Sonata had one, and I used it often.

The 2011 map update is available for the touch screen nav. Mapnsoft does not show when it will be available for the non touch screen.
I hope whoever gets the update will post back with changes.

I spoke to Mapnsoft and they stated that the release for a non touchscreen will be at the end of October. The funny part nobody knows what is included. The operator did say it it will include mostly map updates. She did not think that 3D or street voice or other fun items will be included.

She did say that the actual system software is made by another firm. I have the name in my office and will post tomorrow. I called them and they were very reluctant to talk to me, however did say that they had a few releases since Apr-2010. They said that i should go to Arated dealer and talk to them about software update.

Very confusing !!!!!!!

To add to my previous post, the firm that wrote the main software for Genesis is Harman-Decker.
http://www.harman.com/EN-US/Pages/Home.aspx

When i called, i asked to be transferred to a auto group. i spoke to their customer support, who advised me that they can not say anything to me, only to dealers, BUT they did have multiple code updates since Apr-2010.

The problem is that Genesis has no idea what I was talking about. The client support sends me to dealers and dealers have no idea what I'm talking about.

I see that the Mapnsoft web sight shows a 2011 map update for the touch screen but still nothing for the non touch screen. I wonder if they are trying
to work through the three hour to one day download issue it takes the dealer for the non touch screen.
