If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hi - we have decided we like the 3.8 AWD with Sig package. Was close to getting Lexus ES-350 but test drive sold us both on the Genesis.

After scouring this great web site I've read about two major issues - the sunroof rattle and the sun roof seal issues.

FWIW, our 2015 test car we drove had 150 miles and was rock solid and drove like a dream. I didn't see the tell tale signs of crooked/separated seals that some have report seeing on dealer lots but with only 150 miles maybe it's too soon? I did read that one fellow in Canada had dealer add felt or something which fixed the rattles. I have not seen any definitive fix on the seals though, other than glue and new seals etc which don't seem permanent.

IMO, the engineering required to have two large pieces of glass fit tightly on the roof of a car that twists and flexes seems daunting to me, but maybe the Genny's design is sound. After reading the posts though I'm not sure. I know the warranty will cover it but I really don't want any issues and have to spend time at the dlrs to fix.

They are offering us good concessions to buy the car but I'd like some piece of mind as to the real world impact of these issues before I fo forward. Since they don't have the color we want they're looking for one nearby. Is it unreasonable to ask for a recent build (within a few months)? The one we test drove was Nov 2014 which seems a bit old. Am hoping a more recent build may have some fixes for these sunroof issues. I'm sure the 2016's are already in production but for a problem like this I'm sure they'd make a running change to correct it.

Any thoughts? Is this major enough to stay away from an otherwise well engineered and good looking car?

Thanks for your feedback!

It's hard to find a Genesis (made in Korea) for sale in the US that is less than two months from production date. I am not saying it is impossible, but not easy. You should be able to find one newer than Nov 2014, but the issue of finding the exact color and options you want makes that more complicated.

this is why i wish all car makers would make items like the sunroof a stand alone option. you get the sig package and you're stuck with a squeaky, rattling and headroom robbing option that i can do without! :D

I got the Base Trim only because it had no sunroof, otherwise I would have added at least one of the packages. In addition to the potential mechanical problems of a sunroof, I just need the extra headroom that you get without one.

same here. i probably would have gotten the sig package but really didn't want the panoramic roof!

I never thought i'd like the panoramic but when we drove around last night (dlr let us take it home for weekend) it was actually kind of nice, see the starts and all. Headroom doesn't bother us as we are tall enough to matter. I know Lexus has o pan sun roof - wonder how their design is?

Just not sure what to do the car is so nice otherwise..

Have 3.8 sig & tech. Thought I heard the sunroof rattle once in cold weather but not sure it was the sunroof. As far as the seal I think mine is peeling or warped like seemingly all others. Doesn't leak and doesn't bother me to look at it so I don't care about it. Love the car. Love the sunroof. Nothing is perfect. If you want my 2 cents about packages, take time to look at the others as well. I would not live without the smart cruise control now. Lane keep works really well. Wish dealer would have shown me the HUD as probably would have gotten ultimate if I had seen it in action.

I'm torn on the Panoramic Sunroof; on the one hand, it really does open up the cabin and gives the cabin that luxury feel. On the other hand, mine does creak a bit, especially when the vehicle chassis torques.

No creaks or groans from mine, and the headroom doesn't seem like a huge hit to me. It's one of the things that most people comment about first when they get in the car.

It's covered by warranty, so my concern was low.

Thanks for the real world replies. I can live with a few minor squeaks as long as there's no leaks or structural issues which I'm sure there aren't. The warranty gives me peace of mind as well.

As for the HUD and cruise we are ok without them. Couldn't believe how smooth the 8sp tranny shifts and it's apparently developed in house by Hyundai. The AWD is a Haldex unit which is in VW,Audi and Porsche to name a few - it's nice to have superior technology there.

The 3.8L is a great engine, plenty of power and torque for me. A minor concern is it's direct injection that while adding fuel efficiency and power it can also allow carbon buildup since no fuel hits the valve train. But,all major mfgs are doing it now so maybe it won't be too bad.

Dealer agreed to put on rear wing and remove the 'H' which was a requirement for my wife!

BTW, this forum is for the 2015 Genny - the 2014 was the first year for this new model, right?

We are looking for a Black with Silver interior - I'm hoping we can get a recent build date but we may not have a choice.

  • MY 2009-2014 was the First Generation Genesis, although starting in 2012 GDI was added to both the V6 and V8 engines, and that same year the new Hyundai 8-speed transmission was deployed (they used an Aisin or ZF transmission in 2009-2011 for the V6 and V8 respectively).
  • MY 2015 is the first year for the all-new Second Generation Genesis, although the engines and transmission are pretty much the same as 2012-2014 (with some minor tuning adjustments that slightly reduced HP, but increased torque).
  • The above information is correct for the USA and Canadian versions. In some cases, the Korean version "may" have been introduced one model year previous to the above dates.

The 2015 Genesis, the introductory model year for the second generation Genesis, has been available in the US since about April, 2014. It's a lonnnnnng model year :-).

He said "the 2014" so I was assuming he meant 2014 MY was first year of 2nd generation (which of course it is not, unless one is outside of North America).

Right, we're on the same page I think.

We has zero squeaks in our 5.0 Genesis but do have the seal separation which does not leak and am waiting for a TSB before getting it repaired. As for the HUD, I highly recommend you drive one with it. We drove one with out it for a couple days while mine was in the shop and you greatly miss it when it is gone. It is a great safety feature and helps you stay focused on the road.

Actually, the HTRAC AWD system was co-developed w/ Canada's Magna Int'l - one of the largest global auto suppliers.

And I wouldn't worry too much about carbon build-up, there has been no indication of it being a problem on Hyundai's GDI engines.

GM has been doing GDI longer and studies have shown little carbon build-up; the problem has largely been w/ GDI engines of certain German makes, at least for their earlier GDI engines.

I've had ZERO issues with leaks, rattles, squeaks or seal problems and I run it through a car wash once every couple of weeks. It hasn't leaked a single drop. It has truly been a non issue for me.
Now, the fact that I don't use it and never will may have some bearing on the issue.

I just traded my 2013 ES350 in for a 2015 Genisis Tech package. It has that pano sunroof which was part of the reason i bought the car. My wife has an 2012 X5 with a panosunroof which is probably larger.

My ES350 had an all glass roof from the exterior, but the interior was one sunroof in the front and one in the back. Both had manual shades. My parking garage has ramps at an angle which always caused a "creaking" sound in my Lexus (not from the roof). My Genisis has no creaking sound at all. It has less than 200 miles. I'll let you know.

I'm curious about the AWD system. Do a search on Haldex and Hyundai and you'll see it appears they entered in to a deal back in 2008 for AWD systems. I could be wrong of course but that's what made me think it was a Haldex. If not, let's hope Magna makes a good system!

Magna is huge, 130k employees and they supply components to pretty much every vehicle manufacturer in the world. I've been trying to find a list of who uses their AWD specifically but I haven't been able to yet...
